Starlingpaw is a black-and-white tom[1] with white chest fur[3] and green eyes.[4]

Starlingpaw is a SkyClan apprentice under Leafstar's leadership in the lake territories. Starlingkit was born to Needleclaw and Kitescratch alongside his sister, Robinkit. He was made into an apprentice, Starlingpaw, with Nectarsong as his mentor. When Starlingpaw snuck after a patrol to fight badgers, Leafstar mistook him for one, which led to Kitescratch defending him and dying from his wounds soon after. Leafstar initially blamed Starlingpaw for his father's death, but she later apologized to him.

The Elders' Quest[]

Starlingkit is a SkyClan kit born to Needleclaw and Kitescratch alongside his sister, Robinkit. He and Robinkit reach the age of six moons, with Leafstar holding their apprentice ceremony. Needleclaw complains that Starlingkit is messy and cleans him up. Starlingkit is given the name Starlingpaw, and is apprenticed to Nectarsong. The mentor and apprentice stand next to each other, proud. After the ceremony, Starlingpaw and Robinpaw are reminded by their father to listen to their mentors and not to get into trouble. During Starlingpaw's first tour of the territory alongside Robinpaw and Gravelnose, a badger is scented. When his mentor reports the badger's scent, Starlingpaw becomes excited, asking what will happen.
During a Gathering, Leafstar announces Starlingpaw and Robinpaw's apprenticeship, not wanting to overshadow their special moment with SkyClan's troubles. The apprentices burst with pride when all five Clans cheer their names. After the Gathering, Shinepaw of ThunderClan reflects on an interesting conversation with Starlingpaw about SkyClan's issues, and points out to Moonpaw that Starlingpaw is very nice.
A few days after the Gathering, Starlingpaw sneaks after a patrol that Leafstar leads to attack the badger. Starlingpaw catches up with the patrol right when a second badger attacks. Leafstar mistakes Starlingpaw for a third badger, and lunges at him. Starlingpaw's father Kitescratch leaps to defend him, and Leafstar realizes her mistake. The three cats are stunned from the ordeal, however the second badger fatally wounds Kitescratch. Starlingpaw watches his father die, and Leafstar angrily blames Starlingpaw's reckless actions for Kitescratch's death, but soon comes to regret those words.
Starlingpaw attends Kitescratch's vigil, and still feels immense guilt about the incident. Leafstar keeps replaying Starlingpaw's arrival in her head, feeling guilty about her harsh words to the apprentice. Starlingpaw attends his grandmother Reedclaw's meeting about a vote to depose Leafstar. One of Reedclaw's main concerns about Leafstar is her mistaking Starlingpaw as a badger.
Later, Starlingpaw is eating a fish, and is repulsed by the taste. Leafstar asks to talk to him, and he looks down at his paws, still feeling guilty and hurt from Leafstar's previous statement. Leafstar apologizes to the apprentice, and although Starlingpaw perks up his ears, he still tells his leader that Kitescratch's death was his fault. He tells Leafstar that he was stupid, but Leafstar reassures him that he will develop better judgement as he grows up. Starlingpaw thanks Leafstar and walks away.
During a second vote to depose Leafstar, and at a Gathering once it succeeds, Reedclaw once again uses Leafstar mistaking Starlingpaw for a badger as a point of concern for the leader's abilities.

Personality and traits[]

Starlingpaw is reckless[5] and eager to fight, even as a brand new apprentice.[6] He disobeyed Leafstar when he snuck to follow a battle patrol.[5] Still, he is very kind to other cats his age, and enjoys chatting to apprentices from other Clans about SkyClan's current events.[7]
After his father's death and Leafstar's harsh words, Starlingpaw feels immense guilt about the situation.[5] He blames himself for Kitescratch's death. However, after Leafstar talks to the apprentice, he lightens up a bit about the situation.[8]

Starlingpaw is a newly made apprentice when his father dies after protecting him from Leafstar's mistaken attack.[5] He blames himself for Kitescratch's death and dislikes talking about the incident.[8]

After Kitescratch dies, Leafstar reprimands Starlingpaw, telling him that his reckless actions led to his father's death.[5] This makes Starlingpaw feel even more guilty about the incident,[5] and strains the relationship between leader and apprentice.[8] Starlingpaw is nervous around Leafstar[8] and feels hurt by her harsh words.[5] When Leafstar apologizes to the apprentice, Starlingpaw initially tries to avoid speaking, but still accepts her apology.[8]
