Chapter description[]
- Sunbeam awakens in her damp nest to see Nightheart and the RiverClan refugees sleeping nearby. Frostpaw wants to search for herbs for Mothwing's injuries, but the medicine cat tells her to wait. The infection in Mothwing's shoulder is growing worse, however, and Frostpaw is worried. After the sleeping cats wake up, Nightheart suggests they visit ShadowClan since Puddleshine will have the right herbs and Tigerstar might be able to help with the situation in RiverClan. Mothwing is wary, not wanting to increase tensions between the two Clans, but Frostpaw trusts Tigerstar, unlike her Clanmates who did not believe her about Splashtail. Duskfur protests at Frostpaw's accusation, saying they wanted to avoid a fight. Icewing is certain that Tigerstar will accept them and will want to avenge Harelight's death. Sunbeam does not want to cause a battle, so she suggests going to Squirrelstar instead. ShadowClan's camp is the closest though, and they send Sunbeam ahead to make sure they will not be rejected. Frostpaw privately informs Sunbeam of the urgency of Mothwing's infection, telling her to be quick.
- Sunbeam is nervous to encounter her former Clanmates, but Whorlpelt and Pouncestep agree to accompany her to their camp. Pouncestep converses with Sunbeam, curious to know how she is faring in her new Clan, being friendly. Whorlpelt is reproachful, however, asking why the she-cat returned. Once they arrive in camp, Sunbeam requests to see Tigerstar, but Cloverfoot tells her that Tigerstar and the other leaders are at an emergency Gathering called by Harestar to discuss Whistlepaw's vision. Sunbeam decides to wait for the leader to return.
- Fringewhisker and Spireclaw excitedly greet her and ask her if she knows anything about Berryheart's whereabouts. Sunbeam does not know how to break the news to Spireclaw. More and more ShadowClan cats ask her why she is in ShadowClan, and she eventually decides to tell Cloverfoot the truth: Splashtail murdered Harelight, ordered his warriors to kill Mothwing, Duskfur, and Icewing on sight, and made Berryheart his new deputy. ShadowClan is shocked; Spireclaw is confused why Berryheart would join RiverClan when she was so against Clan-swapping, and Yarrowleaf is in denial about her sister. Sunbeam then reports that she, Nightheart, and Frostpaw discovered Duskfur, Icewing, and Mothwing, the latter being badly injured, and asks for herbs to treat her. Snaketooth finds marigold from Puddleshine's stores, and Cloverfoot agrees to take in the RiverClan cats. Sunbeam is thankful for the kindness shown by her former Clan.
- Later on, Mothwing is still sleeping but her fever has weakened. Frostpaw does not want to leave her mentor's side, but the other cats urge her to eat. The RiverClan cats begin to argue over the state of their Clan, about Splashtail, and about Curlfeather. Frostpaw is touchy over the subject of her mother, and she blames her Clanmates for not believing her. The apprentice storms off, and Icewing goes to talk to her alone. Nightheart tells Sunbeam that change in RiverClan must come from within, and Sunbeam wonders how a divided Clan could ever recover.

Errors[]
- There is a timeline discrepancy between Star and Ivypool's Heart:
- In Ivypool's Heart, Kestrelflight arrives in ThunderClan's camp to call an emergency medicine cat meeting to discuss Whistlepaw's vision the morning after Nightheart, Frostpaw, and Sunbeam are sent to spy on RiverClan.[14] The next day, the leaders hold an emergency Gathering on the island to discuss the vision further.[15]
- However, in Star, Sunbeam arrives in ShadowClan's camp to ask Tigerstar to help the RiverClan refugees the following morning after being sent to spy on RiverClan, but Tigerstar has already left for the emergency Gathering between the leaders, which should not take place until the next day.[6]
