Chapter description

Talltail and Jake wake up as the sun rises, and the kittypet suggests they climb the hill to see where the rouges went. Talltail, shocked, asks Jake if he was going home, but the ginger tom decides to at least see what's on the other side. Talltail, expecting to feel irritated, instead feels relieved, and the two cats begin to walk.

As they reach the top of the hill, Talltail looks around the area, spotting a hollow between two hills. Jake tells him that that's where they would most likely be, before Talltail smells a fox. Jake panics, frantically looking for somewhere to hide, but Talltail explains that the wind is blowing the wrong way for the fox to notice them. Talltail offers to teach Jake some battle moves as they continue onwards, explaining that WindClan tends to fight RiverClan and ShadowClan the most.

Jake pointedly asks if that's why Talltail is away from his Clan, and Talltail hisses at him, saying that he has to avenge his father. They stop to hunt, and Talltail teaches Jake how to kill a mouse. They travel until they reach the trees, making camp for the night. Talltail dozes off, but dreams of his father's death, and Jake wakes him up, excited to show him that he's found the scents of the rogues.
