Chapter description[]

Dawnstripe leads the patrol into Mothermouth. Tallpaw, frightened of the dark cavern, stays close to his mentor, straining to see through the darkness. Trying to quell his anxiety, he reminds himself that he's following countless pawsteps, knowing that StarClan will keep them safe. Shrewpaw teases him, before Hareflight hisses at him to quiet down. Tallpaw begins to panic more, wondering if he'd be able to find his way out on his own, before the group enters the Moonstone cavern. As the Moonstone begins to shine, Dawnstripe tels the apprentices to touch their noses to the stone, and as Tallpaw lays down, he wonders who he'll see in his dreams.
Images flash through Tallpaw's dream, first of the visitors traveling through a rainstorm, then of a Twolegplace, a forest, and a river. Opening his eyes, he finds himself back at the Moonstone, disappointed and worried that StarClan hadn't shared anything with him. As Shrewpaw wakes, Hareflight quiets him, reminding him to not share the dreams they've had before exiting the cavern. As they begin their travel home, Dawnstripe asks Tallpaw if he's okay, but he brushes her off and tells her he's just tired. On the moor, he breaks into a sprint, with Hopkit and his siblings run to him to ask about the trip. He answers their questions tiredly, offering to bring them a lapwing and pluck the feathers. The kits run towards the fresh-kill pile, though Hopkit lags behind, and Tallpaw pulls him onto his shoulders for a ride.
Tallpaw begins his warrior assessment shortly after returning. He easily passes the first part of his assessment - watching the territory for threats from the Outlook Rock, wondering what it'd be like to only have to care for himself and be able to travel anywhere he wished. Dawnstripe asks Hareflight how Shrewpaw had done during his hunting assessment, before getting the two ready for their battle skills assessment. During his spar with Shrewpaw, he flinches as the tom sinks his claws into his pelt, the two spitting insults at each other. As Shrewpaw continues to goad him on, Tallpaw bites his foreleg hard enough to draw blood, losing himself in the moment as he envisions the apprentice as Sparrow, viciously clawing him in an attempt to avenge his father. Dawnstripe yowls at him to stop as the mentors break up the fight, looking on in horror as Shrewpaw lays on the ground, bloody and hurt.
