Chapter description[]

Hollyleaf follows her brothers back to camp, frustrated that she had been so close to learning who her father was, but Sol had found amusement in withholding the information. She is distracted by her anger, paying no mind to where she is going, when Jayfeather pushes her aside, and Lionblaze hisses ShadowClan are coming, and the three hide in a bramble. They wait as Ivytail, Smokefoot, and Owlpaw pass and their scents die away. On their way back, Hollyleaf and Lionblaze to pretend they had been gathering prey while they were out. As she stalks a squirrel, Hollyleaf thinks they should not have to lie and deceive, and imagines how she could get Sol to tell them who their father is, remembering herself killing Ashfur. She scares the squirrel away as she makes too much noise being distracted, but manages to catch a mouse.
As she approaches the fresh-kill pile, she overhears a group of warriors discussing how they believe Sol is still around, when Dustpelt interrupts, informing the Clan that the mouse they had stuffed with deathberries to kill the snake with has still not been touched. Squirrelflight and Leafpool pad up to the three littermates, saying they need to talk, and the Hollyleaf worries Leafpool is going to tell everyone what she did, but the medicine cat gives a slight shake of her head. The two sisters lead them out into the forest, and as they look at Hollyleaf, Lionblaze, and Jayfeather, Hollyleaf does not want to admit the look in their eyes is full of love for them. Squirrelflight tells them that Leafpool is their mother, but she loved them like her own kits, adding that they raised them together and surely that is what matters.
Hollyleaf does not give her brothers a chance to speak, angrily hissing they raised them to believe a lie, and they have nothing to say to them, then beckons Lionblaze and Jayfeather to follow, adding that mothers would love their kits enough to tell them the truth. As she stalks off, Lionblaze calls for her to wait, and she furiously urges them to follow her. Finally, her brothers join her, Lionblaze meows that they could at least talk and they might give them information they need, but Hollyleaf snaps there is no point in asking them, believing they would only get more lies in return.
Later, Hollyleaf tries focusing on her duties in the Clan, but struggles to put her feelings out of her mind. She wonders how she could be a good warrior when she is only a mistake that Leafpool had been ashamed to own up to, and wonders if her father may feel differently. She directs Foxpaw and Icepaw in making Whitewing a comfortable nest for when her kits arrive, and the queen comments that Hollyleaf will make a good mentor one day. The black warrior wonders how she could teach an apprentice the warrior code, knowing what she does. Rosekit cries out, rushing to the nursery, exclaiming ShadowClan is here. Hollyleaf pads out to see Russetfur, Ivytail, and Oakfur standing in the clearing, reporting to Firestar that three ThunderClan cats were seen outside of their territory the day before, and Ivytail points to Hollyleaf and her littermates.
Firestar reasons that they had a medicine cat with them and would not likely be involved in an invading patrol, and Jayfeather states they were looking to yarrow. The ShadowClan cats are skeptical, but do not argue and are escorted out of camp. After they leave, Firestar scolds them, and Brambleclaw confronts them, but is called away to join the evening patrol. He tells them to keep out of trouble. Hollyleaf tells her brothers they will need to see Sol again tomorrow. Lionblaze is wary, but Jayfeather agrees that this time he will have to talk, and if he does not, they will make him. He reminds Hollyleaf and Lionblaze that the prophecy belongs to them, not Sol.
