Uncover the star-crossed fate of StormClan in the next thrilling, superlong stand-alone adventure in Erin Hunter's #1 nationally bestselling Warriors series!
Stripestar has always imagined a life beyond the forest, but, as leader of ThunderClan, he knows that his duty to his Clanmates comes first. When tragedy strikes and WindClan's leader, Galestar, approaches with an offer of allyship, he swiftly accepts. But he and Galestar have history, a connection that only deepens as they continue to work together.
Galestar loves being a WindClan cat, but her relationship with Stripestar makes her question the strict [warrior] code that forbids them from being together. Determined to build a family, she and Stripestar decide to combine their Clans into one: StormClan. However, StarClan refuses to approve, and vows to punish them for breaking with Clan tradition.
Stripestar and Galestar decide to leave the forest and seek new land for their Clan. But they are soon faced with the reality of life without StarClan's guidance, sending them down a path of peril, loss, and despair. Can these cats find the way forward without StarClan, or are they doomed to a grim fate that will echo for generations to come?

Detailed plot description[]

In StarClan's hunting grounds, Stripestar meets with his former mate, Galestar. The pair ponder over what might have happened if things had been different. They both admit responsibility in the failure of StormClan, and Stripestar asks Galestar if she would do it all again. She turns the question back on him without answering, and he falls into memory. At a Gathering during Galepaw's apprenticeship, the Clans bicker over SkyClan's exile and failure to return, as well as the possibility that they themselves may have to leave because of Twolegs. Unsettled, Galepaw leaves to get a drink of water and finds another apprentice, Stripepaw. The two discuss the possibility of leaving and bond over jokes, admiring one another and wishing that they could be friends.
Twelve moons into his leadership, Stripestar leads a battle against WindClan, believing that they have been stealing prey, despite the misgivings of Tinyclaw, his deputy, and Fogdrift, his mate. During the battle, Fogdrift fights Galestar and is accidentally killed when she hits her head on a rock. Wracked with guilt, Galestar confides in her deputy and former mate, Pebblenose, before traveling to apologize to Stripestar for his mate's death. Realizing that both of their Clans are starving, the two leaders form an alliance to take Sunningrocks from RiverClan and are victorious, though Turtlesnap is killed. This alliance upsets Birchstar and Snakestar, who fear that Stripestar and Galestar may attempt to take more territory, especially when the pair decide to uphold the alliance.
Galestar and Stripestar begin meeting in secrecy, though Galestar assures Pebblenose that it will end when ThunderClan and WindClan are better off. However, the two leaders continue meeting and end up falling in love, becoming mates while Galestar falls pregnant with Stripestar's kits. To make way for their love and their kits, Stripestar and Galestar decide to join their Clans together into one. Despite their Clanmates' protests, they form StormClan, saying that the kits are a sign of StarClan's approval. However, when Galestar and Stripestar visit the Moonstone to seek StarClan's approval, the four founders—Thunderstar, Windstar, Riverstar, and Shadowstar—are furious. Seeing Stripestar and Galestar's determination to continue with their plan, the founders strip them of their nine lives and declare that StarClan shall no longer guide them. Similarly, RiverClan and ShadowClan are outraged when the formation of StormClan is announced, wary of StormClan's intentions.
StormClan moves into ThunderClan's camp, though they are unsettled by StarClan's disapproval, overcrowding, and prey shortages. Abruptly, they realize that the forest is on fire, and the Clan is thrown into chaos due to Galestar's and Stripestar's conflicting orders. Eventually, they head toward WindClan's camp, though Galestar's flank is struck by a falling branch on the way. She ends up giving birth quickly after, but her three kits do not survive. In WindClan's camp, the cats do not get along, and Galestar returns to ThunderClan's scorched camp and finds a snowdrop. They return to ThunderClan's camp but find it difficult to rebuild, and hunting is poor. After Birchstar and Snakestar refuse to help StormClan and share prey, Galestar and Stripestar decide to leave the forest. Some cats, including Galestar's sister, Crowflight, and Stripestar's brother, Grassfoot, stay behind, with Galestar and Crowflight sharing a mournful goodbye.
Initially, the journey begins optimistically, with Stripestar and Galestar eager to explore and find a new home. However, StormClan soon begins to experience devastating hardship: a weak Kestrelwing is killed while crossing a Thunderpath, Petalstep leaves StormClan to become a kittypet, and in the mountains, an injured Rosebush dies while trying to jump a gap. StormClan is deeply traumatized by its losses, mourning the dead, though Stripestar and Galestar encourage the Clan to continue onward and to have faith as they search for a home. While traveling the mountains, StormClan finds the Tribe of Rushing Water. The Tribe's leader, Stoneteller, delivers a grim warning from the Tribe of Endless Hunting that StormClan has a dark future, and warns them to stay away from an endless lake and to listen to a fish with legs. To Galestar's dismay, Pebblenose and Thrushcall choose to stay with the Tribe together, and she worries about Stoneteller's warnings.
After leaving the mountains, StormClan finds a rocky hollow with a pool, though the medicine cats are disturbed when they interact with the water and Galestar senses something special about it. Stripestar experiences a nightmare, though he refuses to tell Galestar about it. The cats are chased out by the arrival of a dog immediately after. Stripestar reflects on his visions of a gull, a rock with legs, and a mountain, wary of what it means and finding himself afraid to let the Clan stop. After some time, the cats find a Twoleg den with apple trees, but are chased out by Twolegs after taking food from their kits. Afterwards, StormClan finds an abandoned Twoleg den to settle in for leaf-bare, comfortable and well-fed, though Galestar and Stripestar have grown distant. The two confide in one another about not properly grieving for their lost kits, bringing them closer together again. However, Galestar's grief overwhelms her after Huntheart and Fernwhisper announce that they are having the first kits of StormClan, and she finds it difficult to rejoice for them, while Stripestar is pleased. Goldenleaf bolsters StormClan's faith upon showing them a symbol that she had dreamed of: lightning with wind, the symbol of their united Clan.
Twolegs soon arrive to the den and StormClan is forced to flee after a failed attempt to fight back, homeless once again. As Stripestar pushes onward, Galestar's resentment strengthens. She suggests to Stripestar that they return to the mountains, but he adamantly refuses with Tinyclaw's support. The Clan settles in marshes that are prey-poor and difficult to traverse with no clean water, but Stripestar refuses to leave, to Galestar's frustration. When Stripestar chooses solely ThunderClan warriors to join a patrol, she takes it over, taking WindClan cats instead. After Harewhisker and Mudsplash fall severely ill from a bad toad, Galestar and Stripestar suffer a severe argument, with Galestar snapping at him and Tinyclaw for shutting her down. Despite all this, Stripestar still refuses to tell his mate about his dream. Following an attack by a strange creature that severely wounds Mudsplash, Galestar finally orders StormClan to move out.
After Mudsplash dies from his wounds, Galestar decides to lead StormClan to a fox-head mountain, shutting down Stripestar's protests, to his fury. While climbing the mountain, Stripestar and Rainkit find a suitable spot for the Clan to settle, and he and Galestar begin to reconcile. However, with the onset of greenleaf, prey and water grow scarce, and Rainkit's death by an eagle prompts Huntheart and Fernwhisper to leave StormClan with their remaining kits, no longer trusting their leaders. StormClan confronts Stripestar and Galestar, wanting to return to the forest, and the pair reluctantly agree to return home at last, knowing StormClan may end. Soon after reaching the apple forest, Galestar realizes that she is expecting more kits.
Goldenleaf announces that she has dreamed of a neverending lake that was shown to her by Kestrelwing. Despite Stoneteller's warning, Galestar and Stripestar are hopeful and lead StormClan to the lake. However, the lake proves dangerous with a severe lack of easy prey, with the camp often being destroyed by storms. Stripestar and Galestar worry for their kits' safety, and Galestar decides to speak with the Clan about moving again. Stripestar and Tumbletail are captured by a Twoleg while hunting a rat, which bites Stripestar, and they narrowly escape. Galestar is giving birth as they return home, and she has three kits: Pebblekit, Thrushkit, and Fogkit. Stripestar lies to her about his bite, much to her annoyance.
Some time passes and the kits grow older. While hunting, Stripestar senses a storm coming and finds the fish with legs, and he tries to convince Galestar to leave, finally telling her about his dream. Furious with him for keeping a dire warning secret and allowing so much tragedy for it, Galestar refuses to leave until the kits are old enough. However, the storm soon grows threatening enough to force the Clan to leave. As they climb the ravine, Thrushkit is injured by a falling rock, and the Clan settles temporarily under an overhang. After the storm calms, the Clan tries to move on, but the storm returns in full force, nearly knocking Spotnose to her death and separating Galestar and her kits from the rest of the Clan. Stripestar fails to find his mate and kits and is forced to go on without them, leading StormClan to a safe place. He goes out again the next day but is equally unsuccessful, assuming that his family is dead.
Galestar and her kits take refuge between two boulders, but a rockfall traps them in the crevice. The family is rescued by a group of wildcats led by Bound Hunt, and the wildcats take them to their camp, where they are warmly welcomed and cared for. After waking during another storm, Galestar despairs that StormClan's trail will have been washed away. Meanwhile, StormClan returns to the Twoleg den, with Stripestar mourning his lost family. When Goldenleaf has a vision of a river splitting up, running stronger and clearer as it goes on, StormClan decides that it is time to go back to how things were in the forest, stressing all they have sacrificed for Stripestar and Galestar's dream. Stripestar grieves the loss of his Clan, agreeing to lead them home and beg for StarClan's forgiveness.
Galestar and her kits get on well with the wildcats, and Bound Hunt begins to develop feelings for her and bonds with her kits. Galestar still feels that she loves Stripestar and tries to search for StormClan. She and her kits receive their guides: Roll Flick for Thrush Roll, Nuzzle Hiss for Fog Nuzzle, Lunge Snap for Pebble Lunge, and Rise Stretch for Galestar. Galestar feels intensely loved by the wildcats and feels at home. As Galestar bonds with the wildcats, ThunderClan wakes to find that WindClan has left and returned to the forest without them. Stripestar decides that, once they return home, he will step down as leader, and he successfully takes ThunderClan back to the forest territories. Galestar still wonders who she is, as the wildcats are so different from the Clans, though her admiration for Bound Hunt and the wildcats intensifies after Bound Hunt rescues Pebble Lunge from an eagle.
ThunderClan attempts to rebuild with rogues and kittypets. Learning from ShadowClan that a Gathering is occurring, Stripestar takes ThunderClan to see them, finding them arguing with WindClan. Stripestar informs them of StormClan's collapse and Galestar's absence, and the leaders decide to let StarClan decide their fate, as decreed in Shineflower's vision. After her kits are made prowlers, Rise Stretch shows Galestar a vision of her future with part-wildcat kits and a mate. She decides to be Bound Hunt's mate and stay with the wildcats, taking on the name Gale Rise. Meanwhile, Stripestar heads to the Moonstone to beg for StarClan's approval, and StarClan accepts WindClan and ThunderClan back under certain conditions: Stripestar will revert to a warrior, Stripebark, and always work to support his Clan no matter what; StormClan will be forgotten by all the Clans; and Whitestep will lead ThunderClan. Whitestep receives her nine lives, and Stripebark spends the rest of his life fighting for ThunderClan, helping them to secure their territory back and win Sunningrocks. He misses Galestar and regrets what he has done, but knows he cannot go back.
