Chapter description

Seasons later, Stripestar leads a ThunderClan patrol into the hollow of Fourtrees, joined by his warriors and deputy, Tinyclaw. Despite Tinyclaw's concerns about their depleted ranks, Stripestar insists on striking WindClan before their strength fades further. He argues that repeated border transgressions must be answered, and resolves to act while ThunderClan still has the advantage. Fogdift cautiously echoes Tinyclaw's worries. While she supports her mate, she urges Stripestar not to let pride drive his decisions. Reassured by her loyalty and concern, Stripestar presses forward, leading the patrol onto WindClan territory. As they near the camp, they spot a WindClan patrol and break into pursuit, hoping to prevent them from sounding the alarm.

ThunderClan chases the fleeing cats across the moor, only to halt at the edge of the Thunderpath, where they are met by a prepared WindClan force led by Galestar. As the two leaders confront one another, Stripestar is struck by Galestar's solitary stance — Pebblenose, her deputy and former mate, hangs back from the front line. Tinyclaw confirms rumors that the two have separated, though Pebblenose remains her deputy.

When Stripestar accuses WindClan of stealing prey, Galestar fiercely denies it, calling him a liar. Enraged, Fogdrift lunges at her, sparking a battle between the Clans. Stripestar joins the fray and tries to protect his mate, but is delayed by a WindClan warrior. By the time he breaks free, Fogdrift has been knocked aside in her fight with Galestar and lies motionless in the grass. Galestar freezes upon realizing Fogdrift is gravely injured, and attempts to stop the she-cat's bleeding before realizing Fogdrift has collided with a hidden rock and succumbed to her injuries. Grief-stricken, Stripestar prepares to attack Galestar, but is intercepted by Pebblenose, who calls a retreat for WindClan. ThunderClan rallies around their leader, but Stripestar refuses to give chase. As WindClan flees, Stripestar watches Galestar linger, seemingly wanting to speak before Pebblenose pulls her away. Stripestar watches her disappear, convinced that she may have tried to apologize.
