Chapter description

Stripestar and Galestar sit at Fourtrees, where they decide to tell ThunderClan and WindClan that they are mates. Galestar worries about what Pebblenose will think, and together they wonder how to make their relationship work. Stripestar offers an idea, suggesting they combine their Clans into one. Galestar wonders how it could work, as their Clanmates will likely be hard to convince. She recalls Birchstar talking about a potential alliance between ShadowClan and RiverClan, to which Stripestar realizes they do not have much time left, as Galestar is expecting his kits.

The next day, Stripestar leads his Clan to Fourtrees, where Galestar and WindClan are already waiting in confusion. Stripestar explains that ThunderClan owes WindClan for their help with conquering Sunningrocks, and publicly suggests the two Clans merge.

Thrushcall questions the idea, and Stripestar notes that he does not seem angry, just confused. Other cats begin to speak up, all objecting to the idea and questioning the logistics of such a merger until Galestar speaks up. Galestar explains that neither Clan will be replacing the other, and instead she and Stripestar plan to form a new Clan: StormClan.

Stripestar continues on, explaining that StormClan will be larger and stronger than any other. He tells the gathered cats that StarClan approves as well, revealing that Galestar is carrying his kits, shocking both Clans. Pebblenose is shocked by the news, and Stripestar recalls that he and Galestar never had kits together, worried that he may be upset. Pebblenose congratulates Galestar on the litter, and other cats begin to speak their tentative support, ending in a chant of the new Clan's name.

Three days later, Stripestar reflects on how excited his Clanmates are now that the Clans have merged while on his way to the Moonstone. He recalls the ideas put in place: Tinyclaw and Pebblenose remaining deputies as WindClan moves into ThunderClan's camp, though he secretly worries about StarClan's thoughts.

Partway through the journey, Stoneflower stops Stripestar, pointing out that Galestar and Goldenleaf have stopped to watch Kestrelwing. When asked, Kestrelwing merely tells the group that he has a bad feeling, convinced that StarClan will not give their blessing for the merger, citing that there should be five Clans. Galestar irritably explains that SkyClan, the fifth Clan, is already gone, and that the five Clans are no more, and the group continues on.

At the Moonstone, Stripestar relaxes as he senses StarClan nearby and catches Galestar staring at the rock in wonder. The five cats touch the Moonstone, dreaming themselves into StarClan's hunting grounds, where Kestrelwing asks StarClan to offer their guidance. Thunderstar is the first to appear, alongside Windstar, who tell the cats they should be asking for forgiveness. Shadowstar tells them that StormClan is doomed to fail, citing the Blazing Star, but Galestar protests and reminds the group that the five Clans are no more.

Windstar announces that StarClan does not approve of the creation of StormClan, and Riverstar adds that Galestar and Stripestar will lose their nine lives. Stripestar sits, defeated and mournful, knowing now that his idea had been for nothing. He glances over at Galestar, however, and grows angry, wanting to support his mate. He refuses to accept StarClan's decision, and severs StormClan's connection to their ancestors. Kestrelwing begs him to reconsider, however both Stripestar and Galestar remain steadfast.

In the wake of their decision, Stripestar feels his nine lives being stripped from him, and sees Galestar going through the same ordeal. He wakes beside the Moonstone, worrying for a moment that Galestar did not survive, but she wakes and reassures him that the kits are safe. The three medicine cats stare at the leaders, and Kestrelwing tells them that he hopes they are satisfied with their decision.
