| "If we are to thrive again, there is only one thing to be done. We must return to the way things were. The way they have always been. We must be WindClan and ThunderClan once again. If we follow this path, both Clans will prosper. We will both be stronger and healthier than we have ever been together. This is the path. This is the only path." |

Chapter description[]
- Stripestar has not spoken much to his Clanmates since leaving the sun-drown-place. Hazelfrond and Nettlesting have scouted ahead to see if Twolegs are still inhabiting the den they stayed at previously. They report that the monster is not there. He decides that StormClan will stay at the Twoleg den. Looking at it, he reminisces on the time they spent there, and wishes they had never left at all.
- He tells Tinyclaw to split the Clan into hunting patrols, and she asks if he is coming. Stripestar notices how on edge she is, and tries not to lose his temper as he replies that he will go on alone. He then slips into the house alone, and begins to ache about the loss of Galestar again, remembering everything she used to do in the den. Though it hurts him to remember, he still wishes to. Then the memories of losing his mate and his kits hit him. He remembers returning to the site the next day and having no luck finding them. When Tinyclaw offers to relieve him of leadership temporarily, he understands that his Clanmates believe Galestar and his kits are lost, and do not want to wait for them anymore. At dawn, he led them to the Twoleg den. However, he has not given up on his family, and he knows that one day he will see them again.
- Tinyclaw finds him and tells him their Clanmates have been talking, and he should hear what they have to say. As he sees his Clanmates, he realizes how desperate and bedraggled they have all become. Goldenleaf speaks, saying she has had her first clear dream in moons. She saw a dried-up river in the forest, and what little water was in it was dirty. As she continued along its banks, she saw it split in two, fill with more water, and become clearer. When he asks her what she makes of the dream, she tells him that the river represents StormClan, and if they want to thrive, they must separate back into ThunderClan and WindClan. Angry, he asks StormClan if they would throw away all they have sacrificed. Whitestep retorts that every cat has sacrificed too much for his dream. Their Clanmates chime in that they gave up their homes, Clans, loved ones, and StarClan, and it has gotten them nothing. Whitestep asks if it was worth it, a question Stripestar has been wrestling with since he lost his family.
- Goldenleaf says they will not return to StormClan's old camp in the forest; rather the WindClan cats will make their camp on the moor as they always have. Peaktail growls that StormClan died with Galestar, and Flash adds that without her, WindClan cats are just following the leader of another Clan. Stripestar wonders if he had ever truly been a leader of StormClan, or if it had ever even existed. He knows that he cannot change their minds, but he promises not to lose his pride. The tabby tom tells the Clan that he will guide them to the forest, and allow the splitting of the Clans. He only asks that they not split up until they reach the forest. Eventually, Goldenleaf and the rest of WindClan agree. He wonders who will be the new leader of WindClan, before thinking that no cat can replace Galestar.
- After night falls, Tinyclaw finds Stripestar again, and tells him he did the right thing. She says it was not easy, and apologizes. He finds that the tension in her has eased, and he remembers how his closeness with Tinyclaw jeopardized his relationship with Galestar. The tabby tom wonders how he ever allowed anything to come between them, but acknowledges that he and Tinyclaw were both ThunderClan. He then wonders if he and Galestar, as well as StormClan, had ever meant anything. The words of StarClan come back to him, and he realizes what they said was coming true. Tinyclaw assures him that it was just a mistake, and it is up to them to correct it.
