Chapter description[]

Tallpaw asks StarClan if they are watching him, heading for Outlook Rock. He hears rustling behind him and sees Sparrow, who asks if he's meant to be out here on his own, and Tallpaw tells him probably he's not. Sparrow asks if he can join him as he can't fall asleep, and Tallpaw asks if he likes being a rogue. Sparrow asks if that's what he is, and the black-and-white tom meows that's what Clans call cats that live outside of them. The brown tom meows then apparently he is a rogue, and the apprentice asks why is he here, and Sparrow repeats he couldn't fall asleep. Tallpaw asks why is he staying at WindClan, and the rogue replies his friends wanted to stay, so he followed them. He asks why Tallpaw is here, which confuses the apprentice. He asks if Sparrow meant the rock, meowing they share the same reason.
Sparrow asks if there is something stuck in his mind, and Tallpaw meows Sandgorse hates him as he doesn't want to be a tunneler which is against his father's wishes, and when the tunnel flooded Heatherstar forbade them from tunneling. Sandgorse blames his son for this, calling him a coward. Sparrow asks Tallpaw if he is, and when the black-and-white tom replies he's not, then Sparrow tells the apprentice Sandgorse is wrong about it. Tallpaw meows he was scared though, but his father wasn't, but Sparrow reassures him Sandgorse is an experienced tunneler, making Tallpaw consider being one too. Sparrow asks if he'd like to, and Tallpaw replies his father wants it, but he doesn't, but he believes his opinions are unimportant.
The brown rogue goes on, telling him he should care about himself instead of what Sandgorse wants, and Tallpaw thinks it's simple to say. Sparrow meows Sandgorse decides what he does, and asks why does he have the right to decide Tallpaw's destiny. The WindClan apprentice suddenly feels energized, thinking about Hawkheart's words, and decides he will do what he wants. Sparrow starts to leave, and Tallpaw asks if he's leaving, and the brown rogue replies he wants to hunt and give the elders a full pile of prey in the morning. The apprentice thanks him, and feels his heart soar freely.
Dawnstripe meows he's still not fully awake yet, and Tallpaw feels numb all over. Lilywhisker calls to Dawnstripe that Flailfoot's hungry which confuses Tallpaw, as Sparrow promised to stock up the pile. A moment later, the rogue walks in with a rabbit dangling from his jaws, and he carries it to Lilywhisker. Hickorynose, Sandgorse, Mistmouse, Plumclaw and Woollytail barge past, annoying Aspenfall. Tallpaw looks at his father, but the pale ginger tom gave him a look that shatters his heart. Dawnstripe recommends he mark the first border, and he realizes she saw his father's reaction, and he wonders why he can't have kin who are proud and supportive of him. Tallpaw reaches Fourtrees and manages to smell some scents, remembering the scent at a Gathering, realizing it's ThunderClan scent, and calls they are invading. When Aspenfall asks where, Tallpaw replies ThunderClan tried to invade, and he leaps forward. Dawnstripe tells him to come back, and he wonders why his mentor wasn't following him. However, he realizes the rest of the patrol was following closely behind, and they would fight with him, and Tallpaw leaps at the gray warrior.
