Chapter description[]

Galestar wonders when StormClan's search for a permanent home is going to finally end. She recalls how difficult it had been to settle down night after night and how much she had to help Stripestar snap out of his spiritless mood after Twolegs had driven them out of the den. It had been the only good home for them in the past moon. Galestar watches Fernwhisper and her kits struggle with the muddy bog that the cats now traverse and, as per Huntheart's suggestion, agrees to stop the Clan for a rest. Stripestar, disappointed, urges Galestar to discuss their future destination immediately. Frustrated by the amount of arguments they continuously have, Galestar decides to be honest: she brings up the idea of returning to the mountains, but Stripestar disagrees. His objections make Galestar feel like he is only disapproving because it is her idea, and Tinyclaw's sudden support of Stripestar only heightens her emotions. Begrudgingly, Galestar concludes that they will not return to the mountains just yet—however, she makes Stripestar promise that he will reconsider if their Clan fails to find a new home in a quarter moon.
The hunting patrol returns with ample prey and lifts StormClan's spirits. Now with full bellies and a better mood, Galestar is able to lead the Clan further into the bog in search of shelter. Although the location is far from ideal, she has little choice but to allow her Clanmates to finally rest. She overhears Huntheart and Fernwhisper trying to comfort their kits; Galestar joins in, stressing the strong warriors of StormClan and how no predator would attack them. Rainkit, Lightningkit, and Windkit grow more confident, in sharp contrast to how Galestar had frightened Fawnpelt's kits. Galestar allows herself to feel the full weight of her grief afterwards, since the kits always reminded her of her own, unborn litter.
The next morning, Galestar complains to Stripestar about the territory's conditions, but she cannot talk him into moving on just yet. He gathers a hunting patrol that once again only consists of former ThunderClan cats, infuriating Galestar even further. The two leaders argue in front of their Clan, and although Stripestar apologizes for accidentally favoring his Clanmates, Galestar does not feel comforted. She picks Mudsplash and Harewhisker for the new patrol and leads them outside of the swamp's bounds. Despite her hopes of bringing back proper prey, the rain and stink of marsh water make it impossible to track down anything. To her horror, both Harewhisker and Mudsplash abruptly collapse, sick and struggling to breathe. The two ill cats are successfully brought back to camp, where all of StormClan gather to hear news about their state. Goldenleaf and Stoneflower soon explain that both warriors will need proper rest and sleep in order to recover. They theorize that a bloated toad must have been behind the sudden sickness and suggest that this territory is not fit for StormClan. Galestar talks with Stripestar privately when he still seems reluctant to leave, prompting another tense quarrel. With Tinyclaw backing Stripestar up, Galestar snaps at them both for undermining her and, feeling tired of all the arguments, wonders if creating StormClan had been a mistake after all.
