"We want to be apprentices. But Spotfur says we have to wait until we're six moons old."
— Stemkit to Flamepaw in River, page 79

Stempaw is an orange tabby tom.[1]

Stempaw is a ThunderClan apprentice who was born under Bramblestar's leadership in the lake territories, and lived under Squirrelstar's after he stepped down. Stemkit was born alongside Bristlekit and Graykit to Spotfur and Stemleaf, however, the latter died before they were born. When he was made an apprentice as Stempaw, Molewhisker was chosen as his mentor.

History[]

In A Starless Clan arc[]

River[]

Stemkit and his littermates, Bristlekit and Graykit, excitedly ask to help Flamepaw clear out the elders' den. They wish to be apprentices as soon as possible, and after enough of their begging and noticing their mother Spotfur is asleep, Flamepaw decides they can help him clear old bedding. The kits excitedly agree, and together they help clear the nests. However, Daisy calls for the kits and scolds Flamepaw for letting them help. She especially scolds Graykit for swinging a twig in his jaws at Stemkit. Lilyheart later scolds Flamepaw for his behavior, though Sparkpelt defends him. Later, Finchlight plays with the kits, and they sit with their mother at Flamepaw's warrior ceremony.

Sky[]

When Bayshine offers to clean out the nursery, Squirrelflight reassures him that Daisy and Spotfur have already taken care of that. Whilst Daisy carries tattered bracken, Stemkit and his siblings scurry after her while carrying leaf scraps. When Nightheart carries a mouse to the nursery, he merely greets Stemkit and his siblings.

Thunder[]

Stemkit and his siblings run ahead of their mother, excited to be outside of the camp for the first time. Spotfur calls out to them and directs them towards Ivypool, reminding them to be on their best behaviour and not to run, and they all skid to a halt. Graykit looks at Ivypool anxiously, asking if they will have to fight Sunbeam as part of her trial, but Stemkit nudges his brother and asks how that would prove Sunbeam is going to be a good ThunderClan warrior. All of the kits are introduced by Ivypool, Stemkit being the first, and then she tells Sunbeam she must hunt enough prey with the kits to feed the elders, with the caveat that she must not catch any herself and must direct the kits to catch it instead. While Nightheart says this will be hard since Stemkit and his siblings have never hunted before, Stemkit is distracted by a bird singing. Sunbeam is anxious as she has to teach the kits to hunt as a team; the kits continue to play, with Stemkit pouncing on Graykit and wrestles with him. Sunbeam promises to take care of them to comfort Spotfur, as her kits have never been in the forest before.
Stemkit stands at attention when Sunbeam calls to the kits, deciding that she must get to know them first and make them like her. Stemkit asks if they are going to catch real prey, and Sunbeam teasingly says they cannot feed the elders moss balls. Stemkit defends Graykit when he proudly says he nearly caught a mouse once, and Bristlekit says it ended up scaring him. Stemkit asks how old Sunbeam was when she caught her first mouse, but Sunbeam only remembers her first prey, and lots of questions follow from the kits. Stemkit asks how frogs taste and if they are slimy. He muses that it would take a long time to catch all the types of prey in the forest when his brother says he wants to. Stemkit asks more questions, such as if Sunbeam will still hunt frogs when she joins ThunderClan, taking a long moment to think if they even live in the oak forest before saying he does not know. He says ThunderClan does not eat frogs, but the kits have a learning moment and decide that the food one eats or what Clan one is born in do not determine what Clan they belong to, and Stemkit mews it is the one they are loyal to that matters.
Stemkit charges ahead when it is time to hunt, until he is told to wait and watch. He shakily imitates Sunbeam's hunting crouch, eyes nearly crossed as he watches the grass in front of him carefully. They find a vole burrow and Stemkit is chosen to make the first catch, with Sunbeam quickly making a barrier to hide him until the last moment and telling him how to kill the vole, to which Stemkit nods solemnly. He is very determined to be the first to catch some prey. A vole shoots out and Stemkit pounces excitedly, but it manages to get past him and he swears; Sunbeam warns him his mother is watching and Stemkit rebuts that his mother says it all the time. The kits all get ready to try to catch another vole, Stemkit adjusting his stature to Sunbeam's advice. This time he manages to catch one, killing it with a couple of nips to the neck and holding it up proudly. Four voles are caught in total and at the end of the trial, Stemkit complains that he wants to catch some other prey. Spotfur proudly nuzzles and praises her kits for doing a good job. She starts to herd them towards the nursery, saying they will sleep well tonight, and Stemkit tells her they will stay up and practice their hunting crouches.
When Squirrelstar returns from receiving her nine lives, Stemkit and his siblings cheer for her with Spotfur. Squirrelstar announces Brambleclaw will be treated as an elder, and he looks at the kits and says that while he is an elder, he can take care of his own ticks.
Later, Stemkit, Graykit and Bristlekit are seen playing with a moss ball in the clearing.

Wind[]

Stemkit and his siblings play with Bayshine, who pretends to be a badger, before their mother ushers them into the nursery for a nap. Later, Stemkit, his littermates, and Waffle become apprentices. Stempaw's mentor is Molewhisker, who takes him out on a tour of the territory. When a storm threatens ThunderClan camp, Stempaw helps find bramble tendrils to secure storm breaks. Stempaw jokes around with Graypaw after they are done. After the storm, he helps clear up debris in camp with the other apprentices.

In the Novellas[]

Daisy's Kin[]

"Daisy, you must come see Spotfur. She's had her kits, and they're so beautiful! But she could use you, Daisy. We all give her as much help as we can, but she needs an experienced she-cat to be with her all the time."
―Alderheart to Daisy about Spotfur's kits Daisy's Kin, chapter 9
While staying at the horseplace with Smoky and his kits, Mousewhisker, Sparkpelt, and Sorrelstripe arrive for Daisy's help, explaining that Spotfur has given birth to her kits. Daisy is surprised that Spotfur was even expecting, and Mousewhisker remarks that Spotfur was surprised as well, but needs Daisy's help since Spotfur's mate, Stemleaf, is dead. Daisy promises to think about it, and the Clan cats leave. That night, Daisy reflects about leaving the barn to return to her Clan. Daisy is overwhelmed by the loss of her kits, the fear of potentially losing Mousewhisker, and her worries that she is no longer needed in ThunderClan. Daisy shakes off this feeling, knowing that she can return to ThunderClan to help Spotfur and her kits. She reflects how ThunderClan came together to save Coriander and Little Daisy, and Daisy knows they will do the same for Spotfur's kits. Daisy returns to ThunderClan the following morning, and the Clan excited greets her, with Alderheart ushering her to the nursery to meet Spotfur's kits.
