Chapter description[]
- As Galestar's kitting progresses, she lays panting in her den being soothed by Goldenleaf while the medicine cats help her. Stoneflower offers a stick to bite on, and Galestar is reminded of her last kitting, wondering if this one was any different. She asks after her mate, Stripestar, though neither cat with her answers. Galestar worries about her unborn kits and if they will survive the harsh environment of the sun-drown-place with so little food, yet feels excited at the prospect of meeting them for the first time.
- Stripestar is there as the first kit, Pebblekit is born, named after her former mate. The other two arrive in quick succession, named Thrushkit and Fogkit, after Fogdrift. When Stripestar asks about telling the Clan, Galestar remarks that they were not happy with the idea of moving once more. She asks if Stripestar had luck hunting, noticing a long scratch along his flank, which he tells her was only from trash. She catches him in the lie but decides to not question him, as their Clanmates are beginning to peer into the den to greet the new kits.
- Later on, Stripestar delivers Thrushkit back to the nursery after he had snuck out to play in the medicine den. Galestar watches as Fogkit pounces on her father's tail, creating a game out of the ordeal. She feels a rush of love watching her mate interact with their kits, and after they finish, the two cats decide to take them out of the camp for the first time. As they race off to explore, she and Stripestar reflect on how much they have grown, when Galestar notices the healed injury Stripestar had gotten from Twoleg trash. She wonders why he is so secretive, and why he has kept things from her.
