Chapter description

A half moon has passed since StormClan arrived at the sun-drown-place, and Stripestar is still unsettled by how the water covers the beach at times before disappearing. He recalls Goldenleaf's dream about the place and how wonderful she made it seem, but prey is scarce and the gulls are difficult to hunt. He manages to catch a small shrew to deliver back to StormClan's camp.

Upon his approach, he looks on with pride as he sees his Clanmates are close to done with den construction, after a storm had destroyed their old ones. He offers Galestar the fresh kill, and the two mates talk about what they will do after their kits are born. Galestar admits to not liking their new home, but explains they cannot travel until the kits are grown. They decide that Galestar will deliver the news that they will be finding a new home once more, and Stripestar decides to hunt more.

Stripestar decides to find food in the carrionplace alongside Tumbletail. A rat startles them as they sift through Twoleg trash, and decide to hunt it after seeing its massive size. While he is initially successful in catching the rat, Stripestar and Tumbletail are grabbed by a Twoleg, and Stripestar gets bitten by the creature before it scurries away. They are carried away from the carrionplace and brought to a small clearing with several traps. As the Twoleg tries to put them in the trap, they both manage to break free and run away, successfully escaping.

Stripestar and Tumbletail manage to catch a few small pieces of prey, and Tumbletail compares the sun-drown-place's lack of food to the mountains. Stripestar declares the carrionplace off-limits after their ordeal, and decides to not tell the Clan about his and Tumbletail's near capture. Upon arriving to the camp, Stripestar sees the Clan huddling together, and Tinyclaw announces the news: Galestar has started kitting.
