Chapter description[]

Brambleclaw spots Ashfur limping away from Leafpool's den towards the warriors' den. As the gray warrior does, he is approached by Birchpaw, asking to go on patrol with Brackenfur and Whitepaw. His mentor tells him ill-temperedly, that Leafpool has confined him to camp due to his injury. The apprentice watches his peers leave mournfully, but perks up when Brambleclaw offers to take him out instead. Before Ashfur is able to respond to the offer, Firestar states that it is a good idea so that Birchpaw doesn't miss anymore training. With a quick warning from the flame-colored tom, Brambleclaw and Birchpaw head off, joined by Sandstorm and Thornclaw. The patrol leaves camp, noting the overcast weather, making hunting a little more difficult. Brambleclaw sends Birchpaw ahead to find the ShadowClan border. The young tom eagerly rushes off, earning a comment from Sandstorm who mentions his pent up energy. Thornclaw suggests the idea of Brambleclaw finishing up the young tom's training while Ashfur recovers. The suggestion doesn't miss the dark tabby, but he hopes instead to become Berrykit's mentor when the time comes.
The patrol catches up with Birchpaw, who has found the scent markers. However, Brambleclaw is confused as they were nowhere near the boundary line. He questions Ashfur's mentoring, but both Sandstorm and Thornclaw confirm that the markers are fresh. The dark tabby decides they need to confront the ShadowClan patrol. He sends Birchpaw back to camp to alert Firestar, the apprentice leaving without question. Brambleclaw then takes the lead as they catch up to the enemy Clan, soon finding Russetfur and her patrol in a hollow. He calls to her, confront the she-cat's presence and she passes him off. Brambleclaw reminds her that the Clans had settled their boundaries beforehand. Cedarheart states that was then as Russetfur notes that ShadowClan needs the space and that ThunderClan is too weak to defend their border regardless. The deputy mentions the previous badger attack, making Sandstorm question her. But, Russetfur disregards her as she affirms her point about ThunderClan's weakness. Brambleclaw wonders how she had gained such knowledge of ThunderClan's status, but he then recalls that Leafpool had visited the Moonpool. He realizes that she must have revealed ThunderClan's weakness to Littlecloud. Without hesitation, Brambleclaw tells the ShadowClan patrol to leave, or they'll fight. Russetfur refuses and the two patrols engage in a fight.
The ThunderClan cats are overwhelmed by the ShadowClan cats and Brambleclaw silently prays for Birchpaw to be quicker. As he tussles with Cedarheart, a second ThunderClan patrol, led by Firestar, arrive and drive off the invading ShadowClan cats. Russetfur snarls and spits at Firestar as the fight stops, stating that ShadowClan will set the new border. Firestar rises to her challenge, defending his Clan and their territory. The deputy and her patrol leave as the ThunderClan cats check for injuries amongst themselves. Brambleclaw checks over Squirrelflight as he sees his other Clanmates' injuries. Firestar tells him to see Leafpool, but Brambleclaw tells him that they need to set scent markers in case ShadowClan try again. The dark tabby and Squirrelflight do so before returning to camp with the others. Back at camp, the flame-colored leader announces to the rest of ThunderClan what had happened and that future patrols should look out for any traces of ShadowClan. As the meeting finishes up, Brambleclaw asks his leader if he may speak and once given permission, asks Leafpool if she had told Littlecloud about the badger attack. The tabby medicine cat states that she did, causing Brambleclaw to argue that the border incident would not have happened if she hadn't spoken about it. Leafpool defends herself, stating that Littlecloud had a right to know of Cinderpelt's death, but Brambleclaw tells her to decide where her loyalties lie. Squirrelflight stops the two from further bickering, stating that it is Blackstar's fault, not Littlecloud's, for instigating a fight over the border. Brambleclaw apologizes as Firestar states that Squirrelflight is right and that at the next Gathering, he will take it up with the rival leader and make it clear that ThunderClan will be ready for any future fight.
