| "No cat is to blame. No cat but me. All the pain... All the suffering... I caused it, and I alone. I made a terrible mistake. StormClan was a disaster. We never found a home for ourselves. We never truly became one Clan, and I should never have tried to make it so. Now we beg our fellow Clans to receive us back as ThunderClan and WindClan. Just as it has always been. As for myself... I will suffer any punishment that any cat, or StarClan, thinks fitting." |

Chapter description[]
- Stripestar leads ThunderClan through Highstones and along the Thunderpath, recalling how the Clan had stayed up last night to discuss what to do next. Tinyclaw had urged them to ask for StarClan's approval first, while Tumbletail insisted they fight for their territory back as soon as possible. Whitestep had come up with a compromise in the end: scout the forest and then speak with StarClan. Ripping him out of his thoughts, Frecklepelt hisses, announcing that she smells ShadowClan nearby. Stripestar commands his Clan to be cautious, and it does not take long for warriors of the foreign Clan to show themselves. Among them is Graytail, who recognizes Stripestar. Tinyclaw asks to speak with Snakestar, though the ShadowClan warrior tells them that he is at Fourtrees with Birchstar, holding a Gathering to discuss what to do about a large group of cats returning. Stripestar wonders if it might be WindClan and leads ThunderClan to Fourtrees.
- As they make their way there, sounds of growls and snarls are heard from a distance, and when they arrive, they find cats arguing over WindClan's former territory. Stripestar looks around for Galestar and is hurt when he does not find her in the crowd. With eyes suddenly on WindClan, Tinyclaw speaks up, declaring their return. Birchstar snarkily reminds them that their respective Clans are no more, as they had left them behind to form StormClan. Ashamed, the former members of the joined Clan fall silent until Stripestar stands up to them. He takes the blame for the suffering that StormClan had caused its cats, admitting that it was a mistake. As he looks around himself, Stripestar feels relief at the realization that no cat is expressing pity. Fourtrees is quiet yet again before Snakestar notes Galestar's absence, to which Goldenleaf explains that they had left her behind in a flood. Some of the gathered cats openly grieve, while others condemn Stripestar for abandoning his mate.
- Unshaken by the outcry, Stripestar stresses that they can exile him—but only after he gets a chance to talk with StarClan about bringing ThunderClan and WindClan back. Snakestar and Birchstar have divided opinions on whether to give back the territory that they had claimed after the creation of StormClan. They are silenced by Shineflower, who reminds them that their ancestors had previously given her a vision of StormClan's end, and that they do not condone the living cats making decisions about the stragglers. Stripestar is hit with anxiety about what StarClan will decide.
