- Frostpaw struggles to sleep, ruminating on Icewing's words. She remembers Harelight's death and is determined to not let any more of her Clanmates die at the paws of Splashtail. She gets up from her nest beside Sunbeam, Nightheart, Duskfur, and Icewing when she hears Tigerstar talking to Cloverfoot. She announces herself to the conversing cats, surprising the leader. He and Cloverfoot had been discussing Whistlepaw's vision, but Frostpaw impatiently interrupts, telling Tigerstar that Splashtail killed Harelight, Berryheart is his new deputy, and Splashtail ordered that Mothwing, Duskfur, and Icewing be killed on sight. She also informs him that the refugees are in ShadowClan's camp.
- Icewing asks how the emergency Gathering went, but Frostpaw is disappointed when she discovers that the vision was not about RiverClan. Tigerstar continues to explain; the Clans must send a patrol to pay back a "debt." The patrol consists of Whistlepaw, Dovewing, a ThunderClan cat, and a SkyClan cat. Icewing insists on being the RiverClan representative, pointing out that Splashtail's cats will kill her on sight. Frostpaw accuses her of cowardice, but the warrior explains that with her gone, Frostpaw will have one less cat to worry about and that the apprentice is not responsible for RiverClan's misfortunes. The white she-cat tells Frostpaw to trust herself, then departs to find the questing cats.
- Tigerstar decides to visit each Clan to convince them to fight against Splashtail, planning to go to Leafstar first. Before they can do so, Berryheart and Brackenpelt are escorted into camp by ShadowClan warriors, and both of the RiverClan cats are covered with wounds. Berryheart begs for mercy and tells them that RiverClan has driven out Splashtail. Tigerstar questions why Berryheart fought against Splashtail when she was his deputy, but she tells him that she thought it would help RiverClan and she just wants to be loyal to whatever Clan she is in, as RiverClan is her last chance to be a warrior. Sunbeam runs over when she sees her mother's injuries and asks how this happened. Berryheart reports that many cats were injured in the battle and Podlight is unable to handle it. The camp is destroyed, and Mallownose is bleeding out. Splashtail has escaped RiverClan territory, but they still desperately need help.
- Tigerstar tells Lightleap, Gullswoop, and Stonewing to accompany him and Puddleshine to RiverClan's camp. Frostpaw joins them, and Berryheart insists on coming too as RiverClan's deputy. As they approach the camp, Gorseclaw greets them and reports that Splashtail has fled to the island. Berryheart and Puddleshine want to get to camp right away, but Frostpaw and the other cats think that this might be their only opportunity to capture the disgraced leader while he is injured and weak. Tigerstar orders Puddleshine to go to the camp while the warriors raid the island. Frostpaw demands to join them as well, and the ShadowClan leader acquiesces. Berryheart and Gorseclaw also go along with them.
- As the ShadowClan cats hop on the tree bridge, the RiverClan warriors hang back. Suddenly, a tom bursts from the waters of the lake. Frostpaw is surprised and falls into the water. She attempts to warn the RiverClan cats when she notices Brackenpelt with them. More cats emerge from the water, and instead of helping, Berryheart and Gorseclaw attack her. Frostpaw realizes that this was all a trap. Tigerstar orders Stonewing to get help, but the tom's escape route is blocked. The ShadowClan cats fight furiously but cautiously, as one wrong slip could mean possible death. Frostpaw joins the fight, dragging Minnowtail into the lake with her. Both Whorlpelt and Stonewing fall into the water. Frostpaw saves Stonewing, but Whorlpelt struggles to resurface while cats continue to attack him. Frostpaw drags the drowning cat to the island. The ShadowClan cats are now trapped on the island while Gorseclaw and Brackenpelt guard the tree bridge. Berryheart, Lizardtail, Minnowtail, and Nightsky run in the direction of ShadowClan's territory, and Tigerstar ominously comments that the situation in ShadowClan will become much worse.
