Chapter description[]

In the wake of the battle against ThunderClan, Galestar isolates herself in her den, overcome with guilt and doubt. Pebblenose brings her a vole and reminds her of her worth, insisting that Fogdrift's death was not her fault. She is grateful for his support, thankful that they are still friends, even if they are no longer mates.
Galestar decides that she will apologize to Stripestar in person, though Pebblenose points out that tensions between the two Clans are high due to the battle. Galestar is shocked to find out that her warriors have been stealing ThunderClan prey, which only strengthens her resolve and desire to speak to the ThunderClan leader. Pebblenose attempts to warn her again against visiting ThunderClan, though Galestar remains firm in her desire and prepares to depart.
As Galestar approaches the border, several ThunderClan cats turn her away with hostility. She begins to return to WindClan's camp before stopping to hunt, hoping to bring a peace offering to the grieving Clan. She re-approaches the ThunderClan border with a rabbit, but is seen by two more warriors and escorted to ThunderClan's camp.
Upon her arrival, Galestar enters Stripestar's den to see the leader grieving his lost mate. He thanks her for the prey, but does not eat, prompting Galestar to apologize for the battle and admit the truth: that WindClan had been trespassing, and kept it a secret from her and Pebblenose. She promises the tabby tom that it will not happen again before explaining that she had tried everything she could to save Fogdrift. She stops short after realizing she has been rambling, and pleads with Stripestar to believe her.
Stripestar accepts her apology, and explains that he asked his warriors to bring her to him, wanting to explain that he did not blame her for Fogdrift's death. He takes responsibility for the attack, telling Galestar that Tinyclaw and Fogdrift both tried to warn him against the battle, but he ignored them due to Twolegs disrupting the prey. Galestar is sympathetic towards his plight, but uncertain of what she could do to help, as WindClan has its own mouths to feed. She suggests sharing her Clan's prey, but Stripestar suggests instead that WindClan and ThunderClan form an alliance to claim Sunningrocks from RiverClan.
Galestar is skeptical at first, uncertain about the benefits for WindClan and worried about ShadowClan potentially retaliating. Stripestar offers WindClan hunting rights on ThunderClan territory, should they win, and together, the two leaders decide to attack in two days' time. Galestar is escorted back to her Clan's territory, reflecting on the first time they met and how neither even dreamed of becoming leaders.
