Chapter description[]
- An old she-cat asks why bother with trespassers, and Jake meows they are on a quest and Talltail thinks they need to fight, and Jake offers to tear Jay's prey apart. The black-and-white tom meows he is looking for a group of rogues, one of which is named Sparrow. Talltail meows Sparrow is brown and is with Algernon, Bess, Reena, and Mole, and Jay meows that Red had seen them before.
- The Clan cat grows excited, asking about when they passed, and concludes it was in the last moon. Jay meows the rogues have left already, and the kittypet thanks Jay for the information. Jake meows he can smell food, leaping through a flap and calls to Talltail to share. The Clan cat meows that he would prefer hunting, smelling shrew. Talltail sees the shrew then pounces on it. He eats it, and Jake asks Talltail to teach him how to hunt, suggesting they sleep in the shed for the night. Talltail leads the way into the dirt, digging out a hole. Jake is at first doubtful, but Talltail reassures him. He promises they will sleep in a better place tomorrow, and he thinks about his revenge he will have soon on Sparrow.
