Chapter description[]
- Stripestar beams at the mountains before him as he leads StormClan towards them, overcome with excitement, and pushing the dark memories of Kestrelwing's death and Petalstep's departure away. He and Galestar decide to let the Clan rest before embarking on the journey up the steep cliffs. Rosebush tends to his injured paw, prompting Stripestar to try and talk to him, but Rosebush insists that he can keep on going. The sun is setting by the time StormClan reaches the foot of the closest mountain. Galestar and Stripestar playfully race one another up the slopes until they reach a gap; with horror, Stripestar realizes that their cats will have to jump over. One by one, all of StormClan successfully make the jump—right up until it is Rosebush's turn. Despite Whitestep and Stripestar's warnings, Rosebush pushes himself anyway, leading to a wrong start to his leap. Rosebush dangles over the chasm, and although Whitestep tries her best to hold onto her mate, he slips and falls to his death.
- A little further up the mountains, after the rest of StormClan had made the jump, the Clan settles down in shock. Stripestar grapples with feelings of guilt, wishing he had been able to stop Rosebush from pushing himself so much. When he begins a speech for the vigil and claims that Rosebush is with StarClan now, Thrushcall interrupts, pointing out how their ancestors have abandoned them after the two leaders had defied them at the Moonstone. Pebblenose backs his mate up and suggests that StormClan and this dream may have to come to an end after all the disasters. Stripestar manages to convince the Clan to stay as is until sundown so that Rosebush can have a proper send-off and so that everyone can get the chance to decide whether they wish to turn back or continue.
- StormClan continues their search for a place to rest at, numb with grief. Suddenly, a burst of voices forces them to stop; they have entered the Tribe of Rushing Water's territory. Gust and Lightning, the two Tribe cats, lead the Clan to their leader. After their joint leadership is questioned by Gust, only Galestar and Stripestar are permitted to enter the Cave of Pointed Stones, forcing the rest of the Clan to anxiously wait for their safe return. The mountain cats lead them through their home and into the cave, where Stoneteller greets them, having expected their arrival. After introducing themselves, Stripestar and Galestar explain how they had left the forest behind and are looking for a new place to call home, to which Stoneteller offers a reminder about how the Clans had been founded by mountain cats in the first place. Then, she gives them both a message—she first recalls how Kestrelwing and Rosebush had died, despite neither Stripestar nor Galestar having mentioned that to the Tribe, and passes on the Tribe of Endless Hunting's prophecy. Stoneteller warns them not to settle at an endless lake and to listen to a fish with legs, but she also assures the worried pair that StormClan will leave behind a legacy.
