Chapter description[]
- Galestar declares to her Clanmates that they are to move on from their makeshift camp after the weasel-beast attack. After trekking forward for some time, StormClan reaches a hillock where, Stripestar suggests they make camp, much to Galestar's dismay at still being trapped in the marshes. She reluctantly agrees, and goes to check on Harewhisker and Mudsplash, who have both since collapsed due to illness and injury.
- Galestar approaches Mudsplash first, watching as he struggles to breathe thanks to the wound across his neck. She recalls a time moons prior, where she and Mudsplash had still been apprentices and snuck off to play, wishing she had taken the time to get to know him better. She asks Goldenleaf if there are any herbs he could be given, but the medicine cat explains that their supplies had been crushed and not yet restocked. Stoneflower grumbles that this area is no good, and Galestar snaps at him before immediately apologizing, feeling useless.
- Her grief deepens as she thinks of Kestrelwing, wondering if he may have known anything about the herbs in the area. Her thoughts spiral into what-ifs: wondering what would have happened had he not died on the Thunderpath, if Rosebush hadn't fallen, if they hadn't left the forest, and if StormClan had never been created. Refusing to dwell, she asks Tinyclaw to send out a patrol to find herbs, though she grows irritated when Tinyclaw looks for Stripestar to agree with the idea. Galestar orders Tinyclaw to go, wishing Pebblenose had stayed with StormClan instead of The Tribe of Rushing Water. Goldenleaf and Stoneflower are skeptical that more herbs will help, citing the need for clean water, further stressing Galestar and leaving her wishing she had pushed Stripestar to leave earlier.
- A half-moon later, Mudsplash succumbs to his injuries. Despite her grief, Galestar honors him at his vigil, recalling his courage and loyalty, and other cats follow suit by sharing their own memories. Galestar's frustration grows once more as Mudsplash is buried in the swampy ground, and decides to take control of the group. She announces that they will travel toward a distant mountain, its peak shaped like a fox's head, though Stripestar pleads with her to return to the Tribe's territory. She asks him to give a single reason as to why they should return to the Tribe, but Stripestar stays silent and begrudgingly agrees to her plan.
