"You should tell us, Galestar, if something bothers you. That is the wildcat way. We can change. All of us. We do not believe our way to be the only one—or the best."

Chapter description[]

Bound Hunt is teaching Fog Nuzzle battle moves, but she does not get it. While her siblings are stifling laughter, the other trainees are simply waiting patiently. Fog Nuzzle expresses her frustration, and Bound Hunt says he could not get it on his first try either. He nearly took off his teacher's ear and scared her. After that, he tells the trainee to try again from a lower position. She then executes the move flawlessly.
Though she is proud, her doubts come in. Even though they have been staying with the wildcats for several moons, she does not who she is. She lost her mate and Clan, and is still in love with Stripestar, but she does not know her future. Pondering these thoughts, she notices how Bound Hunt treats her kits as though they were his.
Galestar hunts with Bound Hunt and catches the scent of vole. Bound Hunt tells her they are his favorite, and she replies that they are hers as well. Before they can pursue the vole, the wildcat asks her a question. He asks if she means to return to the forest, and she hesitates. The she-cat tells him that she has been with the Clans for so long, and cannot imagine anything else. He understands, but worries that she does not feel at home. She says she does, but it is complicated. Things are different, and she uses sharing tongues as an example. Galestar asks Bound Hunt why only she-cats groom others, and he says he has never thought about it. He then licks a tuft of fur on himself, and asks her how he did. Bound Hunt implores her to tell the wildcats if something bothers her, and that the wildcat way is one of change.
After the hunt, they make their way back to camp. Pebble Lunge, having scented them, races across the grass to greet them. Instead of greeting him, Bound Hunt instead stiffens and tells Pebble Lunge to get back to the trees. Galestar does not understand what is happening at first, but then notices the eagle flying above them. Before Pebble Lunge can get to safety, the eagle swoops. Fortunately, Bound Hunt slams into the eagle before it can reach the trainee, and they go rolling. Galestar puts herself in between her kit and the fight, while watching Bound Hunt and hoping he stays alive. Two more wildcats run out of the woods to help fight the eagle. Eventually, they kill it.
Galestar is overcome with relief, and thinks back to all the tragedies that have befallen StormClan. Now, it feels as though the spirits are watching over her at last. Bound Hunt stalks over to Galestar and Pebble Lunge, and he scolds the trainee for running across the meadow before. The brown tabby apologizes, and Bound Hunt apologizes as well, only wishing for him to be safe. Galestar realizes they love each other, and wonders if her heart still lies with Stripestar.
