| "The rain became a downpour. And now the visibility was worse—much worse. Stripestar could barely see a tail-length in front of him. [...] The sky darkened. Thunder rolled. Then, quite suddenly, the storm broke with the ferocity of a snapping dog. The rain came down in a savage deluge that soaked every cat within a heartbeat. Lightning flashed, then faded to leave a darkness that was almost like night. The thunder that followed was so loud and long that it made Stripestar cringe, and several cats yowled out loud with shock." |
| — Narrator about the abrupt, second onset of the dangerous storm in StormClan's Folly, page 347 |
The storm at the sun-drown-place took place in StormClan's Folly, chasing StormClan out of the sun-drown-place and permanently separating Galestar and her kits from Stripestar and the rest of StormClan.[6] Unable to find his missing mate and kits, Stripestar ends up leading StormClan away from the sun-drown-place and returning to the forest,[7] while Galestar and her kits join the wildcats and start a new life.[8]
Summary[]
Premise[]
- «Once more [Galestar] felt hope bloom inside her for them all—a hope she'd thought was dead. Hope for her and Stripestar, for StormClan, and most importantly for their kits. We really do have a future. Now all they had to do was fight for it.»
- —Galestar's thoughts about going to the sun-drown-place StormClan's Folly, page 301
A gull is one of the signs in Stripestar's dreams of dangers to come
- Following a fire that ravages their territory, Galestar and Stripestar decide to lead StormClan on a perilous journey to a new home.[9] Along the way, they reach the mountains, where they meet the Tribe of Rushing Water and their leader, Stoneteller. Stoneteller delivers a grim warning to stay away from an endless lake, and to watch out for a fish with legs.[10] After resting with the Tribe for a short while, StormClan moves on, and Stripestar begins to experience disturbing dreams of a mountain, a gull, and a rock with legs, though he refuses to tell Galestar about it.[11] He keeps the dreams to himself, feeling distressed by the idea of returning to the mountains and showing reluctance to move to the fox-head mountain after the death of Mudsplash.[12][13]
- When hardship strikes on the mountain and Rainkit loses her life to a hawk, StormClan demands to return to the forest. However, on the way, Galestar discovers that she is expecting more kits, and Goldenleaf reveals to StormClan that she has been shown a new home for StormClan by Kestrelwing: an endless lake with a drowning sun where StormClan can be at peace, and where the kits play freely. She declares it to be StormClan's destined home, referencing a greenleaf storm in which she saw a bolt of lightning, similar to the mark of StormClan.[14] Despite remembering Stoneteller's warning, Galestar and Stripestar feel hopeful about this new home,[14] and they lead StormClan to the endless lake.[15]
Overview[]
- "The storm is getting worse! It's now or never. Stay, and we all die."
- ―Spotnose's warning to Stripestar as the storm worsens StormClan's Folly, page 352
- When the nursery begins to flood, Galestar pushes aside her anger to admit that the storm is too dangerous for StormClan to stay. Amidst pounding rain and harsh winds, StormClan attempts to escape by climbing slippery rocks, with Galestar reassuring her kits. Rocks tumble from above, and Thrushkit is injured when his paw is struck. The Clan finds shelter under an overhang until the storm clears, with Galestar remaining angry with Stripestar.[18] After two days, the storm appears to have calmed, and StormClan attempts to move on once again, continuing their climb. As they travel, the storm worsens again, with lashing rain, violent winds, and dreadful visibility. After she is knocked over the edge, Spotnose is saved by Stripestar and Berryfall, but during their distraction, they lose Galestar and the kits. A brief attempt to find them fails, and StormClan leaves the lake to find safety. The next morning, Stripestar tries again to find his mate and kits, but is unsuccessful, and StormClan leaves them behind.[6][19] Meanwhile, Galestar and her kits are rescued by a group of wildcats.[20]
Description[]
Struggle to survive[]
- Galestar: "You're right. I don't like this place either. And I've been thinking—what if Goldenleaf was wrong about her dream after all? Would Kestrelwing really have led us into danger again?"
- Stripestar: "I don't think so. But where does that leave us? Do we tell the Clan that we're moving on again?"
- StormClan's Folly, pages 306-307
StormClan struggles to survive at the sun-drown-place
- After a half-moon, life at the sun-drown-place proves nearly impossible: storms regularly destroy StormClan's camp and prey is difficult to come by, as the gulls and crabs fight back, resulting in injuries. After failing to catch a gull, Stripestar manages to find a shrew to take home. He returns to camp, where the cats busily work to rebuild their camp after the last storm. Stripestar and Galestar discuss the undesirable living conditions and decide to tell the Clan that they will leave once Galestar's kits are old enough. Stripestar heads out again, this time taking Tumbletail to the carrionplace, where they find a rat to hunt. As they hunt, however, they and the rat are captured in tangles by a Twoleg; during the struggle, Stripestar is bitten by the rat. The Twoleg takes them to a Twoleg den, where they see many animals cooped up in wooden contraptions. Desperately, Stripestar and Tumbletail manage to escape, and they catch a meager haul of prey. Stripestar warns Tumbletail not to speak of what happened.[15]
- Galestar's kits are born, and she and Stripestar name them Fogkit, Thrushkit, and Pebblekit. Galestar notices the rat bite, but Stripestar lies to her about how he obtained the wound. The kits grow old enough to journey outside the nursery, and Galestar frets over Stripestar's secretive behavior.[16] The cats continue to compete with the gulls for food. Out on patrol with Tumbletail, Swiftwing, and Roughpelt, Stripestar is unsuccessful at finding food. Frustrated with the lack of food, his cats suggest that they hunt at the carrionplace again, but Stripestar bitterly refuses. On the way home, Stripestar senses a strong storm on the way. When he stumbles upon an orange object with five legs—the fish with legs that his dreams and Stoneteller had warned of—Stripestar realizes that the coming storm will be worse than he had believed.[17]
Revelations[]
- "Wait. I remember that night. I knew something was wrong. And I asked you what had happened, but you wouldn't answer me. Now you're trying to tell me you had a dream that warned us something terrible was going to happen. You had it moons ago. And you kept it to yourself?"
- ―Galestar confronting Stripestar about his dream StormClan's Folly, pages 331-332
Escape from the storm[]
- «Her rage had faded away at long last, like a forest fire burning itself into nothing. Now Galestar was left only with the cold ashes of her sorrow and her hurt. How could he? They'd agreed to be partners. Equals. Now Galestar understood at last that she had been seeing things differently from Stripestar. Perhaps she always had. Because apparently, he trusted Tinyclaw, of all cats, more than her. To make matters worse, she couldn't ignore his dream. She had been so furious with Stripestar for not sharing it with her. But it didn't mean that he was wrong about it. Perhaps it really was a warning. Was she doing the right thing, insisting on staying here?»
- —Galestar's conflicted thoughts about Stripestar and his dream StormClan's Folly, pages 335-336
StormClan struggles to escape the storm
- As the storm worsens, Galestar attempts to comfort her frightened kits, reflecting on her upset with Stripestar's secrecy and wondering if staying is the right choice. Listening as the storm grows more aggressive, Galestar soon realizes that the nursery is flooding and that they must leave. Taking her kits outside, she finds Stripestar and tells him that they need to go. Once gathered, she leads the Clan up the rock face alongside the lake, guiding her kittens along. She searches desperately for shelter as the storm lashes the Clan, unable to check on her Clanmates behind. Rocks suddenly tumble down the cliff, with one injuring Thrushkit's paw, causing the kits to panic. Galestar finally finds an overhang and takes her Clan to shelter, carrying Thrushkit. A few cats are injured, but every cat is together. Galestar admits to Stripestar that he had been right, before curling up with her kits, feeling distrustful toward her mate.[18]
- Two days later, the storm has calmed enough that Stripestar decides the Clan can continue onward. Reassuring his kits and telling Thrushkit to watch over his mother, Stripestar takes the lead, upset that Galestar's anger has not dissipated. Through the morning, they travel through a drizzle under cloudy skies, and soon head inland. The storm soon breaks again, however, drenching the cats and making it nearly impossible for them to travel. Stripestar finds it difficult to keep an eye on his family, especially once the storm reaches its worst, and he struggles to keep the Clan together. When rocks are dislodged from the cliff, Spotnose falls over the edge, and Stripestar and Berryfall rush to save her. They hurry to catch up with StormClan, but Stripestar realizes that his mate and kits are missing, and no cat knows where they are. Stripestar divides the Clan to search for his family, but their efforts are futile. Hail begins to fall as the storm continues to strengthen, and Stripestar is forced to give up the search for his Clan's safety. StormClan makes it to the top of the hill and takes shelter beneath a copse.[6]
Fruitless search[]
- «You knew. You dreamed that this would happen. That disaster was upon you. And you led StormClan straight into it.»
- —The words Stripestar imagines a gull to be saying to him StormClan's Folly, page 356
- Galestar and her kits are separated from StormClan after Galestar is forced to go searching for Pebblekit. They attempt to catch up but are unable to find their Clanmates again, and Galestar decides to shelter in a crevice protected by two boulders. There, the family ends up trapped when more rocks fall in the storm. Galestar abruptly wakes to find that the storm has halted. She attempts to push the rock blocking the way out, but is not strong enough to move it. She feels furious with Stripestar's refusal to share his dream with her, and she lets out a growl. Another growl answers her, and when a strange creature begins to push the rock, she helps, hoping that it is not a predator. She and her kits are discovered by three friendly wildcats—Bound Hunt, Hunt Fly, and Whisper Groom—who offer to take them to their camp to rest. Reluctantly, Galestar accepts their offer, and she and her kits are taken to the wildcats' camp, where they are fed and groomed. Galestar sleeps until after moonhigh, and is fearful that there will be no trace left of her Clan.[20]
Aftermath[]
Forever apart[]
- "Because there is no scent trail. Because StormClan is gone. It's time to give up the search—our Clanmates have left us behind. I don't know why, and I don't know where they've gone. But they have. And it's time for me to face the truth. They might be gone for good. And my kits might... My kits might never see their father again."
- ―Galestar's distress over StormClan's abandonment StormClan's Folly, page 391
Thunderstar and the other founders allow ThunderClan to return, with a price
- With Galestar and her kits lost, StormClan abandons the sun-drown-place. Stripestar is distressed over the loss of his family, and his heartbreak is worsened when StormClan decides that it is time to return to the forest after Goldenleaf receives a vision that StormClan must once again split in two.[19] After WindClan splits off in the middle of the night, Stripestar announces that, once ThunderClan returns to the forest, he will step down as leader, and he leads ThunderClan home.[7] At a Gathering, the Clans argue about what to do, and they are mortified to hear of StormClan's struggles. At Shineflower's advice, Birchstar and Snakestar decide to leave ThunderClan's and WindClan's fates up to StarClan.[21] Stripestar travels to the Moonstone with ThunderClan, where he begs StarClan for forgiveness. StarClan allows ThunderClan to stay, granted that StormClan is forgotten and that Stripestar steps down, making way for Whitestep to lead. Now a warrior once again, Stripebark spends his days serving ThunderClan, though he never forgets his mate and kits.[22]
- While with the wildcats, Galestar clings to her hope of finding her beloved mate and her Clan while bonding with Bound Hunt, who is developing feelings for her. She struggles with who she is now that she has lost everything. Her kits are granted their wildcat spirit guides and given wildcat names: Thrush Roll, Fog Nuzzle, and Pebble Lunge. Galestar also receives a guide, Rise Stretch, and a new name, Gale Rise, but she does not take on her wildcat name.[23] As her kits grow and she spends more time with the wildcats, Galestar continues to bond with Bound Hunt and to gain an appreciation for the wildcats' way of life. After Bound Hunt saves Pebble Lunge and comforts him lovingly, Galestar wonders if she still loves Stripestar.[24] Some time later, the wildcats gather to welcome Pebble Lunge, Thrush Roll, Fog Nuzzle, Wiggle Leap, and Flutter Sneeze as prowlers, with Galestar feeling more connected to the wildcats than ever. Through Dream Flow, Rise Stretch shows Galestar a vision of herself with a litter of hybrid kits and a wildcat mate. She chooses to stay with the wildcats permanently, taking Bound Hunt as a mate and finally accepting her new name, Gale Rise.[8]
Galestar's debt[]
- "How nice for you, that you had something wonderful. What you deserved was the Dark Forest. Was our whole life together a lie? Did you abandon me and our kits so you could take control of both Clans? We were trapped in the dark, alone, and you left us!"
- ―Galestar confronting Stripestar Ivypool's Heart, page 353
Ivypool and her companions help to settle the Clans' debt to the wildcats
- After her death, Galestar stayed with the wildcat ancestors.[25] Stripestar and the rest of the StormClan cats, however, ended up fading due to being forgotten by StarClan and the living.[26] Wishing for the wildcats to be repaid for rescuing her and her kits following the storm, Galestar sends a vision of StormClan searching for her to the WindClan medicine cat, Whistlepaw.[27][25] This leads Whistlepaw on a journey alongside Rootspring, Ivypool, Icewing, and Dovewing to find out the meaning of her dream.[28] After days of travel, the five cats discover two wildcat mates, Stalk Purr and Tumble Leap, imprisoned by a cruel Twoleg along with other exotic animals. After learning from them about the Star Tree,[29] the Clan cats head there and manage to make contact with Galestar. Galestar tells them the tragic tale of StormClan's collapse, and reveals that she sent Whistlepaw her vision. She asks the Clan cats to save Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr and return them to the wildcats.[25]
- Successfully freeing Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr from the Twolegplace, the Clan cats travel with them to find the wildcats in the mountains.[30][31] When Stalk Purr's kits arrive, however, Ivypool and Icewing decide to head on by themselves to find the wildcats.[32] They manage to find the wildcats, and though the wildcats are initially hostile due to Galestar's abandonment seasons ago, Ivypool and Icewing earn their trust by helping to fight off foxes.[33][34] In exchange, the wildcat elders help Ivypool and Icewing contact Galestar again, and they convince her to visit StarClan and remind them of StormClan so that she may speak with Stripestar.[35] Galestar tells StarClan the story of StormClan, bringing the forgotten Clan back to memory and allowing Stripestar and the rest of StormClan to rejoin their ancestors.[36] Galestar is able to make amends with her former mate and Clan,[26] while Stalk Purr, Tumble Leap, and their kits are reunited with their fellow wildcats.[37]
Characters[]
Galestar[]
- «For a long while [Galestar] lay shivering, cold and lonely. She had never been so tired yet so unable to sleep. And from time to time, she cast a glance at the tom she had thought she had known so well, where he lay alone on the other side of the ledge, gazing out as the storm lashed at the endless lake. Who had he been, this whole time? Could she ever learn to trust him again?»
- —Galestar's thoughts about Stripestar StormClan's Folly, page 343
Galestar feels deeply betrayed by Stripestar's secrecy that has led to endless tragedy
- Galestar is the leader of StormClan alongside Stripestar, and is expecting his kits. Initially hopeful about the endless lake, Galestar and Stripestar soon realize that it may be an unsuitable environment for kits, as the storms are dangerous and there is little prey. She decides to tell their Clanmates about their decision to find a new home once again.[15] Soon after, Galestar ends up giving birth to Thrushkit, Pebblekit, and Fogkit, bringing joy to StormClan, though the moment is tainted as Galestar realizes that Stripestar has once again lied to her, this time about a mysterious injury he has sustained. This knowledge haunts Galestar as she proudly watches her kittens grow.[16] When Stripestar finds the signs that his dreams are coming true, he rushes home to tell Galestar. Galestar, however, is infuriated that Stripestar has hidden such important dreams from her, and that he only deemed it necessary to tell Tinyclaw. In a rage, feeling betrayed, Galestar refuses to leave the sun-drown-place until her kits are old enough to travel.[17]
- The storm breaks out, growing evermore violent. As she seethes over Stripestar's dishonesty, Galestar realizes that the nursery is flooding, and she hurriedly leads her kits outside to find Stripestar. She tells him that they need to leave, and StormClan quickly sets off, climbing the rocks to escape the lake. Galestar helps lead StormClan, comforting her kits along the way through harsh winds and rain. Thrushkit is injured by a falling rock, and Galestar manages to find an overhang for StormClan to shelter under. She admits to Stripestar that he had been right about leaving, but, still upset with him, she sleeps apart from him, questioning if she can trust him.[18]
- When the Clan sets out again two days later in calmer weather, Galestar remains distant and cold toward Stripestar. As the storm again worsens, Galestar and her kits begin to fall behind Stripestar;[6] when Galestar splits off from StormClan to find Pebblekit, she loses StormClan. She and her kits take shelter in a crevice, but are soon trapped by a rockfall, and Galestar can only fume over her dispute with her mate. Soon enough, however, the family is found by a patrol of wildcats led by Bound Hunt, who offers to take them back to his group. Galestar and her kits rest with the wildcats and are well taken care of, but Galestar worries about losing StormClan for good, especially when she wakes up during more rainfall.[20]
Stripestar[]
- «As Stripestar watched [Galestar] go, he felt as though his heart was breaking. My kits, again. Not our kits. He could hardly believe those words had escaped her mouth. He had lost the argument, of course. But now an even worse fear had taken hold, chilling him to the bone. A fear that the argument wasn't all that he had lost. In the distance, thunder rolled.»
- —Stripestar's fears after his argument with Galestar about leaving StormClan's Folly, pages 333-334
Stripestar despairs over the loss of his family in the storm
- Stripestar is the leader of StormClan alongside his mate, Galestar. Lamenting over the lack of easy prey, Stripestar returns home and speaks with Galestar about the dangers in the sun-drown-place. Knowing the lake is too dangerous for kits, they agree that StormClan should move on soon. While Galestar discusses the plan with StormClan, Stripestar attempts to hunt with Tumbletail. While catching a rat, they find themselves captured by a Twoleg, and Stripestar is bitten by the rat. Realizing that the Twoleg wants to hold them captive, the two cats manage to escape. They bring home a pathetic haul of prey, returning just in time for Galestar's kitting.[15] Stripestar lies to her about his injury, to her dismay.[16] Soon after, while heading home with an unsuccessful patrol, Stripestar recognizes the warning signs from his dreams and realizes that a treacherous storm is coming. He runs home to plead with Galestar that they should leave, finally confessing to her about his dream, but Galestar is enraged by his secrecy and refuses to leave, despite his best efforts. He worries about the cost of their argument.[17]
- When Galestar decides that the storm has grown too severe to leave, Stripestar helps lead the Clan to escape, keeping them together. After Thrushkit is injured by tumbling rocks, Stripestar worries for him, but is also disturbed by Galestar's distance.[18] Two days after, when the storm calms, an exhausted Stripestar leads StormClan off again, though Galestar's coldness toward him bothers him. As they travel, the storm begins to intensify again, and Stripestar finds it more and more difficult to track his mate and kits as they fall behind. The cats are caught in the violent weather, and Stripestar works together with Berryfall to save Spotnose when she is knocked from the ledge. When they meet StormClan again, Stripestar is horrified to find that his mate and kits have been lost. Their search proving fruitless, StormClan is forced to move on, finding a safe copse to rest in after they escape the lake. Stripestar leads a patrol out to initiate another search, but despair sets in as Galestar and her kits are nowhere to be found, and Stripestar wonders if they are dead.[6] At last, StormClan moves on without Stripestar's family.[19]
Fogkit, Thrushkit, and Pebblekit[]
- «Rain showered down, drenching them within heartbeats. Wind thrashed at their wet pelts. Thrushkit yelped. Fogkit whimpered. All three kits cowered, helpless in the face of the storm. They shivered like leaves, their whiskers drooping, heavy with raindrops.»
- —The kits in the storm StormClan's Folly, page 338
- As StormClan prepares to set out two days later, Stripestar encourages his kittens to look after their mother, and Galestar carries the injured Thrushkit. Galestar and the kits trail along as Stripestar leads the Clan, but as the storm begins to rage once again, the black-and-white she-cat and her kittens begin to fall behind.[6] Galestar struggles to keep her petrified kits together as they wail in fear. Fogkit flees in terror from her mother, and when she finds her, Galestar then searches out Pebblekit. They end up separated from StormClan, and they shelter in a crevice, where Galestar's kits comfort her, cuddling close. They are soon rescued by a group of strange wildcats, about whom the kittens are curious. The wildcats offer for the family to go home with them for safety and rest, and Galestar hesitantly agrees. Bound Hunt carries Fogkit and Pebblekit, proving friendly, and the wildcats guide them back to their group. There, the kits are fed and groomed by the she-cats.[20]
Quotes[]
- Galestar: "I'll do it. It will be better coming from me. I'm heavy with kits, after all. They'll understand that I'm only doing what's best for the litter. What I have to do."
- Stripestar: "Then I'll go hunting. I'm sick of gull! I want to find some real fresh-kill. That should cheer every cat up."
- StormClan's Folly, page 307
- «Galestar found herself worrying again without quite knowing why. Stripestar was a brave, kind tom, and a fine father. And yet...sometimes he was so secretive. Why keep anything from her? Weren't they mates? Hadn't they given up everything for each other? Up in the sky, a bank of clouds passed over the sun, and for just a moment the world was thrown into shadow.»
- —Galestar's worries about Stripestar's secrecy StormClan's Folly, page 324
- Stripestar: "But you don't understand... It's for the kits that I'm doing this. I'm worried about them, Galestar. Please...we have to leave before something terrible happens. While the Clan will still follow us. While we still have a Clan."
- Galestar: "You're asking my permission now, are you? If you'd shared your secrets with me, Stripestar, you wouldn't have to."
- StormClan's Folly, page 333
- «The storm seemed to blow more savagely all the time. Lightning flashed, thunder rolled, and great gusts of rain swept across them until they were all soaked to the skin. In the darkness and the driving rain, Galestar couldn't see more than a fox-length in front of her, and there was no telling if the whole Clan was managing to stick together. She was so cold that her tail had gone numb. Her paws too. Everything.»
- —Galestar's experience of the first onset of the storm StormClan's Folly, page 340
- «If only [Stripestar] had told Galestar right away that morning after the dream. If only they had never come here. If only he had tried to persuade her not to leave their camp when the storm first broke... But he hadn't done any of those things, and now Galestar and Pebblekit and Thrushkit and Fogkit had paid the price for it. Because of me.»
- —Stripestar's thoughts about losing his family StormClan's Folly, pages 356-357
- «Galestar sank back, despair rising as though to drown her, like water flooding an empty cave. She could see that the ground was already waterlogged, the grass wet all around. By morning, any lingering scent trail left by StormClan would be gone. Destroyed by the storm. Just like it destroyed everything else. Fool! Mouse-brain! Would she never learn? She should have rejected the wildcats' help. She should have set out with the kits right away and sought out StormClan while they were still close by. But now it was too late. Her Clan was surely gone. Stripestar was gone. All because of her and her wretched decisions. What would become of her now? What would become of her kits?»
