Chapter description

In the wake of Fernwhisper, Huntheart, Lightningkit, and Windkit leaving StormClan to return to the forest, Galestar reflects on the grieving queen's parting words on how she and Stripestar led their Clan to disaster. Despite knowing that their desire to be mates has led to their failure, she finds comfort in Stripestar laying beside her, despite how defeated he looked as Fernwhisper's remaining family left.

Tinyclaw later announces that the Clan wants to meet with Galestar and Stripestar, and Galestar grows more guilty as she sees how underfed StornClan is. Whitestep speaks first, citing that while she has remained loyal to StormClan even after her mate's untimely death, the Clan now needs its leaders to show them the same loyalty. Stoneflower declares that StormClan is over before Tumbletail interrupts and tells Galestar and Stripestar that they want to return to the forest and are all in agreement.

Galestar attempts to convince her Clan differently, citing the lack of prey after the fire, but the Clan continues to voice their agreement of returning home. Galestar finally agrees that StormClan will return to the forest as one Clan, secretly wondering if StormClan would come to an end. She sees Stripestar huddled nearby, mourning their shared dream, and Galestar wonders what will happen to their relationship, knowing neither would join the other's original Clan.

Palepaw excitedly announces that she can see an apple forest, rushing ahead along with several of her Clanmates, much to Galestar's silent irritation. Stripestar asks her if she is feeling alright, as she has hung back for most of the journey home, and she explains that she is just tired from days of walking. Stripestar tries to coax her into eating, making her realize that the last time she had felt this tired, she had been close to having kits.

Once the Clan settles for the night, Galestar invites Stripestar on a walk, where she announces that she is having another litter. Both her and Stripestar are thrilled at the announcement, though after a few moments Stripestar frets over Galestar's waning strength and what they may find in the forest. She resolves that these kits will forever be StormClan kits, no matter what happens.

Goldenleaf yowls for everyone to wake up, announcing that she has had a vision sent by Kestrelwing, where he showed her a stretch of sand and water that stretched to the horizon. Galestar suddenly recalls Stoneteller's words regarding the lake without end, but Goldenleaf continues to explain that she saw all of StormClan having made a home. After Goldenleaf says she saw kits playing in the sand, Galestar realizes it may be the place where she should have her litter. As the Clan begins to discuss the dream among themselves, wondering who the kits could be, Galestar announces that they are hers, much to the Clan's delight.

Stripestar declares his intention to travel towards the endless lake, while promising that if anyone still wanted to return to the forest, he would bring them there. The Clan ultimately decides to follow Goldenleaf's dream, reigniting Galestar's hope for StormClan's future.
