"That's because we haven't been many other places. Just wait. Once we're on our own, we're going to travel everywhere. It'll be fun."
— Stream to Earth in Tree's Roots, chapter 1

Stream is a long-legged[4] tabby tom with blue eyes.[2]

Tree's Roots[]

"It is hard. You should try it yourself before you start teasing Earth."
―Stream to Ice and Sunrise about talking to the land Tree's Roots, chapter 1
Stream is a four moon old kit of the Sisters, and Earth's best friend. Practicing talking to the land with Earth, he confesses he also can't concentrate, teasingly saying it's probably because Earth's fur is so bright. Streams squints his eyes in exaggeration, causing Earth to jump on him and start a playfight, until Stream kicks him off. He comments that Earth is pretty strong for a kit of his size, since Earth is smaller than the other Sister cats. Earth is somewhat grumpy about it, and Stream apologizes to his friend, pointing out that he was still bigger than the six moon old everkits they had seen a moon ago.
While the two continue trying to meditate, Earth comments that he likes the valley the Sisters are living in now better than the Twopawplace they had been born in. Stream points out there's no point getting attached, as they'll soon start their wander and the Sisters will move on. When Earth suggests they could maybe come back and settle there one day, Stream opens his eyes and yowls that staying in one place isn't what toms do. Earth reluctantly concedes he might be right, and says they might end up in a worse territory than this, but Stream just says that it's because they haven't been many places, and it'll be fun when they travel together.
Though unsure what Moonlight actually meant by speaking to the land, the two resume trying, and while nothing happens to Earth, he sees Stream managing to do it. He speaks until he opens his eyes again, eyes peaceful and claiming he's now ready. The pair return to the camp where Sunrise pesters them with questions, asking if they managed to do it. Ice teasingly calls Earth out on the fact he didn't actually talk to the land, though Stream defends him, agreeing that it is a hard thing to do and they should try doing it themselves.
Later that night Stream joins The Sisters in saying farewell to Chestnut and Snail, who are going on their wander. A storm quickly rolls in afterwards, and Earth follows Stream back to the camp, curling beside him when they go to sleep. In the middle of the night the storm gets much worse, with the older kits waking up and looking for Moonlight. Stream volunteers to look the way Snail and Chestnut had left, running off before Earth can finish his protest that they should wait. Earth later hears Stream yowling for help, and he runs off trying to find him. He eventually finds Stream on top of a rocky hill, terrified. He tells his friend that they'll be fine, and the two kits try to get down the muddy hill, but a strike of lightning hits Stream and kills him.
The Sisters mourn Stream's death, but make it clear that they do not intend to sing for him. Earth angrily asks his mother Moonlight why, and she answers that it is unnecessary because Stream, like all toms, was destined to return to the earth. During the mourning ceremony, the ghost of Stream and other ancestors of the Sisters appear, and Petal asks her son if he is okay. Earth, however, does not see them.
Stream's death continues to haunt Earth, who is fearful of being alone when he goes on his wander. During Earth's farewell ceremony, Petal says that she believes Stream will watch over him. After being forced out, Earth tries many times to see his dead friend, but fails, much to his sadness and disappointment.
