Chapter description

Talltail wakes in a panic as he begins vomiting. He tries to drink some water, but continues to vomit instead. Crouching in pain he calls out to StarClan, but instead hears a voice telling him that he had eaten a poisoned rat. He recognizes the voice as Jake, and asks him for help. The ginger kittypet tells him to wait where he was. Without much of an option, Talltail remains where he is as he apologizes to his father for failing him. As he does, a Twoleg appears and picks him, the sound of a monster rumbling around him. He panics, but with no energy, Talltail succumbs as the pain in his belly continues to worsen.

He wakes up in an unfamiliar place as Jake reassures him that everything is fine. The kittypet tells the warrior that they are in his den and that a Twoleg had cured him of the poisoning. A Twoleg appears, making Talltail act in fear as it places a shallow stone of water with him. Talltail reluctantly drinks from and tells his companion that it tastes strange. Jake tells him it is tap water as Talltail questions how long he would have to stay with the Twolegs. The kittypet assumes until he's better, and heads outside. Talltail curls up as he realizes that the rogues would be harder to find the longer he remained trapped. Jake's Twoleg reappears and offers the tom some food, much to his displeasure. Jake tells him he can eat it as Talltail gingerly tries the pebbled food. He finds it alright, and is glad it doesn't upset his belly any further. He attempts to leave the basket, only with Jake's helpful words. The warrior first tries to escape, but finds his exit locked as the Twoleg had closed it before unlocking the vet basket. Jake's Twoleg attempts to pat the WindClan tom, but Talltail hisses at him, much to Jake's displeasure. Jake tells him that it had saved his life and the pair watch the Twoleg leave. Talltail expresses his want to make dirt and reluctantly uses the red nest that he is pointed towards. Afterwards, he asks Jake what is next, and the flame-colored kittypet meows that he needs to rest.

The Twoleg later brings in Jake's nest as night falls. Jake offers to share, but Talltail meows he isn't tired, as he is reluctant to sleep there. Jake meows that he is, but Talltail protests, saying his Twoleg is cruel. Jake objects to this, and Talltail realizes Jake likes being a kittypet. Talltail asks why he thinks about Clans, and Jake replies he is interested about life there. The black-and-white tom starts explaining about the Clans, and Jake asks why he is here. Talltail meows he has a task to complete, and Jake asks if it is a warrior mission. He says he is stunned that he is sleeping next to a warrior and Talltail meows he cannot believe he is sleeping next to a kittypet, and he hears Sandgorse telling him he is a warrior, and always will be.
