A quarter-moon since Frostpaw had woken up, she and Mothwing travel to the Moonpool for her ceremony. Mothwing frets over her apprentice, though Frostpaw attempts to reassure her mentor that she is fine. The wound left by Splashtail will scar, but Frostpaw believes it as a reminder that her Clan survived. At the Moonpool, Kestrelflight and Whistlepaw are already waiting for them, and the two WindClancats are pleased to hear that Frostpaw and RiverClan are recovering. Kestrelflight begins with Whistlepaw's ceremony, naming her Whistlebreeze to honor her courage and kindness. Frostpaw congratulates Whistlebreeze and thanks her again for saving her life. As Frostpaw steps forward, Mothwing names her Frostdawn, honoring her integrity and determination. Frostdawn feels pleased that she is finally a true medicine cat, unlike the fake one her mother tried to manipulate.
The following night, Frostdawn escorts Icewing to the Moonpool for her leadership ceremony. This time, Frostdawn feels confident that she made the right choice for RiverClan's leader. As they journey, Icewing shares her aspirations for RiverClan: she wants the Clan to be strong but with honor as warriors should. Frostdawn suggests that RiverClan should learn how to meditate again, just as Riverstar did, and Icewing agrees. At the Moonpool, Frostdawn and Icewing crouch beside the edge of the water and touch their noses to it. The spirits of their ancestors surround them, and Riverstar pads forward to warmly greet both she-cats. As Icewing affirms she is ready for the ceremony to begin, Jayclaw is the first to emerge from the crowd of starry warriors. Jayclaw remarks how difficult it was to watch his Clanmates turn on his daughter, and he grants Icewing the gift of intuition. Reedwhisker arrives next, giving Icewing the gift of sensing danger to protect herself and her Clan. Harelight grants her the gift of forgiveness, urging Icewing to not judge their Clanmates too harshly for following Splashtail. Frostdawn recognizes Leopardstar from her vision, and the former RiverClan leader gives Icewing a life for humility. A light brown tom approaches next, though Frostdawn does not recognize him. The StarClan tom mentions how he used to train as a warrior before becoming a medicine cat, and he gives Icewing a life for wisdom. Willowshine gives Icewing a life for the strength to resist evil influences, and Crookedstar bestows Icewing a life for resilience. Finally, Mistystar arrives, granting Icewing her final life of courage. Mistystar welcomes Icewing as Icestar, the new leader of RiverClan.
Back in RiverClan's camp, RiverClan's warriors hurriedly greet Icestar and Frostdawn. Some are unsure if Icestar really received her nine lives, but Frostdawn reaffirms that she did. Icestar announces that she needs to pick a deputy, and she choosesOwlnose. The dark brown tabby is shocked, blaming himself for stepping down from leadership that resulted in Splashtail's cruel reign. Icestar insists that they were all used for Splashtail's nefarious purposes and that they must forgive themselves for what happened. The RiverClan leader praises Owlnose's decision to step down from leadership and hopes that he will gain confidence as her deputy. Owlnose accepts, and RiverClan chants his name. Next, Icestar grants proper warrior names to Graypaw and Mistpaw, naming them Graysky and Mistpool. Finally, Icestar honors Frostdawn's loyalty and dedication to save RiverClan from Splashtail, and their Clanmates chant her name. The anger in Frostdawn's heart that persisted finally fades, and Frostdawn feels fortunate to be surrounded by her Clanmates who love and appreciate her.
Frostpaw and Whistlepaw earn their full names: Frostdawn and Whistlebreeze.[16]
Icestar is granted nine lives from StarClan,[10] and she appoints Owlnose as her deputy.[17]

StarClan, look down on this apprentice. Frostpaw has risked her life again and again for her Clan. She traveled to the river's beginning and found a wisdom so rare in any cat. She's worked relentlessly, learning her skill, caring for her Clan, even when they rejected her. She will be a true medicine cat. With your help, she will serve her Clanmates for many moons. The hardest thing for me these past moons was seeing Frostdawn's Clanmates turn their tails on her. No cat seemed able to see the truth in my kit's heart or the lies in Splashtail's. With this in mind, I give you, along with this life, the gift of intuition, so that in the future you may discern the truth, however murky the waters seem to be.
Reedwhisker:

I will need a deputy I can trust and who has enough determination and good common sense to help me build RiverClan into a Clan we can be proud of. Owlnose. You had a chance to be leader, and you turned it down. I respect that. [...] You, Owlnose, turned down leadership because you knew you weren't ready. That requires humility and self-awareness. You have grown and changed over the past moons. Our Clanmates have told me that you fought bravely in battle and that you spoke up for them. You've been pragmatic and loyal. I have no doubt that you will make a wise and capable deputy and that, as time goes on, you will grow in confidence and skill so that one day, if called upon, you will be able to leader RiverClan.
