"Fear froze Hollyleaf's paws to the ground harder than the ice had trapped her tongue. She couldn't move. It was too easy to imagine the dogs' teeth ripping into her pelt, her blood streaming out..." |

Chapter description[]
- Hollyleaf shifts in her makeshift nest, and notices that Lionblaze is twitching, wondering how kittypets or even he managed to sleep in the noisy Twolegplace, with all the scents and sounds. Just then, the golden tabby tom emerges from his nest, so Hollyleaf follows him. Sunlight shows as Brambleclaw and the other cats stand watching.
- Brambleclaw announces that they need to find the cat who they met the previous night, but Hazeltail and Birchfall are skeptical of the cats who live in the Twolegplace, while Hollyleaf tells Lionblaze that she was sure that Sol had scared the black-and-white cat into being scared of the patrol. Afterward, the weather begins to change, and she complains that she is really thirsty. Brambleclaw leads the patrol onward as Hollyleaf drinks from a puddle of icy water, but when she tries to get up, she realizes her tongue is frozen. Lionblaze is amused, and Birchfall kneels down until they are nose to nose, and Hollyleaf is irritated when she sees amusement in the senior warrior's eyes. Brackenfur intervenes, suggesting to break the ice to free Hollyleaf's tongue, but he is also trying not to laugh. She tries again but fails as it begins to hurt more, realizing that she probably did seem funny in her position. When Brambleclaw suggests breathing on the ice to make it melt, Hollyleaf attempts this, while the patrol leader makes a comment that she disagrees with. She eventually gets her tongue free and spins around to see a line of huge, vicious dogs. The patrol is tense, and Hollyleaf begins to back away paw step by paw step as Brambleclaw had ordered. Unfortunately, another line of dogs were blocking their escape. Birchfall mutters something under his breath, and the first line of dogs lunge for the cats, so Brambleclaw runs, ordering every cat to do so as well.
- He dashed forward, in between two Twoleg nests as the rest of the patrol follows. Lionblaze looks hostile, and Hollyleaf realizes that he wants to fight the dogs. Brambleclaw then squeezes into a gap at the hedge, ordering the cats to go through. Shoving Birchfall, Hazeltail and Hollyleaf, then Lionblaze through, he is about to suggest something when the dogs leap effortlessly over the fence with excited yelps toward the patrol. Hollyleaf is terrified, but suddenly a Twoleg throws open the door of the twoleg nest and shakes a stick at the dogs. During the pandemonium, the patrol runs for a fence bordering the Twolegplace and start to climb it when Hazeltail slips on the wood, leaving blood smeared on it. The dogs scrabble at the wood, trying to get at the cats, but Brambleclaw taunts them. Suddenly the dogs began to follow a black-and-white dog back towards the cats, and Birchfall gasps. Brambleclaw orders the cats to follow him into another gap, though this one led to a dead end, and Hollyleaf realizes Hazeltail would never make it up, or anyone.
- Hazeltail tells them to go on, but Brackenfur tells her that they can't go anywhere regardless. Hollyleaf urgently suggest they hide, so Brambleclaw stuffs the cats into hiding, and beside her, Hollyleaf feels Hazletail trembling while Birchfall remarks that he'll probably never see Whitewing again. Lionblaze pushes his way out of hiding, wanting to fight the dogs. Hollyleaf tells him that he wouldn't be able to pull it off, but Lionblaze ignores the comment and pushes past, ignoring Brambleclaw as Hollyleaf screeches his name.
