Chapter description[]
- Whitewing thanks Jayfeather for the herbs that he gives her, and Jayfeather adds that she must eat it all, as her kits are coming soon. Whitewing acknowledges this, and openly hopes that it isn't much more longer, as she feels huge. Jayfeather reassures her, and they part ways. Jayfeather mutters to himself, hoping that Leafpool is still out of camp. Irritation floods him as he senses another cat.
- Berrynose tells him that his tail smells funny, and Jayfeather smells it. The medicine cat reports that the tail is infected, and Berrynose admits that it got stuck on brambles. Jayfeather applies the poultice, and the two cats part ways. Jayfeather goes into his den, and takes a few leaves of chervil, dandelion, and borage. He goes to the elders den, and after putting the herbs in front of Mousefur, he asks if any of them is the herb. Mousefur and Longtail tell him that those aren't the herbs, and he returns to his den, planning on getting more herbs.
- As he puts the herbs back, Leafpool enters the den. Jayfeather makes up the excuse that he got herb dust on his pelt, and Leafpool asks him to organize the yarrow while she checks Millie's breathing. Later, Jayfeather brings daisy leaves for Mousefur, but the cranky elder says that it is not the herb.
- While Jayfeather eats his vole, he hears Firestar talking to Leafpool. Firestar asks Leafpool if she had heard from StarClan, but Leafpool snaps that she had not. This causes Jayfeather to wonder why Leafpool didn't want to talk to StarClan. Sandstorm halts beside Jayfeather, and asks him if he wants to go for a walk. Jayfeather agrees, and after getting Leafpool's permission, the cats go on their walk.
- Sandstorm asks Jayfeather if Leafpool seems a bit tense, and Jayfeather agrees. Sandstorm brings up the point that Leafpool might be blaming herself for Ashfur's death, but Jayfeather disagrees. Sandstorm thinks that Leafpool might think that she should be able to talk to Ashfur, and Jayfeather realizes that Firestar hadn't told her that he asked Leafpool about that. Jayfeather suggests that she might be tense because of the greencough, and Whitewing's kits being born in a leaf-bare so cold. Sandstorm agrees, and Jayfeather lies that he will keep her updated.
- Jayfeather hears Daisy putting her kits to sleep, and notes that Leafpool is still being touchy. His thoughts are interrupted by Cloudtail yowling that Brambleclaw is back. The Clan notices Sol, and they wonder how Firestar is going to handle the situation. Firestar coolly greets Sol, and asks Berrynose and Honeyfern to make his bedding. Firestar congratulates Brambleclaw's patrol, and Purdy interrupts, asking Firestar why Sol was being brought there. Firestar assures him that nothing wil happen to Sol, and asks Foxpaw to lead Purdy to the elders' den while Leafpool checks Sol over. Firestar quietly asks Spiderleg to have the first shift guarding Sol. Jayfeather pads over to Lionblaze and Hollyleaf, and the three reminisce about the journey.
