Chapter description[]
- Once Brambleclaw had finished speaking, Leafpaw starts looking around for Squirrelflight so she could hear about their new territory. Though Leafpaw asks Sorreltail if she'd seen her sister, the tortoiseshell doesn't know where she is. A sharp pang slices through her, and Leafpaw wonders what was causing her sister to feel a jolting mixture of shock and anger; the Clans had safely come home. Leafpaw waves away Sorreltail's concerns about her, and accepts her offer to search with her. A rush of relief greets her when she spots Squirrelflight talking to some other warriors. Though everything seems alright, Leafpaw knows she hadn't missed the strike of dismay and anger.
- Squirrelflight describes their new home, telling the cats that it was a stone hollow with plenty of space for dens, and even a training area. As Leafpaw goes closer, she can feel waves of unhappiness radiating from her sister. Leafpaw notices that her eyes are darting around, unnaturally wide and bright, like she is looking for something. Leafpaw realizes that her sister is looking for Brambleclaw.
- Dustpelt asks Squirrelflight if the hollow is empty, for it would be just like her to expect them to camp in a badger's set. Ferncloud is sitting next to her mate and Birchkit who is playing with Applekit, Marshkit and Toadkit. Squirrelflight indignantly promises that she would eat any foxes and badgers spotted. Brightheart says she thought it sounded great, and asks how she had found it. Squirrelflight admits she had fell into it, and Cloudtail lets out a snort of laughter, asking why it didn't surprise him. When Squirrelflight is about to retort, a voice from the stump interrupts them.
- Leafpaw turns around to see Cinderpelt, who signals for silence. The medicine cat states that they must decide where to hold the next Gathering. Mistyfoot announces that they had not found a place like Fourtrees, and Littlecloud says that StarClan would show them a place. Mothwing describes the island close to the shore enthusiastically, but Mousefur and Runningnose disagree. Leafpaw glances around and notices not a single cat showed any enthusiasm for Mothwing's idea.
- Hawkfrost politely suggests that he could take a patrol of RiverClan cats to explore the island, but Mistyfoot, bristling, steps forward, quietly states that RiverClan would be camping in the area where two streams met. Hawkfrost points out that they could catch a lot more fish on the island, and asks if she had considered that the area might be too open. Mistyfoot replies she knew what her Clan needed, and Leafpaw tenses, expecting the two cats to start fighting. Leopardstar stops them, and grants Hawkfrost to take a patrol to the island. Hawkfrost steps back, and is instantly mobbed by Clanmates whom want to go.
- Leafpaw shivers, for it had been strange to see Hawkfrost openly challenge Mistyfoot's authority. She notes that Hawkfrost must be confident of his place in his Clan if he dared to do that in front of all the Clans. As her mentor calls for silence once again, Leafpaw thinks that she saw the same concern in Cinderpelt's eyes. Cinderpelt asks where they would be holding the next Gathering.
- Firestar decides that they would meet here unless StarClan showed them a different place in the next moon. Mudclaw angrily says that it would be a good idea, for they were close to the Twoleg nest. Blackstar states it couldn't be helped. Mudclaw lashes his tail, and snarls that the great Firestar's word was law, as always. The cats begin to slip away from the tree stump into the shadows.
- Ferncloud calls back Birchkit, and when the kit protests that he doesn't want to leave his friends, Tallpoppy gently explains that because they were in different Clans, they had to separate. Birchkit wails that it isn't fair, and Leafpaw flinches. Ferncloud sympathetically licks her kit, telling him that they would meet again at Gatherings. Ferncloud and Tallpoppy look at each other with regret, and Leafpaw notes they had made a friendship. Tallpoppy briskly tells her kits to say good bye, and when they do, the queen pads away with her kits in her wake.
- Leafpaw feels her heart ache for the lonely kit, and she spots Thornclaw saying his farewells to Ashfoot and Onewhisker. The warrior jumps guiltily, as though he had been disloyal to his Clan by being friends with them. Leafpaw tells him it was okay, touching noses with Thornclaw. Leafpaw is grateful that she still is able to meet with Mothwing, and notes she is one of the lucky ones.
- As she makes her way through the cats, Leafpaw spots Crowfeather standing over Rushtail, a WindClan elder. Crowfeather frustratedly informs the elder he would get mixed up with the ThunderClan cats. Rushtail stubbornly refuses to move, stating he wouldn't until he ate. Leafpaw offers to help, but the WindClan warrior refuses, and she takes a step back. Squirrelflight tells Crowfeather that there is no need to be prickly. Squirrelflight also adds that Crowfeather should watch out when he is talking to her sister. Crowfeather mumbles something that might've been an apology, and decides he could manage Rushtail on his own.
- Before Leafpaw leaves, she spots Crowfeather asking the stubborn elder if he would move if he caught a piece of prey for him. The old tom replies he might, as long as it was good and plump. Squirrelflight calls if Leafpaw is coming, and Leafpaw assures Sorreltail she is fine, and so is Crowfeather. However, watching Crowfeather bound away, she knows it wasn't true, but she is unable to find a herb that would heal his broken heart.
