Chapter description[]
- Some cat's claws grabs Tallpaw's flanks, and he slams into the ground with Dawnstripe knocking over his legs. Dawnstripe tells him they were allowed to be there, and that they were going to the Mothermouth. Tallpaw is embarrassed, and apologizes to the ThunderClan warriors. Dawnstripe nods in approval, asking if Dappletail, Fuzzypaw and Robinpaw were going to share tongues with StarClan. Dappletail confirms this, and Dawnstripe apologizes to Windflight, as Tallpaw had probably alarmed the tom.
- Aspenfall meows to Dawnstripe she had stopped a fight, and Windflight praises Tallpaw for his speed. Stagleap tells them to check the borders and Tallpaw follows Stagleap, seeing Fourtrees. The black-and-white tom smells ShadowClan, and realizes they are very close to the border. Dawnstripe asks if Tallpaw has finished marking the borders, and Tallpaw replies he hasn't yet. Stagleap agrees that he also scented ShadowClan, and Tallpaw remarks that they were at the brambles, deep into WindClan territory. Aspenfall races up, and Stagleap tells him a large ShadowClan patrol crossed the border, heading towards camp. Tallpaw bolts after them, and Dawnstripe meows at Tallpaw to fetch the patrol near the RiverClan border, though Aspenfall offers to go and leaps away. Dawnstripe asks Tallpaw if he is ready.
- The apprentice replies that he is and they dash through the heather, seeing snarling cats, and Stonetooth at the center. Algernon, Bess and Reena were slashing at the intruders, while Hareflight and Shrewpaw were fighting a tom. Shrewpaw bites the tom's leg while Brackenwing knocks down a ShadowClan warrior. Sparrow and Redclaw were at the elders den, fighting ShadowClan cats. Tallpaw sees Ryestalk being attacked by Frogpaw and Newtpaw, and sees that her belly is exposed. Tallpaw pounces on the ShadowClan apprentice and Frogpaw slashes at Tallpaw's muzzle. Ryestalk digs deep into Newtpaw's flanks. Frogpaw pins Tallpaw down, and Ashpaw leaps onto him. Tallpaw realizes Mole is pulling Frogpaw off, and he breaks free, hurling at Ashpaw, seeing they are winning. Stonetooth states ShadowClan could hunt here as well, but Heatherstar insists they couldn't, telling him to leave. ShadowClan retreats, and Redclaw calls for Hawkheart, leaning over his mate Brackenwing. Hawkheart tells his apprentice to fetch some herbs, crouching beside Brackenwing, giving information about the injury. Shrewpaw meows for his mother to get up and tells her WindClan won, but the she-cat's chest grows still. Redclaw groans and calls her name, and Shrewpaw meows for his mother. Hareflight tells his apprentice that Brackenwing is dead, and Tallpaw is unable to believe the news.
