"Stormfur, you attacked your Clanmate! It's obvious you have forgotten the warrior code, or else it doesn't mean anything to you anymore. You will have to leave RiverClan. There is no place for you here. Your path lies with the Tribe now."

Chapter description[]

The day following Daisy and her kits returning to ThunderClan, Brambleclaw exits the warriors' den to see Berrykit play fighting with his brother, Mousekit. Brambleclaw compliments both the young kit's skills and leaves them to it as he spots Firestar in the clearing speaking with a returned patrol. As the tabby approaches, the patrol is dismissed and Firestar tells him that Dustpelt had reported Twoleg activity on their border. Both Brambleclaw and Firestar share their concerns about the issue, but the leader explains he wants a peaceful resolution to the possible issue of ShadowClan wanting more territory because of the Twolegs. Firestar asks Brambleclaw to investigate what exactly the impact of the Twolegs is in the ThunderClan clearing, and the ShadowClan and RiverClan borders. The tom explains that by fully understanding the situation, he'll know the full extent so that when Blackstar and Leopardstar demand more territory at the next Gathering, ThunderClan will be prepared. Brambleclaw nods in understanding, knowing that as the weather became warmer more Twolegs would appear with their strange monsters on the lake as well. He asks if leader if he thinks the Twolegs will invade ThunderClan, at first, Firestar thinks they might but reasons the forest may be too far from the water for them. With that, he sends Brambleclaw on his task to investigate the issue at hand.
Brambleclaw sets off to his task, thinking that his father was right that Firestar had a good deal of trust in him. He cuts through ThunderClan territory and comes to the clearing that Firestar had mentioned. He notices it full of green pelts and that instead of being on ThunderClan's side of the border, they are on ShadowClan's side. The tabby notes that Blackstar may see this as a reason to extend his territory, thinking the Twolegs are invading his territory. Brambleclaw continues to look around, noting that some of Dustpelt's observations about the Twolegs are right. He heads towards the lake, travelling along the ThunderClan and ShadowClan border markers, attempting his best to not cross to not anger Blackstar. At the shore, Brambleclaw spots more Twolegs and their boats on the water, noticing more as he draws closer to the RiverClan border. He casts an uneasy glance towards the tree line and wonders if because of Twolegs and their noise if ShadowClan were hidden further back in the pine forest. The tom keeps himself on edge in case a patrol appears and as his investigation continues, he understands that Blackstar is using the Twolegs as an excuse for his plans.
Brambleclaw cuts across towards a Thunderpath where a dog leaps from a monster towards him. He stiffens, but a Twoleg grabs the animal before it makes it close enough to him and Brambleclaw sneers at it. Continuing to observe the activity of the Twolegs, but watches as Brook hunts and accidently chases a squirrel onto the Thunderpath. Behind her, Stormfur calls after her and tries to warn her and watches as Brook narrowly avoids being hit by a monster. Behind the two warriors, Hawkfrost appears and accuses Brook of stealing prey from ShadowClan. Stormfur attempts to defend his mate, but Hawkfrost has none of it and continues to berate the former Tribe cat for her actions. The three return to RiverClan camp, and Brambleclaw decides to follow to see what would happen to his friends. He manages to hide downwind from them, but remains alert in case any other RiverClan warriors were close by.
The tabby notices the Clan gather as Leopardstar and Mistyfoot sit in the center of camp in front of Stormfur, Brook, and Hawkfrost. Hawkfrost explains to his leader and deputy what had happened, making an offhanded comment about the monster missing Brook. Leopardstar reigns the tabby in, but asks Brook to explain herself. The she-cat does so as she apologizes as well, but Hawkfrost once again cuts in. Blackclaw, a warrior, speaks up saying Brook should return to the Tribe. But, Stormfur states that if his mate leaves, he will too, which upsets Mistyfoot as she tells him to reconsider what he is thinking. Ultimately, Hawkfrost reminds Leopardstar of Mothwing's earlier dream. However, Mothwing hesitates to speak about until goaded on by her brother. Brambleclaw watches in disbelief as RiverClan turns on the two cats and Stormfur, in fury, attacks Hawkfrost. The ThunderClan tom watches as his brother doesn't fight back, at first he wonders why, but then he figures it out. Stormfur is pulled off of the other warrior as Leopardstar sadly makes the decision to exile the gray tom and his mate.
Brambleclaw takes his leave as well, as he knows he wants to speak with Stormfur instead of worrying about Firestar's mission. The tabby manages to catch up to the pair not far from the Gathering island. Stormfur whips around with his fur bristling, but calms down when he notices it's Brambleclaw and not Hawkfrost. Brook tries to comfort her mate as Brambleclaw and Stormfur talk. The ThunderClan tom tells him that he had seen what had happened and offers him a place in ThunderClan. The gray tom is shocked at first and explains if they did it would only cause trouble with RiverClan for them. However, Brambleclaw reminds him that Firestar doesn't care what the other Clans think of his decisions and with that in mind, both Stormfur and Brook take the offer. The three cats return to ThunderClan territory through WindClan's side of the lake to avoid being caught by RiverClan patrols. As they walk back, Brambleclaw points out that Stormfur shouldn't have attacked Hawkfrost, but the gray tom points out he was goaded into that fight. He also warns his old friend that the path he is treading may only lead to trouble and to be careful with what he does. Brambleclaw feels guilty, knowing that there was no way Stormfur knew about his nightly training sessions with Hawkfrost and their father. But, he wonders if Stormfur knew he was closer with Hawkfrost than what some might think.
