Chapter description[]

Tallpaw is awoken by Hawkheart heading towards the nursery, ready to assist in Meadowslip's kitting. A quarter moon had passed since Sandgorse died in the tunnel, making the kits well overdue. He dozes off again, thinking about how being stuck in camp has just made him more tired instead of feeling rested. As he wakes to cats milling about the camp, Palebird reports that Meadowslip has three kits: Hopkit, Pigeonkit, and Sorrelkit. Heatherstar purrs at this, happy that the Clan will soon have more warriors, though Plumclaw mentions that she hopes Hickorynose, the kits' father, will insist they become tunnelers. As his Clanmates chatter about the kits, Tallpaw bristles as Redclaw says that the visitors have brought them luck. Reena, excited about the kits, approaches Tallpaw, but his cold attitude turns the she-cat away, and she snaps at him to not talk to her until he's done feeling sorry for himself.
Angry, he pads away towards the camp entrance, joined by Flailfoot, who tries to talk to him. As they walk over the grassy slopes, Tallpaw suddenly feels the desire to run. Seeing how much he needs this, Flailfoot nudges him on, watching as Tallpaw races hard before returning. Tallpaw confides in the older cat, wishing Sandgorse had understood him more. Flailfoot tells him that if the accident hadn't happened, Sandgorse would've come around, reminding the young tom that his father loved him despite their differences. Tallpaw asks Flailfoot what his father was like, and the elder tells him about how his father hated worms, due to how they'd get stuck under his claws. Nearing the hollow, Tallpaw glances at Flailfoot, wishing he had heard these stories earlier.
Dawnstripe calls to Tallpaw as soon as he enters the camp and tells him that Hawkheart has cleared him for training. Expecting him to be excited, she is shocked when Tallpaw suddenly reveals that he wants to train as a tunneler instead, much to Woollytail and Plumclaw's delight. Woollytail stops him as Dawnstripe goes to speak to Heatherstar and asks Tallpaw to not do it for his father's sake. The young tom explains that tunneling was in his blood - he had just never realized it before.
