Chapter description[]

Leafpool feels anxious all day after she treats Brambleclaw's wound and notices how tired he had been. She wonders if he had been training with Tigerstar again, feeling the terror of the Dark Forest. She feels her duty both as a sister and as ThunderClan's medicine cat to find the truth about the tabby's meetings with his father. She finds herself dreaming and is visited by three cats, who she is glad aren't Tigerstar. She is only able to recognize Bluestar, who invites her to join them. The other two cats introduce themselves as Yellowfang and Lionheart. Leafpool asks why they had brought her here and Bluestar ushers her to follow.
The four cats travel deeper into the forest. Above them, Leafpool notices three stars shining brighter than the rest. She asks Bluestar about them, but the former leader doesn't answer. The four of them come to a stop and the medicine cat asks if they have a sign for her. Bluestar states that they don't really, but explains that her destiny is full of many hidden twists and that she is to walk the same path few medicine cats had before her. Confused, Leafpool asks what she means. Bluestar remains ambiguous with her details but tells the tabby that she will meet three cats who will shape her future. Lionheart tells her that they had come to give her strength as Leafpool feels frustration bubble inside her. Bluestar reminds her that StarClan will always be with her as the tabby medicine cat continues to try and figure out the meaning behind her words. She reminds herself that she is ThunderClan's medicine cat and had given up her dreams of Crowfeather to be where she belongs. Bluestar tells her that StarClan isn't able to see everything and both Yellowfang and Lionheart offer her reassurance, telling her to rest. Leafpool thanks them as they fade away and she wakes up.
Sunlight filters into the medicine den and Leafpool notices Birchpaw outside of it. The young tom complains about being hungry. Leafpool quickly checks him over and gives him the okay to return to the apprentices' den. Excited, Birchpaw asks if he's allowed to start training, but she tells him that his mentor, Ashfur, is still recovering as well and it would be sometime before they do much. Birchpaw makes a promise to check on the tom as he leaves. Leafpool watches him go as she thinks about her previous dream. She feels comforted by it, but her worries turn back to Brambleclaw and his dream meetings. She figures that he is still loyal to ThunderClan, but she questions if cats could remain truly loyal under Tigerstar's influences.
Two nights later, Leafpool returns to camp with catmint from the abandoned Twoleg nest. She passes Spiderleg as she squeezes through the entrance and heads to the fresh-kill pile for a bite to eat. Grabbing a blackbird she settles down to eat, but Brambleclaw emerging from the warriors' den captures her attention. The tabby she-cat watches him leave camp and decides to follow him out of curiosity. On her way out, Spiderleg remarks about her late work and she lies half-heartedly that she is collecting herbs that are best gathered by moonlight. Out of camp, Leafpool tracks Brambleclaw as she notices that she had absent-mindedly headed towards the WindClan border. She returns to his scent trail, finding him atop a slope overlooking the lake. The she-cat hides from Brambleclaw's view and wonders if he is meeting with Hawkfrost. But, as the moon drifts across the sky, the RiverClan tom doesn't arrive and Brambleclaw remains still as he watches the water. As she watches, Leafpool wonders what is going through his mind, noting that it seemed as though he and the rest of ThunderClan thought their troubles were over.
As the night drags on, Leafpool becomes weary. She dozes off and finds Brambleclaw gone and the lake turned red as if it were full of blood. The words of her earlier prophecy come to mind as she tries to wake herself up. As she does, Leafpool trips and stumbles on a tree root. Brambleclaw calls out and finds her, questioning if she had been spying on him. The medicine cat tells him that she wasn't and had been herb collecting instead. The sight of his glare makes her uneasy and she hopes that he won't hurt her even though she knows the thought to be irrational. Leafpool gets to her paws and leaves calmly as the dawn light reflects in the lake's water. At that moment, she believes her vision to be much more real as she wonders what is to happen to ThunderClan.
