"Yet as he padded to the warriors' den to catch a nap before leaving for the Gathering, Brambleclaw's paws tingled with the thought that he would soon see his half brother again."
Below contains in-depth information for chapter fourteen of Starlight. If you are looking for a shorter summary of the entire book, please check the main article.
Grass touches Brambleclaw's pelt as he stalks through the undergrowth, scenting prey. Before making a catch, he finds himself looking at ThunderClan's old camp from an open, moonlit space. Much to his amazement, there are no Twolegs and obvious destruction, and he realizes that everything terrible that happened was all a dream. Brambleclaw happily heads down into the ravine, expecting to see his old Clanmates, but stops upon seeing a dark brown tabby tom with amber eyes. Shocked, he recognizes his father, Tigerstar, and concludes that this is a nightmare. Tigerstar beckons Brambleclaw forward, stating that he has waited many moons to talk to his son.
Brambleclaw doesn't say a word, noting that he and Tigerstar are so similar that they look like a reflection of one another. He thanks his father for calling him kin, asking if StarClan sent him, but Tigerstar angrily remarks that he hunts in a place that StarClan doesn't know of. He then welcomes another cat, and much to Brambleclaw's shock, Hawkfrost joins them, moonlight casting three similar shadows on the ground. He thinks that he better feel something different, and despite recalling his father's dark past, knows that he has waited for this moment. Hawkfrost wonders if Tigerstar is really his father, and the deceased tom nods, saying that they should guard their new territory with tooth and claw.
Tigerstar is pleased to learn from Hawkfrost that he drove a badger off RiverClan territory, and bids farewell to his sons, vanishing completely. Hawkfrost then tells Brambleclaw that he has to leave for the dawn patrol, and just as his brother pleads for him to stay, he wakes up to find a puzzled Cloudtail staring at him, questioning what he wants. He quickly explains to the white tom that he's fine, finding that his dream has faded. Later, after having a dreamless sleep for a while, Brambleclaw wakes up, excited for the Gathering later that day. He looks around the new camp, noting that various members have called spaces home, albeit the elders, who are still trying places to call a den. He then adds that Goldenflower and Longtail must enjoy searching, as they are advising younger cats as well.
Brambleclaw thinks that although the hollow is becoming a home, he misses the ravine, and becomes more curious about Tigerstar and the place he resides in. He shakes himself out of his thoughts, noticing the near-empty fresh-kill pile, and Dustpelt approaches him. Brambleclaw asks if he'd like to go hunting, and he agrees. Brackenfur joins them, requesting if Whitepaw can come, which Brambleclaw allows while also suggesting for Spiderpaw to come as well. Firestar suddenly approaches the group, saying that he and Mousefur have agreed for Spiderpaw to become a warrior at sunhigh, satisfying Brambleclaw, as the hollow will feel even more like home.
The patrol sets off on their hunt, but not long after climbing up the slope of the hollow, Birchkit squeals that he wants to join them too. Dustpelt sternly reminds the tabby kit that he is not hunting until he is an apprentice, but he protests and attempts to catch a robin perched at the edge of the hollow. Brambleclaw catches Birchkit just as the footing under him gives way, thinking that he would not have survived if he fell off the cliff. Dustpelt furiously scolds his son, and Birchkit whimpers an apology to his father and to Brambleclaw. The latter believes that Dustpelt is only angry because he nearly lost his last kit in his litter as Birchkit heads back to his mother.
Dustpelt then decides to make a new rule that no kits or apprentices are allowed near the cliff, and Whitepaw and Spiderpaw nod in stunned silence. He says that Firestar will be informed about this after the hunt, and tells the group to get going before they miss Spiderpaw's warrior ceremony. Brambleclaw feels a sense of danger, wondering if he really has chosen the correct place for his Clan, remembering that there has been no signs from StarClan yet. He leads the patrol to the piece of territory that Onewhisker gifted ThunderClan, hunting a squirrel. While he is praised, Whitepaw questions if they should really take it because it's on WindClan territory.
Brambleclaw reminds Whitepaw that Onewhisker gave up this territory, knowing that it's not their problem. Later, at the hollow, the Clan cats await the start of Spiderpaw's warrior ceremony. Since there is no Highrock, Firestar now uses a ledge with a sandy cave, dubbed the Highledge. The leader calls a Clan meeting, and Spiderpaw walks over to Mousefur, who is shaky and has pride in her eyes. Brambleclaw attempts to sit with Squirrelflight, but finds her joking around with Ashfur, Sootfur, and Rainwhisker, and instead sits down with Cloudtail. The latter questions what's wrong, and Brambleclaw replies nothing.
Firestar begins the ceremony, getting confirmation from Mousefur that Spiderpaw is ready. He recites the traditional words of a warrior ceremony, and names him Spiderleg, welcoming him as ThunderClan's newest warrior. Spiderleg licks Firestar's shoulder as the Clan chants his name, while his family is excited and proud. Before the rest of the Clan disbands, Firestar says that there is another ceremony to be held, asking Mousefur if this is what she wants. She trembles and says it is, and Brambleclaw notes that she hasn't been as strong as she used to with her age and struggles on the journey. Firestar states that the Clan honors Mousefur's service, and she rasps that she'll still fight if she has to, joining the other elders.
Firestar then beckons Brambleclaw over to him, stating that he heard that he caught a squirrel on the woodland territory given to them by Onewhisker. He points out that the territory was gifted to them, hiding his anger, and Firestar replies that he wants them to go easy on that part to avoid taking advantage of Onewhisker's kindness. Brambleclaw says that he didn't intend that, and wonders if they are expected to defend that territory, to which Firestar responds that time will come later, telling him to get some rest. Brambleclaw is excited, knowing he can see Hawkfrost again in his dreams, and is curious about what can happen. However, he guiltily pauses, knowing that loyalty to a Clan is superior to kinship. As he pads away, Brambleclaw hopes that he will see Hawkfrost soon.
I Firestar, leader of ThunderClan call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in his turn. Spiderpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?
Spiderpaw:
I do.
Firestar:
Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Spiderpaw, from this moment you will be known as Spiderleg. StarClan honors your courage and enthusiasm, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan.
