Chapter description[]
- Brambleclaw wonders if Squirrelflight was sleeping next to Ashfur, and wakes up, being prodded by Barkface. Barkface asks him to get Firestar. Brambleclaw thinks that Tallstar was probably losing a life, and promises to do so. The WindClan medicine cat goes to fetch Onewhisker. Brambleclaw finds Firestar sharing tongues with Sandstorm, and informs the tom that Tallstar wanted to see him. Firestar replies he would come, and Sandstorm tells him to tell Barkface that Cinderpelt was willing to help. Brambleclaw nods, and follows Firestar to where Tallstar was dying. Brambleclaw tells Tallstar that Firestar was there, and when asked by Tallstar, stays.
- Tallstar thanks Firestar for saving WindClan, and states that Brambleclaw had journeyed a long way to find their new territory, and says Graystripe would agree that he would make a good deputy. Firestar stiffens at the mention that Graystripe might be dead. Brambleclaw knows his leader had never stopped grieving for Graystripe, and Firestar had refused to name a new deputy so far for the sake of hope that Graystripe lived. Though Brambleclaw doesn't want to admit it, he knows he wanted to be eventually leader.
- Firestar doesn't pretend Tallstar wasn't going to die, and tells Tallstar he would make a noble addition to StarClan. Tallstar says he needed to say something important and asks for Onewhisker. Brambleclaw frantically searches for Onewhisker, and informs him that Tallstar wanted to see him. Tallstar states that while Mudclaw was a great warrior, he wasn't the right cat to lead WindClan. He continues, and says that he wanted no rivalry between WindClan and ThunderClan. Firestar and Onewhisker know Tallstar's idea of friendship wouldn't happen.
- Tallstar rasps that as he lived, he could choose the cat to lead WindClan. He says Mudclaw is now no longer deputy of WindClan. Tallstar gasps that WindClan must have a new deputy, and names Onewhisker as the right cat to lead WindClan. Brambleclaw notes that while Tallstar had clearly intended to name a new deputy, he hadn't used the right words. He wonders if StarClan would accept Onewhisker. Onewhisker and Firestar are particularly shocked. Tallstar tells Onewhisker to never forget what ThunderClan had done for WindClan.
- Tallstar's breathing becomes quick and shallow. Brambleclaw feels something brushing against his pelt, and briefly thinks he had saw starlight reflected in Firestar's eyes. Barkface joins them with herbs, but finds Tallstar dead. Onewhisker pushes his nose into Tallstar's fur. Barkface murmurs Tallstar walked with StarClan now.
- Firestar reminds Onewhisker that he needed to announce Tallstar's death and how he was the leader now. Firestar is firm that Onewhisker must be the leader, whether Tallstar said the right words or not. Barkface is surprised by this, and looks troubled when Firestar explains what had hapened. Barkface states Onewhisker was the new leader, and that they could do nothing about it. Firestar offers to announce it to the Clans, and Onewhisker, relieved, thanks the ThunderClan leader.
- Firestar and Onewhisker stand next to each other, and Firestar lets out a yowl for the Clans to gather. Squirrelflight asks Brambleclaw what was happening, and he replies that it would be better if he heard it from Firestar. Firestar announces Tallstar's death, and Tornear, Owlpaw and Mosspelt express their sadness. Brambleclaw grieves silently, and Firestar continues that he was there when he had died. Firestar breaks off as Mudclaw makes his way toward the stump and demands why no cat had told him Tallstar was dead.
