"The Clans seem to make the easiest things difficult."
— Sunrise to Rootspring on her beliefs of the Clans in Darkness Within, page 270

Sunrise is a long-furred,[5] big,[2] huge,[6] well-muscled and broad-shouldered,[7] pale[8] yellow she-cat with wide paws.[9][7]

Sunrise is a Sister under Moonlight's and Snow's leaderships. She was born to the Sisters' leader, Moonlight, along with her siblings, Ice and Earth. She remained in the Sisters and reunited with her brother again on bad terms, as Tree condemned Moonlight for abandoning him. Sunrise, Hawk, Tempest and Snow encountered a small ShadowClan patrol in their territory, and the skirmish resulted in Sunrise ripping Strikestone's ear and Stonewing critically injuring Sunrise. The Sisters sought help from ThunderClan for Sunrise's injury, though Bramblestar was conflicted to help them. Sunrise later fought in the battle against the Clans when the Sisters were being driven out of Clan territory, and was brave enough to take on Harestar during the battle, and survived, but after her mother Moonlight was slain in the battle the Sisters took refuge in the SkyClan camp for a short time before leaving Clan territory.

After Bristlefrost, Spotfur, Rootspring, and Needleclaw went on a journey to find the Sisters, Sunrise later met Needleclaw and Rootspring, her kin from Tree, and encouraged Rootspring to follow his heart and pursue his love for Bristlefrost, and also assisted him in discovering his powers as a cat with the Sisters' blood, while helping the Clans by performing the ceremony to summon ghosts.

Darkness Within[]

Sunrise: "Don't let go of Bristlefrost. You're in love with her, and she's in love with you."
Rootspring: "That's not true—"
Sunrise: "It's obvious. I don't understand why you need to lie."
—Sunrise telling Rootspring of his love for Bristlefrost Darkness Within, page 270
Rootspring, Bristlefrost, Needleclaw, and Spotfur are hunting when they come across Sunrise, who asks them why they are hunting so close to her territory. Bristlefrost prepares to fight, but Rootspring exclaims that they have found the Sisters. He explains that Leaf told them where the Sisters were, and they found them. Sunrise asks how Leaf is doing, and Rootspring replies that he is well. Sunrise brings them back to the Sisters' camp.
While Rootspring mingles among the Sisters' group, he recognizes Sunrise, whom he had learned was Tree's littermate, who had temporarily taken refuge in the SkyClan camp. Later, when the Sisters and the Clan cats were discussing the matter of how Moonlight and the group were driven out of Clan territory, Sunrise's eyes were dark as she says that it was probably good that Bramblestar was gone. Bristlefrost asks why, so she explains that when she was badly injured after a skirmish, Bramblestar refused to let his medicine cats treat her, and leaves Bristlefrost shaken. Sunrise credits Leafpool for saving her life. When Sunrise's mother, Moonlight, soon joins the Sisters' discussion, Sunrise adds that the Clans don't respect the Sisters, but Moonlight counters that they don't need the Clans' respect, and Hawk nods in agreement. Later on, the cats are all eating when Rootspring pushes a mouse toward Bristlefrost, and the she-cat takes it, resting her tail on his back. Sunrise glances warmly at their tails, but at this Bristlefrost is embarrassed and flicks her tail away, but Sunrise tells her there's no need to be shy about it, and that she's glad her kin has found a cat who's fond of him. Bristlefrost replies that they're just friends, but Sunrise seems unconvinced.
Needleclaw states that they can only be friends and nothing more. Sunrise is confused by this, and ask why. Needleclaw says that Rootspring wouldn't be disloyal to his Clan. The Sisters ask about this, and Needleclaw explains the the warrior code to them. Then, Sunrise tells the patrol that there are nests for all of them. The next day, they cross Twolegplace, using Sunrise's different route.
During the way back to the Clan territories, Moon gets caught in a vine, Sunrise pads forward and suggests that it's caught on something underground, and turns to Rootspring, saying that he has to be the one to find out what it is. He uses his powers and reports that the vine is snared in some roots, so Sunrise tells him to try to dig it up. Later on when the Sisters arrive at the lake, Tigerstar looks at Snow and Sunrise, asking if they were really able to help with finding Bramblestar's ghost, but Sunrise dismisses him, saying that they might not be able to help, and that they can begin the ceremony when Harestar arrives. Tigerstar tells her that they don't need to contact every spirit, just Bramblestar, and afterward Sunrise suggests that they still wait for Harestar and his patrol to arrive, and swishes her tail, adding that they might need the help of a Clan cat. But eventually the WindClan patrol arrives and the meeting begins. Sunrise summons Rootspring to the middle of the clearing, and the Sister begin to chant in order to summon the spirits, when they appear, the ghosts are unnecessarily hostile to the living, and, terrified, Rootspring presses against Sunrise. During all the commotion, Sunrise orders that the spirits be sent back. The Sisters send them away and try to recover from the shock. She says that the spirits were angry, and Snow agrees, stating that they wanted to hurt the living cats. After the discussion, Sunrise suggests that they stay in case of emergency, and the leaders agree.
When Hawkwing, Tigerstar, Shadowsight and others confront Ashfur about what he was doing to the spirits, he denies it and undermines the Sisters' ability to see dead cats and ghosts. Hawkwing is enraged at this and him and the ShadowClan leader attack and severely injure him.
Later in the SkyClan camp, Rootspring asks Sunrise what will happen if there is urgent trouble with the spirits, but Sunrise softly replies that Rootspring has the gift, and can summon them. They practice seeing and controlling the spirits, so Sunrise gives him instructions, telling Rootspring to lie down and try to get through to the spirits, and adds to feel his heart press again the ground. After he obeys, asks him if he detects anything. He tells her maybe, but at this she concludes the practice, saying he did enough. Squirrelflight asks Sunrise if she could attempt to summon Bramblestar's ghost again, and she replies that she will let her know if anything comes up, and Sunrise leaves the camp with the rest of the Sisters. Before she goes, she teases Rootspring about his love for Bristlefrost, arguing that they're in love with each other, adding that they don't have to hide it. Later on, when Bristlefrost admits her feelings for Rootspring, he happily notes that Sunrise was right.

The Place of No Stars[]

«Tree led the way down the path, with Snow, the white cat who was the Sisters' leader, hard on his paws. Several of her campmates followed; Bristlefrost recognized Sunrise, the plump, pale yellow she-cat, and Flurry.»
—The Sisters' arrival The Place of No Stars (book), page 245
Shadowsight suggests to Bristlefrost that she should ask the Sisters for advice on a different entry point into The Place of No Stars. Tree states that he will go to the Sisters. Soon after, he returns, with Snow, Flurry, and Sunrise. After Bristlefrost and Tree explain the situation, the Sisters agree to help. Tree also mentions that Rootspring is kin to Sunrise to encourage Snow to help them rescue Rootspring.

Squirrelflight's Hope[]

"You can argue until dawn for all I care. All I know is that StarClan hasn't told us to let this cat die. I'm fetching herbs to treat her. I will not sit vigil for a cat I could not save."
―Leafpool to the debating ThunderClan cats Squirrelflight's Hope, chapter 9
Sunrise is part of the Sisters, led by Moonlight. She is initially hostile towards Squirrelflight and Leafstar, but warms up to them. Two days later, a ThunderClan-SkyClan patrol comes to rescue their cats. Tree, SkyClan's mediator, recognizes Moonlight as his mother, who abandoned him as a kit per the Sisters' custom, and thus greets her in a hostile manner. Upon seeing Tree, Sunrise gets excited to see him after Moonlight cannot recognize him, and she calls him by his old name, Earth. Squirrelflight realizes that both Tree and Sunrise have the same pelt shade. However, Sunrise's excitement fades when Tree condemns his mother for abandoning him. Moonlight nonchalantly defends her actions as Sunrise stares at her paws in guilt.
Later on, Sunrise is part of a patrol with Snow, Hawk, and Tempest. They trespass onto ShadowClan territory, where Strikestone and Stonewing encounter them and try to fight them off. In the scuffle, Sunrise shreds Strikestone's ear, to which Stonewing severely wounds Sunrise's flank in retaliation before escaping with Strikestone. Due to the severity of the wound, Snow has the patrol go to ThunderClan territory to seek help from Squirrelflight. Squirrelflight encounters them while leading a patrol of her own, and decides to get Sunrise the help she needs. Bramblestar, furious that Squirrelflight has brought in strangers to the camp and went behind his back yet again, refuses to give Sunrise the treatment she needs. ThunderClan becomes divided between helping an innocent cat and fueling more fights against the other Clans. Ultimately, Bramblestar sends Jayfeather and Alderheart to the Moonpool to seek guidance from StarClan. Leafpool, however, knows that Sunrise is pressed for time and she needs treatment before the wound gets infected, and manages to convince Bramblestar to at least let her dress the wound to prevent an infection.
At the following Gathering, Tigerstar announces the Sisters' presence near Clan territory, and that they attacked Strikestone and Stonewing, and angrily reveals that Strikestone's wounded ear got infected and couldn't be saved, resulting in Strikestone losing his hearing in that ear. RiverClan and WindClan agree, though ThunderClan lies about sheltering the Sisters in their camp, while SkyClan remains neutral. After the Gathering, Bramblestar tells Squirrelflight that the Sisters need to leave ThunderClan's camp before another fight instigates. Squirrelflight runs ahead and tells the four she-cats to leave. Snow, Tempest, and Hawk fear that Sunrise isn't fit enough to travel, but Leafpool assures that they just need to watch over her for the time being and treat her wound. Squirrelflight escorts the Sisters' patrol to their camp. Along the way, Squirrelflight and the other Sisters help Sunrise walk, supporting her. They get back to camp, and Furze asks how Sunrise is doing. She replies that she is recovering, while Moonlight thanks Squirrelflight for sheltering the injured cat. Squirrelflight warns the Sisters to be cautious near the Clans' borders, and bids them farewell.
Squirrelflight and Leafpool arrive at the Sisters' camp several sunrises later and Leafpool asks to see how Sunrise's recovery is going, so Moonlight sends Furze to escort the medicine cat to Sunrise's den. A while later, after her mother's kitting, she is seen standing, hackles high beside Furze, Creek, and Flurry, guarding Moonlight's den from the entering battle-ready Clan cats. When the Sisters face them, Flurry argues that the warriors nearly killed Sunrise, who intervenes and states that the group can handle bullies, and the clearing explodes into battle when she launches herself at Harestar, locking in combat. When the battle is over, she is mentioned by one of the Sisters when they say Sunrise and Moonlight's kits owe their lives to Squirrelflight for defending them while risking her Clan's trust.

Tree's Roots[]

"You'd better get the land back on your side before you go on your wander! What if you fall asleep in a mud puddle and it just swallows you up?"
―Sunrise teasing Earth Tree's Roots, chapter 2
Sunrise is a kit of the Sisters along with her siblings, Ice and Earth. When Earth is done trying to talk to the land, Sunrise bombards him with questions. Earth suspiciously answers them, causing Ice to realize that Earth didn't talk to the earth. Ice and Sunrise tease Earth how his talking to the land practice went with Stream, but Stream tells the two she-cats it's difficult to get it right. After Ice asks her brother if he did anything to offend the land, Sunrise teases him a little bit before Earth goes off to pick something from the prey-hole, ultimately realizing that Chestnut and Snail get the first pick after Sunrise tells her brother that it's their wander tonight. That night, a storm hits. Stream ventures off, while the rest of the kits stay in the place Moonlight assigned them to. Earth follows Stream, despite hearing Sunrise's warnings. At Haze's ceremony, Sunrise spots Haze, and converses with her. She is rather sad when Haze's ghost leaves, finding comfort in her mother, Moonlight. Later on, Earth is being bid farewell on the beginning of his wander, and asks Sunrise to say goodbye to Ice for him, because she was sick. She says she doesn't want him to leave, but he repeats what he said before bidding good-bye to all the Sisters.

Relationships[]

Ice, Tree, and Moonlight[]

Narrator: "Sunrise ran to Moonlight and pressed her face against her mother's fur."
Sunrise: "She's gone!"
Narrator: "Earth watched, feeling cold and empty, as Moonlight comforted his littermate."
—Sunrise finding comfort in Moonlight Tree's Roots, chapter 2
Sunrise is close to her two siblings, particularly Ice, as Earth is a tom, destined to leave on his wander. She teases Earth a bit along with Ice after Earth's unsuccessful attempts at communicating with the earth.[10] When a storm hits, Earth runs after Stream. Sunrise tries to warn him, reminding him that Moonlight had told them to stay put.[11] She is very sorrowful when Earth has to leave, but all Earth says is to tell Ice goodbye.[12] Moons later, the pair meet again. Sunrise greets her brother, but looks guiltily at her paws as Earth, now Tree, condemns his mother for abandoning him.
She is also close with Moonlight, and as a kit, she honored her mother's word, and also found comfort in Moonlight.[11]

Squirrelflight[]

Bramblestar: "No!"
Narrator: "Was Bramblestar going to fight her sister to stop her from treating a wounded cat?"
Squirrelflight: "Let her go."
Bramblestar: "We can't keep doing this. If you keep undermining my authority, you could destroy our whole Clan."
Squirrelflight: "I have to do what I think is right."
Bramblestar: "Even if it costs you your Clan?"
Squirrelflight: "ThunderClan is stronger than that. At least, I hope it is. If our future depends on letting a cat die, then it's not the Clan I thought it was."
Bramblestar: "Why are you doing this to me? You're my deputy. You're my mate. You're supposed to support me."
Squirrelflight: "Being a good deputy doesn't mean blindly following orders. It means standing up for what I believe in, and this time, I believe I'm right."
—Squirrelflight defending Leafpool's decision to treat Sunrise Squirrelflight's Hope, chapter 9
Sunrise and the other Sisters befriended Squirrelflight when the latter stood up for the group when ShadowClan, WindClan, and ThunderClan itself tried to drive them out.[13] When Sunrise was severely injured by Strikestone, Bramblestar refused to treat her, but Squirrelflight managed to urge the ThunderClan leader not to let Sunrise die,[14][15] and this made the Sisters' friendship with Squirrelflight grow stronger, especially when the Clans attacked their temporary camp while Moonlight was kitting.[16]
Afterward, when Bramblestar disappears as a spirit, the Sisters are convinced to help the Clans and Squirrelflight to find her mate, considering how much Squirrelflight did for them while they were still residing in Clan territory, but Sunrise is against it at first, recalling her injuries and Bramblestar's hesitation to treat them. After the ceremony, Squirrelflight tries to persuade Sunrise to try to find Bramblestar one more time, but Sunrise reassures her that the Sisters will be near.[17][18][19]

Rootspring[]

Sunrise: "You don't need us to summon them. You have the gift."
Rootspring: "I don't think I can manage so many spirits alone."
Sunrise: "Of course you can. The power is in you. You just need to learn to strengthen it."
Rootspring: "How do I strengthen a power I don't understand?"
Sunrise: "Until now, spirits have found you, right?"
Rootpspring: "Right. Well, I've summoned Bramblestar on purpose, but that was...hard."
Sunrise: "Okay. If you need to reach out to a spirit, it helps to have something of theirs. A piece of fur, or bedding they've slept in."
Rootspring: "How?"
Sunrise: "Lie down like this. So the earth can feel your heartbeat. Do it every day so it can get to know you. Each time you do, your connection will deepen."
—Sunrise guiding her kin, Rootspring Darkness Within, pages 267-268
She first encounters the pair when the patrol is hunting close to the Sisters' camp. She is initially suspicious because of this, but after finding out that their patrol had found Leaf, she lets them into Sisters' camp.[6] Rootspring learns that Sunrise is Tree's littermate, which deepens their relationship.[20] Sunrise's gaze warms when she sees Rootspring and Bristlefrost show affection to each other, and is fond of the fact that Rootspring had found someone who loved him.[21] After the ceremony to find the ghosts, Sunrise compliments Rootspring's performance. She teaches and guides him on how to strengthen the gift he had received from Tree and the Sisters, and jokingly adds that he should not give up on Bristlefrost. More seriously, she tells him that the two love each other and should not give up.[22]
