Barkpaw asks if Tallpaw is really going to become a tunneler as he and Tallpaw drink from the stream near camp. The black-and-white tom is surprised, having barely spoken to the medicine cat apprentice since Sandgorse had died. Barkpaw is curious as to why Tallpaw wants to become a tunneler since he has done well being a moor runner, figuring it is because of his father. As Tallpaw stalks away, Barkpaw calls after him, reminding him that becoming a tunneler will not bring Sandgorse back.
Heatherstar calls a Clan meeting, and Tallpaw's pelt bristles with excitement as he wonders who his new mentor will be, hopeful that it will be Woollytail, as the two tunnelers had been close friends. Dawnstripe looks at him with wide eyes, and the apprentice feels guilty, hoping she understands that he has to do this. The WindClanleader announces Meadowslip's new litter, before speaking about Tallpaw's request to train as a tunneler. Explaining that she has had doubts about tunneling for a long time, she announces that WindClan will stop tunneling, going on to explain that they have no need for them before rallying the Clan behind her. She tells the now former tunnelers that their new job will be to block all of the tunnels, insisting that she never wants to lose another cat to them.
Tallpaw, furious, asks if Sandgorse had died for nothing. Hickorynose attempts to calm him, explaining that he does not want his kits to die or be horrifically injured like Leafshine. Mistmouse and Cloudrunner offer their opinions on the matter, agreeing with Hickorynose, and the Clan begins to cheer. Palebird startles Tallpaw, telling him that she is glad he would not become a tunneler, saying that she could not bear to lose another cat that she loves. He stares at her for a moment, thinking he should be happy that she has told him she loves him, but instead he darts out of camp, planning to teach himself to tunnel. As he dives into one of them, Dawnstripe pulls him out, glaring at him as Hareflight and Shrewpaw join them. Shrewpaw continues to tease him, despite Dawnstripe snapping at him. Hareflight mentions that their Clanmates are worried about him, but Tallpaw spits back that no one is worried about him since he killed Brackenwing, upsetting Shrewpaw. The dark brown tom growls back that no one would miss Tallpaw, causing a fight between the two before the mentors pull them apart. Dawnstripe, shocked, dismisses Tallpaw to go collect bedding for the elders, and he stomps away into the rain.
