| "Rogue cats come to the Twoleg farm sometimes, when they have traveled far and are in need of shelter for the night and a spare mouse or two. Cats who live toward the place where the sun sets. They have told Barley and me about a place where there is more water than you could possibly imagine, like a river that has only one bank, and it's too salty to drink. Every night it swallows the sun in a flash of fire, bleeding into the waves without a sound." |
| — Ravenpaw to Brambleclaw about the sun-drown-place in Midnight, page 93 |
The sun-drown-place,[3] also known as the sun-drown-water,[4][5][6][7][8] is where the sun sets, named for the illusion of the sun being swallowed by the expanse of water.[3] The sun-drown-place is where four cats from the Clans were sent to meet with Midnight to learn the meaning of a prophecy.[9] The Twoleg name for the ocean is Whit Bay, and the cliffs are known as Whit Cliffs.[3]
Description[]
- «Beyond the shore the cats could see the sun-drown-place. Ivypool let out a gasp of wonder at the sight of it. There was so much water, dazzling in the sun, endless water with no sign of the opposite shore. Waves rolled up onto the sand and were sucked back again in a continuous roar. She wrinkled her nose at the strong stench of fish in the air, and the sharp tang that she had picked up before was much stronger here. Her belly lurched as the mingled scents almost overwhelmed her.»

- Gulls, crabs, and fish live in the water and on the sandy beach,[13] which disappears with the tides and floods the crag-like caves.[14] Twolegs and their kits play on the sand and in the water, sometimes using water monsters to get around.[15]
Significance[]
- Main article: Journey to Midnight
- Crowpaw: "Then Brambleclaw had another dream, about a stretch of water so big that you couldn't see the far side of it. Every night the sun drowned in it."
- Nightcloud: "The sun drowned? Come on, Crowpaw. Even a kit knows that the sun can't drown."
- Onestar's Confession, page 141
- After his dream of drowning in salty water and seeing the sun sink into the waves, Brambleclaw confides in Ravenpaw. Ravenpaw reveals that the place Brambleclaw has dreamed about is real, and can be reached by walking in the same direction as the setting sun.[11] Believing this dream to be connected to the one he, Tawnypelt, Feathertail, and Crowpaw shared, the four cats agree to journey to the sun-drown-place,[16] with Stormfur and Squirrelpaw joining in.[17] The cats each have illusions of tasting salt water during their journey, and eventually reach the cliffs. On the treacherous climb down, Brambleclaw falls into the salty water and nearly drowns, saved by Squirrelpaw and Stormfur pulling him into the cave with teeth.[10] Midnight is revealed to be the name of an ancient badger who has made her den in the back of the cave. She warns the Clan cats that the forest's destruction is imminent, and that they must lead their Clans to a new home.[12] The idea of the sun disappearing from the edge of sky behind endless water tends to make cats skeptical,[18] and few have trouble believing it until they see it for themselves.[13][11][19]
Location history[]
- «For a moment [Brambleclaw] lay stunned. A booming echo thundered in his ears, and he felt as if the whole world were spinning around. Then he opened his eyes and stared in horror as he saw the shape of a massive gaping mouth with teeth closing on him, outlined against the red evening sky.»

- The sun-drown-place is first discovered by the cats of StormClan upon leaving the forest territories, when the leaders of WindClan and ThunderClan merge their respective Clans so they can be mates. They decide to make a temporary camp on the cliffs, and Galestar has her kits near the salty water. When they attempt to find a more suitable hunting ground, a storm rolls in, and Galestar, Thrushkit, Pebblekit, and Fogkit are separated from Stripestar and the rest of their Clanmates, and trapped in a rockslide.[20]
- The sun-drown-place is the home of Midnight, an ancient spirit who can appear physically in the world to give prophecies and signs to the Clans. When Twolegs threaten the forest territories, StarClan sends a cat from each Clan a message, urging them to listen to what she has to say.[21] Upon their arrival to the sun-drown-place, Midnight explains to Brambleclaw, Squirrelpaw, Crowpaw, Tawnypelt, Feathertail, and Stormfur that they must seek a new home.[12] After being separated from the Clans, Graystripe and his mate, Millie, travel towards the sun-drown-place after Ravenpaw explains that the Clans traveled towards it to find a new home.[22] During their travels, they meet a loner named Diesel, who helps them find a monster to travel in to reach the sun-drown-place after Graystripe's injury.[23]
- When the Tribe and Clan cats journey to the mountains, they meet Purdy, and Squirrelflight explains to the apprentices that they met him on their first journey, and he helped them find the way to the sun-drown-place.[24] During their search for Sol and Midnight, a patrol consisting of Brambleclaw, Hazeltail, Hollyleaf, Lionblaze, and Birchfall travel to the sun-drown-place to retrieve the loner.[19] They reach the cliffs, but do not see Midnight or Sol nearby, and decide to search elsewhere. Birchfall is knocked into the water and nearly drowns, but is rescued by his Clanmates.[1] When the Clans are forced to contend with the Great Storm, large white birds from the sun-drown-place are blown close to the lake,[25] and the resulting storm surge floods the Clans' territories and contaminates the lake.[26] After Bramblestar's death and the lost connection to StarClan, Squirrelflight reminisces about the journey they took to the sun-drown-place, praising his bravery.[27]
- Seasons later, a WindClan medicine cat apprentice, Whistlepaw has a dream of [kits trapped near the sun-drown-place during a storm.[28] She, along with Dovewing, Ivypool, Rootspring, and Icewing journey towards the mountain seen in Whistlepaw's dream, located near the sun-drown-place.[29] Upon their arrival, Whistlepaw points out the things she recalls from her dream, such as the gulls and cliffs.[13] Galestar instructs them to return to the sun-drown-place to find the path over the mountains where the the current wildcats live so Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr can reunite with them.[20] At the sun-drown-place, Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr rekindle their senses to find fresh water and catch seagulls.[30]
