Chapter description[]
- Jayfeather hears Bumblekit stating that he is scared of Sol. Millie and Daisy comfort him, but while the kit is reassured, Jayfeather is not. He hears Mousefur state that whoever killed Ashfur has stuck their nose into a nest of bees. Jayfeather picks out Lionblaze's scent, and asks him if he's going to find Sol. Lionblaze confirms this, and Hollyleaf pads over.
- They argue over the prophecy. Leafpool calls Jayfeather over to help prepare herbs for the patrol. Jayfeather prepares a leaf wrap for Brambleclaw, and heads over to the deputy to give him his herbs. He finds Brambleclaw talking to Squirrelflight. He states that he wishes she could come, and says that he will protect her. When Squirrelflight just nods, Jayfeather notices that Squirrelflight's voice sounds broken. Jayfeather delivers the herbs to Brambleclaw, and Brambleclaw is pulled away by Graystripe. As Jayfeather is about to leave, Squirrelflight intercepts him, and asks him to talk. Jayfeather abruptly retorts that they have nothing to talk about, and takes his leave. On his way to the medicine den, his muzzle gets caught on thorns, and Leafpool helps him escape. She asks if he would like cobwebs, but he declines, wondering why she always had to be there.
- After delivering all the traveling herbs, he settles down and eats prey. While eating, he overhears Berrynose conversing with Dustpelt about who killed Ashfur, and notes to himself that he is sick with cats talking about it. As he takes tansy to Millie and Briarkit, he overhears Cloudtail and Brightheart comforting Daisy about ThunderClan bringing back Sol to their camp. He goes into the nursery, hearing Rosekit and Blossomkit playing, while Millie scolds them. Jayfeather notes that Ashfur was never important when he was alive.
- As he passes Sandstorm, Firestar, Graystripe, and Brackenfur, he overhears the three senior warriors giving the ThunderClan leader advice on what to do. He comes across his littermates, and the three say farewell. Jayfeather dreams. He meets Midnight, and Midnight tells him that Sol is not the killer. The badger adds that Jayfeather knows this. Midnight tells him that the truth must come out, or otherwise ThunderClan would fall apart. Jayfeather wakes up, and sees Leafpool. Leafpool asks him if he wants to say bye to the others. Jayfeather goes out of the den, and sees Whitewing, Birchfall, Squirrelflight, and Brambleclaw say their farewells. Firestar wishes them goodbye, and tells them that they will find out the truth.
