"I wanted to be a medicine cat so much! And at first I tried to believe in StarClan, I really did. When Mudfur took me to the Moonstone I thought I had a dream where I met some cats from StarClan, and they showed me things that were happening in the forest. Then when I got back to RiverClan, Hawkfrost told me what he'd done with the moth's wing. And I realized that StarClan must be just a story and that everything I had seen was only an ordinary dream. Because if StarClan really existed, they wouldn't let him do such a wicked thing or torment me like this!"

Leafpool sets out for the meeting at the Moonpool. She recounts that Brambleclaw's first day as ThunderClan'sdeputy went well, but she fears his father's influence over him. Leaving the thick cover of ThunderClan territory, she catches up to Barkface, Mothwing, and Willowpaw, of whom the latter she is excited to see. Leafpool greets them all politely, and is grateful the apprentice doesn't mention their dream with Mudfur. She asks where Littlecloud is and Barkface suggests he may have gone ahead. The four cats decide to make a move as the moon continues to rise. The ThunderClan medicine cat notices Mothwing is tense and understands it's due to her presenting Willowpaw to StarClan, despite not believing in them herself. Leafpool comforts her own thoughts recalling that Feathertail had promised that the apprentice would share with their ancestors. Littlecloud catches up from behind the group, mentioning that one of his Clanmates had needed him just as he was leaving. He wishes Willowpaw all the best, and the five cats continue on their way.
They arrive at the Moonpool and Mothwing holds Willowpaw's apprentice ceremony. Leafpool watches intently, feeling her heart ache listening to her friend recite words that meant almost nothing to her due to her lack of faith. Willowpaw drinks from the Moonpool first, and the other medicine cats follow in suit. Leafpool finds herself in a forest clearing, scenting wind and stars around her. She looks to the sky and sees three stars that she'd seen twice before. She notices Willowpaw beside her and sees Spottedleaf, who she greets warmly. Leafpool asks her about the three stars, but the tortoiseshell tells her that she will come to understand their meaning another day. While disappointed with the answer, the tabby drops it and instead thanks the other cat for sharing Mothwing's secret. Leafpool asks if she should talk to her friend about and Spottedleaf tells her only if she wants to as Mothwing is simply a talented medicine cat no matter her faith. Hawkfrost is mentioned and the tortoiseshell explains his destiny is with StarClan and none of the ThunderClan cat's concern, explaining that StarClan is forever thankful for her aid with Willowpaw.
Leafpool thanks Spottedleaf for her compliments and explains she wishes she could see Cinderpelt, missing her mentor. Spottedleaf explains the dark gray she-cat is not angry with the tabby, and that she is closer than the other thinks. The former ThunderClan cat shows Leafpool, within the walls of ThunderClan's nursery, Sorreltail'skit, Cinderkit. In a single moment, Leafpool understands that the young kit is the reincarnation of Cinderpelt and is satisfied with what she has been shown. They return to Willowpaw, where Spottedleaf introduces herself to the young cat. Willowpaw asks Leafpool where Mothwing is but Spottedleaf answers that they won't share the same dream. The tortoiseshell shares a sign with Willowpaw as Leafpool watches, seeing storm clouds blot out the starry sky as a fierce wind picks up. From there, the pair wake up and Leafpool notices Mothwing staring at the water with a sad look. The tabby sympathizes for her friend as the golden cat asks after Willowpaw's welfare. Leafpool comforts her friend, stating she'd been there with the gray apprentice.
Mothwing tells her friend the truth about the sign her brother had faked for her to become a medicine cat. The golden cat asks Leafpool if she'll tell the others the truth, and if that would mean she'd have to stop being a medicine cat. Leafpool comforts her, telling her that she knew the truth already as Spottedleaf had shared a sign with her. Mothwing goes on to explain what Hawkfrost had done and how he threatens to tell the truth to the Clan if she doesn't follow his orders. The ThunderClan medicine cat offers her friend more comfort, explaining that StarClan could see she was meant to be a medicine cat and deserved her role. With those words, and Leafpool explaining how she will help Willowpaw share dreams with StarClan, Mothwing feels as though a weight is lifted off of her shoulders. The pair stop talking as Littlecloud and Barkface wake up, as well as Willowpaw. The apprentice share her hope of sharing a dream with Mothwing one day before asking Leafpool what the clouds had meant. The ThunderClan cat quietly explains that medicine cats don't usually speak of their signs until they are sure of what they mean. The pair keep the vision to themselves as the five cats leave the Moonpool. Leafpool watches as a shadow falls across the hollow and feels the same strong winds from the dream as she feels a sense of impending trouble. In her heart, she has a feeling that Hawkfrost has something to do with it.
Spottedleaf reveals to Leafpool that Cinderkit is Cinderpelt reincarnated.[3]
