"[Squirrelflight's] not my mother. The words almost forced themselves out of [Lionblaze's] jaws, but he bit them back. If Brambleclaw didn't know, this wasn't the place to tell him."

Chapter description[]

It is cold and windy as Lionblaze follows Brambleclaw and his patrol to find Sol. The patrol passes through a narrow gully in the sun-drown-place, which is where Midnight lives. Birchfall slips on the way down the cliffs, hitting Hazeltail, who topples down; Brackenfur saves them. Lionblaze watches the waves hit the shore, and they are much larger than those of the lake. He and Hollyleaf are both uncomfortable near the sun-drown-place.
The patrol follows as Brambleclaw jumps onto an outcrop and into a cave, and the deputy explains that it is where he fell and Lionblaze's mother, Squirrelflight, saved him—silently, Lionblaze thinks about how Squirrelflight is not his real mother. However, the patrol finds that Midnight the badger is not there, and nor is Sol. They leave the cave as they observe that the water has risen farther up the shore. Brambleclaw tells the cats to go back, and Lionblaze staggers as water sprays him. A wave crashes over Birchfall while he leaps up to the gully, and he and Hollyleaf are afraid and desperately try to find a way to save the warrior. However, Brambleclaw swims over to rescue him from drowning, and Lionblaze tells Hollyleaf and Hazeltail to clench a branch between their teeth for the two cats to hold on to. The waves are strong, and sun is setting; Birchfall manages to grab on, but Brambleclaw does not. Lionblaze is horrified, but he then sees the deputy struggling to swim, and with an effort, he hauls himself onshore.
The patrol continues moving, and Birchfall thanks Brambleclaw and Brackenfur for saving him. Brackenfur asks the deputy what they should do next, and the patrol decides to search the Twolegplace next for Midnight following her absence in the sun-drown-place. As they move toward the Twolegplace, Lionblaze wonders if his adoptive father would be as eager to investigate Ashfur's murder if he knew what Ashfur did to Squirrelflight, but he also does not know that she lied to him. He tries to shake away the thoughts, and as they continue, a bat swoops next to Lionblaze. Brambleclaw thinks that they should search the outskirts of the Twolegplace, and when they get to the Thunderpath, a monster charges straight at the patrol. They leap out of its way just in time. Hazeltail accidentally knocks over a shiny Twoleg thing smelling of crow-food that is covered with gross, slimy scraps. While Hollyleaf, Brambleclaw, and Lionblaze help clean up Hazeltail, Birchfall crosses the Thunderpath and finds some Twoleg food; they reluctantly eat it.
They spot a small cat who stares at the patrol in horror. Brambleclaw tries to assure the cat by saying that they are not going to harm them, but the cat states that someone told them that last time, and flees. The patrol thinks that the one the small cat was referring to might be Sol. They settle into a makeshift den outside the Twolegplace and Lionblaze drifts into sleep.
