"It makes sense. SkyClan could become the strongest Clan around the lake without lifting a paw. They could finally divide up the lake territory how they wanted. Don’t forget how much land they demanded when they first moved here."
— Stonewing about Fringewhisker bringing whitecough from SkyClan in Sky (book), chapter 10

Stonewing is a white tom[1] with a kinked tail[9] and dark blue eyes.[10]

Stonewing is a warrior of ShadowClan under Rowanstar's and Tigerstar's leaderships in the lake territories and briefly a SkyClan warrior under Leafstar. Immediately after becoming a warrior, he mentored Juniperclaw and became mates with Grassheart, who gave birth to their kits: Whorlkit, Snakekit, and Flowerkit. When Darktail took over ShadowClan, Stonewing became part of the Kin; however, he rejoined ShadowClan when Darktail was killed. He supported Rowanstar's decision to merge ShadowClan with SkyClan until Tigerstar returned to revive the Clan, and Stonewing trained two more apprentices, Antfur and Lightleap. When the warrior code was challenged to allow cats to switch Clans, Stonewing believed cats might join rival Clans in an attempt to harm them.

History[]

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

The Apprentice's Quest[]

Stonewing is a new ShadowClan warrior. Rowanstar announces his and Wasptail's new names at a Gathering and the new warriors stand up straighter, eyes gleaming, as their Clanmates yowl their names. Rowanstar also notes that there are four new apprentices, and mentions that both of the new warriors have received one, with Stonewing's being Juniperpaw. However, the cats below let out murmurs of surprise. Onestar asks Rowanstar if ShadowClan is really giving apprentices to brand-new warriors. The ginger tom retorts that by the time ShadowClan cats are warriors, they are ready for anything.

Thunder and Shadow[]

Stonewing: "How could you embarrass me like this? Haven't I been a good mentor to you? I've taught you everything you know."
Juniperpaw: "Cats are born knowing how to hunt and fight. Why do I need you telling me what I already know?"
Stonewing (to Rowanstar): "I warned you the apprentices were getting too big for their pelts."
—Stonewing and Juniperpaw arguing before Stonewing talks to Rowanstar Thunder and Shadow, page 144
When Leafpool and Alderpaw travel to ShadowClan, a patrol led by Tawnypelt welcomes them. Stonewing is with them and helps carry some herbs back to camp. He pads beside Tawnypelt, and jumps over a fallen tree trunk. Once in camp, Stonewing drops his herb bundle outside of Littlecloud's den. He goes back into the clearing and is seen standing beside Tawnypelt. When Littlecloud dies, Stonewing sits vigil with his body alongside other cats. Later, Grassheart gives birth to his kits: Whorlkit, Snakekit, and Flowerkit.
Later, ThunderClan cats led by Bramblestar go to ShadowClan to warn them of the rogues' attack on WindClan. Stonewing, Tigerheart, Tawnypelt, and Juniperpaw meet them at the border and ask why they're here. Once they explain, Tawnypelt orders her son to escort them to camp while she and the other patrol members track the rogue scent. When ShadowClan's younger cats speak up against Rowanstar, Stonewing glares at Juniperpaw. The tom asks his apprentice why he'd embarrass him like this, questioning if he's a good mentor. Juniperpaw says he doesn't need a teacher, as all cats are born knowing how to hunt and fight. Stonewing looks at Rowanstar and reminds the leader that he'd said the apprentices were getting too big for their pelts.
Later, Darktail and his rogues bring Violetkit back to ShadowClan's camp. Hisses sound around the clearing, and Stonewing arches his back. Afterward, the tom leads his apprentice out on a hunting patrol. As they leave, however, Darktail and his cats return once more to ask if they may join ShadowClan. Stonewing's pelt spikes and he stares at Rain as the gray rogue enters the camp. They are declined, but Needlepaw declares that if they can't join ShadowClan, then she'll go live with them. Stonewing and Ratscar flatten their ears in response. When Violetpaw returns from living with the rogues, Stonewing and Wasptail look up as she pads into camp. Many cats in ShadowClan later fall ill with yellowcough, and the white tom makes his nest in the elders' den to accommodate for his sick Clanmates.

Darkest Night[]

"There aren't enough cats left in ShadowClan to patrol our borders. If we join SkyClan, at least we can train our apprentices so that they can become better warriors than we have"
―Stonewing about joining SkyClan Darkest Night, page 268
Stonewing, Scorchfur, and Grassheart watch from the edge of the ShadowClan camp when Alderheart and Willowshine arrive to tell Rowanstar that StarClan have sent them to find a six-toed cat. As Stonewing suggests that they search the Twolegplace, Juniperclaw snorts scornfully at him and Scorchfur mocks Rowanstar's interest in the medicine cats' quest. Stonewing and Grassheart exchange a glance as Tawnypelt insists that Rowanstar has the blessing of StarClan, and Stonewing suggests that WindClan should send a search party since they have nothing better to do.
At a Gathering, Rowanstar steps down from leadership and merges ShadowClan with SkyClan. When Scorchfur argues, Stonewing and Grassheart surround their kits, and Stonewing counters that ShadowClan doesn't have enough cats left to patrol their borders. Moreover, if they join SkyClan, their kits can become better warriors than they have been. When they arrive in SkyClan camp, Stonewing helps with expanding the dens. He finds a cedar tree that it will make a natural roof and Grassheart suggests that they can get supplies from their old camp. Later, Stonewing cheers during Violetshine's warrior ceremony. After Tree offers to help the former ShadowClan cats see the spirits of their dead Clanmates, Stonewing is shocked to learn that some of the missing cats may still be alive.

River of Fire[]

Although unnamed, Stonewing witnesses Tigerheart's resurrection as Tigerstar. After Tigerstar urges the former ShadowClan cats to accept him and the new cats he has brought back, Stonewing follows the newly reformed ShadowClan back to their camp.

The Raging Storm[]

Stonewing and Grassheart's kits have become warriors and he is now mentoring Antpaw, a new member of ShadowClan recruited by Tigerstar.

In The Broken Code arc[]

Lost Stars[]

His apprentice, Lightpaw, is now a warrior. Shadowpaw briefly spots Stonewing guarding the entrance of ShadowClan's camp.

The Silent Thaw[]

«He thought of the injured she-cat, and of Scorchfur, whose pelt was still slicked with ointment to soothe his injuries, and of Dovewing's torn ear and the kink in Stonewing's tail. Antfur had been buried three days ago, and the Clan was still in mourning. He had to share his vision about the codebreakers. It was the only way to protect his Clan from StarClan's anger.»
—Shadowsight's thoughts on ShadowClan's injuries The Silent Thaw, pages 159-160
While hunting with Scorchfur, Dovewing and Antfur, a tree branch falls, killing Antfur and trapping Stonewing's tail. Scorchfur and Dovewing dig it out and help carry Antfur back to camp. Shadowsight is confident that he will not lose the tail-tip and applies oak leaf and goldenrod to the injury, but and Stonewing's tail is left with a permanent kink. Shadowsight wonders if the several wounded warriors is StarClan's punishment.

Darkness Within[]

Stonewing agrees with Breezepelt that ThunderClan should deal with Bramblestar's impostor, arguing that ThunderClan is without a leader because the impostor, now thought to be Ashfur, was Squirrelflight's former mate. Squirrelflight corrects him that Ashfur was never her mate. As ShadowClan prepares to carry out the plan to determine the imposter's identity, Stonewing shares a starling with Tawnypelt. That afternoon, he nibbles on a shrew while glancing nervously at the camp entrance as he and his Clanmates wait for the plan to continue, and Shadowsight wonders if the warriors are nervous. Stonewing leaps to his feet when Cloverfoot bursts into the clearing to falsely announce that they are under attack.
Later, at a medicine cat meeting, Puddleshine mentions that Stonewing had a mild case of whitecough. Shadowsight is surprised, as he hadn't known that any ShadowClan cats were sick.
Stonewing and Grassheart stand guard over Shadowsight and the impostor's prison as a group of cats approach ShadowClan's camp with the goal of killing the impostor. One of them, Lionblaze, enters and tells Shadowsight that he has sent the guards away, and when Shadowsight leaves, he sees that the guards have left and the camp is empty.

A Light in the Mist[]

"You're our leader. We can't lose you."
―Stonewing to Tigerstar A Light in the Mist, chapter 8
Stonewing objects to Tigerstar's offer to enter the Dark Forest to defeat Ashfur, arguing that ShadowClan cannot lose their leader. When Lightleap volunteers, she asks Stonewing if she is a good warrior, and he affirms that she was one of the best he had trained.

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

Sky[]

"We wouldn’t have to deal with so much of it if warriors didn’t keep crossing borders."
―Stonewing about whitecough spreading among the Clans Sky, chapter 4
Stonewing sits with Berryheart and Yarrowleaf outside the warriors' den when Sunbeam's patrol returns from their unsuccessful mission to get catmint from RiverClan. The three warriors draw closer as Whorlpelt likewise reports WindClan's lack of catmint. As Berryheart suggests Fringewhisker brought whitecough with her from SkyClan, Stonewing and Yarrowleaf narrow their eyes, and Stonewing argues with Flaxfoot and Hopwhisker, suggesting that there would be less whitecough without cats crossing borders.
Later, he speaks in hushed whispers with Gullswoop after Rowankit passes away from greencough. He, Snowbird, Whorlpelt, Yarrowleaf, Snaketooth, and Grassheart, and Sunbeam attend Berryheart's secret meeting to discuss going against Tigerstar due to his support of Clan changing. Snaketooth suggests Fringewhisker brought whitecough to ShadowClan on purpose and Stonewing questions her, but eventually agrees that it could be part of a plan for SkyClan to conquer more territory.
When Tigerstar arrives in RiverClan with the intention of stabilizing the leaderless Clan, he calls out to Stonewing to bring his warriors forward. When RiverClan instigate a battle, Mallownose grabs Stonewing's tail between his jaws, trapping the tom until Sunbeam frees him, allowing Stonewing to strike the RiverClan warrior's ears.

Shadow[]

Stonewing and Hopwhisker are assigned to keep watch over RiverClan's camp by Tigerstar. When Sunbeam and Lightleap arrive to take their place, Duskfur accuses the ShadowClan she-cats of stealing prey and argues with Sunbeam until Icewing breaks them up. Stonewing points out that he and Hopwhisker have been eating RiverClan prey while they have been in camp, and Icewing suggests a compromise where ShadowClan hunters must offer prey to RiverClan for every catch they make, and Cloverfoot orders Stonewing and Hopwhisker to return to ShadowClan.

Thunder[]

Stonewing and Snaketooth eye Tigerstar warily when Berryheart announces she has ShadowClan's support to oust Tigerstar from leadership.

In the Super Editions[]

Tigerheart's Shadow[]

Tigerheart: "Of course [Rowanstar] was firm. Why wouldn't he be?"
Stonewing: "He's not exactly decisive these days."
Tigerheart: "How dare you?"
—Stonewing and Tigerheart about Rowanstar Tigerheart's Shadow, page 54
Tigerheart recalls Stonewing's displeasure at giving land to SkyClan. Later, Stonewing joins a successful hunting patrol with Tigerheart, who notes that the cats work well together, as Juniperclaw would warn Stonewing when prey was coming toward him. Stonewing and Whorlpaw stop beside Juniperclaw at the camp entrance as they smell ThunderClan. Entering the camp, Stonewing questions Tawnypelt, who reports that a ThunderClan cat has gone missing and that ShadowClan are arguing about Rowanstar's response. Stonewing comments on their leader's indecision as of late and Tigerheart lectures Stonewing about trusting Rowanstar.
Stonewing is visibly excited when he joins Rowanstar's battle patrol to attack SkyClan, raising his hackles in aggression as Rowanstar accuses SkyClan of prey-stealing. The leaders make a deal that SkyClan will give ShadowClan the next rabbit they catch, and Stonewing agrees that this will show SkyClan respects them. That night, Tigerheart dreads hearing Stonewing's snoring, but Stonewing breathes softly beside him as he sleeps.
After Tigerheart returns from his journey and becomes Clan leader, Stonewing is among the cats Tigerheart, now Tigerstar, declares loyalty to, and the ShadowClan cats chant their new leader's name.

Squirrelflight's Hope[]

Stonewing's apprentice, Antpaw, has become a warrior named Antfur, and Stonewing is now mentoring to Lightpaw. He and Strikestone battle the Sisters when the she-cats trespass on ShadowClan territory. Strikestone is wounded by Sunrise and Stonewing slices open Sunrise's flank in retaliation, a wound that requires the Sisters to seek help from ThunderClan. At a Gathering, Leafstar questions what is wrong with the other Clans after Stonewing almost snaps at Mallownose.

In the Novellas[]

Tawnypelt's Clan[]

Stonewing helps Scorchfur expand the warrior's den, though neither listen to Tawnypelt when she tries to help. Tawnypelt asks Stonewing to bring a mass of twigs to her, but Stonewing objects that he is working on the opposite side. As Tawnypelt grows irritated, she prepares to lecture him until Tigerstar intervenes and orders them instead.
