Galestar stands by the endless lake, having spent the entire day walking along the shore searching for StormClan. Bound Hunt offers to bring her fresh-kill if she wants to stay longer, as he has been following her all day, but she politely declines his offer. He then suggests they return to the camp and search again tomorrow. She again declines this, asking him to tell her the truth and if he has ever caught scent of StormClan during their search. Bound Hunt admits that he has not, and she says that it is time to give up the search, that StormClan may be gone for good.
Bound Hunt sits by her to comfort her, and she rests her head against his. She takes in the sight of the endless lake, one that she now loves. As she does, she confesses that she does not know who she is anymore without the Clans. She asks who is she then, and Bound Hunt replies that she is a fine hunter and mother to three troublesome kits. He adds that she is also determined and that she will find her path. He admits that he is grateful for every day she and her kits stay with the wildcats, because he is fond of her. Though she appreciates his honesty, his words trouble her. She remembers how Stripestar kept secrets from her, and though she wants to believe in the best of him, he has made it hard for her.
She tells Bound Hunt that he has been kind to her and her kits, and she has felt at ease with him. However, she cannot promise that she will stay forever, because she still wants a future with the father of her kits. He understands fully, and tells her that he will always be there for her, and the wildcats will always welcome her.
At the full moon, the wildcats gather by the dead rowan tree. Galestar is in awe of it, thinking that it is like nothing she has ever seen, and that it seems so alive. Dream Flow announces that they will speak with their ancestors about Galestar and their kits. She calls on their ancestors to guide Pebblekit, Thrushkit, and Fogkit. An ancestor, speaking through another wildcatelder, introduces himself as Roll Flick, and says he will be Thrushkit's guide. Galestar is amazed to find that the ancestor is speaking through the elder, but knows it is true. Roll Flick turns his attention to Thrushkit and assures him that he will always be at his side. He announces his new name, Thrush Roll. The black-and-white she-cat feels a sense of calm that someone else will watch over her kit as well.
Dream Flow then asks their ancestors who will watch over the other kits. Nuzzle Hiss becomes the guide of Fogkit, and Lunge Snap becomes Pebblekit's. They become Fog Nuzzle and Pebble Lunge. Before Dream Flow can conclude the ceremony, an ancestor begins speaking through her. He introduces himself as Rise Stretch to Galestar, and tells her she will always be safe with the wildcats. He then offers to be her guide, and gives her a new name: Gale Rise. Her kits express their approval, and Galestar finds herself awash with emotions. She realizes that she has never felt so cared for and loved, and she glances at Bound Hunt. Galestar knows now that she has a home with the wildcats.
I, Roll Flick, will be Thrushkit's guide. Do not be afraid, Thrushkit of the Clans. There is great courage within you. I see it. I shall guide your paw steps, Thrushkit. I shall walk always at your side, and one day you will grow to be a great tom—gentle, wise and strong. From now on, our two names are one. You are a kit no longer, Thrushkit. You are Thrush Roll.
