Chapter description[]
- A quarter moon had passed since Palebird had kitted. Talltail peeks into the nursery, checking in on his kin, before Palebird shoos him away. Stung, he leaves for the dawn patrol with Cloudrunner, Appledawn, and Hareflight, heading across WindClan territory towards Fourtrees to hunt. The patrol splits into two groups, with Talltail and Appledawn hunting closer towards the RiverClan border.
- The two cats decide to re-mark the border, but a RiverClan warrior disturbs them, crossing the border while hunting a rabbit. Appledawn and Talltail chase the two warriors, and Talltail reaches them first. He hisses at the two warriors, Brightsky and Piketooth, telling them to take the rabbit and leave. Appledawn hisses at him for giving away their prey, starting an argument between the WindClan cats.
- Once the patrol has returned to camp, Heatherstar talks to Talltail, asking him what's wrong. She tells him that he can always talk to her or Dawnstripe, his former mentor, before allowing the tom to exit. Barkface stops him outside the den, telling Talltail of a sign he had been given on the moor that morning. After their conversation, Talltail gazes towards the moor, itching with excitement, as StarClan has agreed that his destiny was to avenge his father's' death.
