The patrol whips around to see Sol in an arched opening. Tension is thick within the group, but Hollyleaf relaxes as she looks into the tom's eyes and wonders how it was possible she forgot how calm and wise he was. Brambleclaw approaches, giving a greeting and tells Sol he needs to return to ThunderClan with them. The loner pieces together that a cat has died, and they believe him to be responsible, and Hazeltail whispers to Hollyleaf that he must be guilty. An old frail voice sounds, and Purdy appears with a rabbit, Hollyleaf noting he looks thinner and messier than the last time they had seen him.
The old tom is surprised and pleased to see the Clan cats again, and he wonders if Hollyleaf and Lionblaze have been behaving themselves. Hollyleaf feels she should be offended he still saw them as troublemaking apprentices but instead longs for those days again when things had been simpler. Brambleclaw introduces Purdy to Hazeltail, Birchfall, and Brackenfur, and Sol apologizes to the old cat and announces he must go. Purdy is caught off guard and wishes for him and the ThunderClan cats to stay a little longer, and Brambleclaw decides they will stay for the night. Hollyleaf offers the mouse she caught to Purdy, who is grateful for it, and the Clan patrol leaves the nest for a hunt. Brackenfur is uncertain about leaving Sol alone, and Brambleclaw tells him to stand guard out of sight.
Hollyleaf admits to Hazeltail that she feels bad about taking Sol from Purdy, but Hazeltail protests that he is a murderer and they need to get him back to ThunderClan before he causes more trouble. Hollyleaf wonders what would happen with the search of Ashfur's killer if he didn't return with them, growing uncomfortable at the thought of accusations within her own Clan being a possibility. The next morning, they prepare to leave, and Purdy insists they eat before heading out, then warns them to be careful of monsters and dogs. Hollyleaf wishes there was something they could do for Purdy, and as they say goodbye, she can see the loneliness in his eyes as he pretends to be cheerful. As they are making their way out, Brambleclaw turns around and asks Purdy to come with them to ThunderClan. At first, Purdy is hesitant and declines, but Brambleclaw convinces him to come at least to the edge of Twolegplace.
They cross a Thunderpath, and Purdy lags behind with Brackenfur urging him on. A monster approaches, and the warrior shoves Purdy to safety, leaving the old tom complaining there were no problems and young cats are always panicking. As they continue traveling, they come across a group of Twoleg kits beyond a fence, and Purdy sticks his head through to let them pet him, leaving the patrol exasperated as they wait. Eventually, the Twoleg nests disappear and woodland replaces them. Hazeltail climbs up a tree to check their direction, and confirms they're heading the right way. Birchfall and Brackenfur walk on each side of Sol, who tells them they don't need to guard him. Purdy is puzzled, and Sol explains ThunderClan thinks he's done something bad, and Purdy defends him, but no cat responds. As they continue, Hollyleaf notices Purdy is growing tired, and Brambleclaw reluctantly decides they will stop soon. In the meantime, Hollyleaf offers to let him lean against her, but Purdy is too proud and declines. They stop in a small clearing to rest and hunt, and Hollyleaf brings Purdy a mouse and wonders how long it has been since he had a decent meal. She and Hazeltail curl up beside him to keep the elder warm for the night.
Hollyleaf wakes before everyone else in the morning to find Sol not among them. She finds him upon a rock beside a small stream nearby, watching the remaining stars fade in the sky. He asks her if she still believes they hold all the answers, and Hollyleaf responds she's not sure and doesn't know anything anymore. Sol questions her, and she explains things were easier when she could trust what others said, and he tells her she needs to learn to trust herself, only she knows what is right. Hollyleaf isn't sure why she is telling her doubts to anyone, and says she often feels confused and doesn't want to decide everything on her own. Sol assures her that it gets easier, then begins to return to the group. As she follows him, Hollyleaf wonders why she feels she can trust him with her life, even after everything he has done.
The group moves on, reaching the edge of the forest where fields spread out ahead of them, and Purdy is suspicious of the sheep that move about. He is frightened of the open space and lack of trees and Twolegs, and Hollyleaf grows irritated with him, but apologizes after Lionblaze tells her to take it easy. They soon take a break, and Hazeltail and Birchfall collect sheep fluff from the bushes, and Hollyleaf hunts to gather mouse bile to take care of Purdy's fleas and ticks. They continue as dusk approaches and the smell of the horseplace reaches them. Hollyleaf is eager to get back to the familiarity of her camp, but feels there is no safety there, or anywhere, and sadly wonders where all the lies and betrayal will end.
