Chapter description[]
- Jayfeather wakes up, asking for more bedding in his den. He spots Leafpool preparing herbs for Mousefur, so he asks the she-cat if he can take them to Mousefur. Leafpool turns around, surprised, stating that she was frightened, and then more calmly adds that the blind medicine cat should go to the ursery for fleas. He enters the nursery, and searches Millie for fleas. Millie thanks him, commenting that she was certain she had some. While searching Briarkit for fleas, Jayfeather states that Millie needs more bedding, adding that he will ask the apprentices to get it done.
- As he goes to check Blossomkit, Toadkit jumps onto his tail. After scolding the tomkit, the tabby tom continues searching through Blossomkit's pelt, pulling out the occasional flea. He does the same to Bumblekit, but not before Toadkit pesters him with questions about medicine cats and their duties. Jayfeather sharply snaps at him again, causing Daisy to get irritated. He leaves after everyone is checked, wishing for Hollyleaf and Lionblaze to return. As he exits the den, he notices that Firestar is near. The fiery-ginger tom greets him, and upon sensing that something is wrong, the leader states that the blind tabby tom can tell him anything. Jayfeather thinks that his leader wouldn't want to know about his findings concerning Squirrelflight, and just nods, before Firestar leaves.
- Later on, Leafpool takes him out for medicine cat battle training, despite his complaints. Leafpool begins, stating that they would practice defensive moves first. While Jayfeather is complaining, Leafpool sneaks a blow in. Jayfeather protests, stating that he wasn't prepared for the attack. Leafpool reprimands him that a ShadowClan warrior wouldn't wait for him to prepare himself. The tabby she-cat repeats the process, but Jayfeather is prepared better this time. He defends himself, but only barely gets a touch of his mentor's fur. They repeat again. Jayfeather begins to feel tired, wishing to curl up for a nap. Leafpool declares that she knows what his problem is. She explains that Jayfeather expects his siblings to stick up for him, but they aren't there now. Jayfeather doesn't respond, but wonders what Leafpool's reaction would be when she hears what her sister had done to the trio.
- Returning to camp, Jayfeather heads for the medicine den and begins to rest. He dreams, and dreams of a forest. He calls out names, calling for Bluestar, and Yellowfang. He asks why they won't appear to him, and Spottedleaf appears. She tells him that he will not receive the answers he wants there, and he must return to his Clan. Jayfeather asks if StarClan knew all along that Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight weren't his parents, but Spottedleaf retorts that StarClan does not know all. Jayfeather comes to the grim conclusion that he is alone, once again.
