This page contains Tallstar's personality and relationships. It contains conjecture due to being based off of general novel themes, and all statements must be sourced.

Personality[]

Tallstar is described as a loyal,[1] friendly,[2] and brave tom.

Relationships[]

Sandgorse[]

"The first rule of tunneling is that you're always stronger than you think."
―Sandgorse to Tallkit Tallstar's Revenge, page 23
Sandgorse was Tallstar's father. He was always enthusiastic to teach him how to tunnel.[3]. During Tallkit's kithood, he pushed him to become a tunneler although his son wanted to be a moor-runner,[4] and when Heatherstar apprenticed Tallpaw to Dawnstripe as a moor-runner, Sandgorse was furious.[5][6] When Tallpaw asked him if he wanted his son to tell Heatherstar he'd rather be a tunneler, Sandgorse asked Tallpaw if that was what he wanted for himself. When Tallpaw admitted that it wasn't, Sandgorse told him not to bother, but still told him he should be a tunneler,[7] and from then on still spoke to him but was not proud of him.[8] When Tallpaw started temporarily training with tunnelers, Sandgorse's anger faded and he regained enthusiasm to teach Tallpaw.[9] After a tunnel nearly flooded and killed them, however, Tallpaw was horrified that Sandgorse still expected him to want to be a tunneler now, having found the experience fun, and made clear to him that he was a moor-runner, not a tunneler.[10] Later, after the gorge tunnel was shut down due to the flooding, Sandgorse blamed Tallpaw for telling Heatherstar he nearly drowned and refused to believe his son when he tried to tell him it was Woollytail who had reported the flooding, instead telling Tallpaw to stay away from him and the tunnels, practically disowning him.[11] After a talk with Sparrow, Tallpaw accepted this and stopped feeling bad about his father's disappointment.[12] They did not reconcile before Sandgorse's untimely death while showing Sparrow one of the tunnels.[13] Talltail proceeded to attempt to avenge him by killing Sparrow, but ended up sparing him, remembering Barkpaw's words.[14] Sandgorse later gave Tallstar one of his nine lives, and told him he always knew Tallstar would be a great warrior, and he couldn't be more proud of him.[15] After Sandgorse's death, however, Woollytail told Tallpaw that Sandgorse was proud of his decision to fight for what he wanted, even if it wasn't what Sandgorse hoped for as he wouldn't have wanted him to become a tunneler just to make Sandgorse happy. He also claimed Sandgorse would have been proud to see his son as a moor runner.[16]

Palebird[]

«Tallpaw understood why [Palebird] always seemed so distant. If she didn't let herself feel anything, she might protect herself from her grief for Finchkit.»
—Tallpaw thinking about Palebird Tallstar's Revenge, page 201
Palebird was Tallstar's mother,[17] and also the mother of Wrenkit, Flykit, Rabbitkit, and Bristlekit. She often was very distant with her son due to the fact that she was always grieving for the death of Finchkit, Tallstar's only littermate.[18] Palebird spent almost all of her time in the nursery after Sandgorse's death, which sent her farther adrift from Tallpaw than before.[19] When Tallpaw decided to become a tunneler, Heatherstar instead discontinued tunneling altogether, and Palebird told Tallpaw she was glad he couldn't be a tunneler, as she didn't want to lose another cat she loved. This surprised Tallpaw, as he couldn't remember another time Palebird had told him she loved him.[20] She later became pregnant with Woollytail's kits, which slightly angered Talltail, frustrated that his mother had let go of Sandgorse so easily.[21] After he returned from his journey, he began to grow close to Palebird and Woollytail's kits, and Palebird as well.[22]

Dawnstripe[]

"With this life I give you patience. Training the young takes kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. They are small gifts, but they will be rewarded many times."
―Dawnstripe giving Tallstar a life Tallstar's Revenge, page 499
Tallstar was apprenticed to Dawnstripe, a moor runner, as Tallpaw.[23] She trained him well, and helped shield him from Shrewpaw's bullying during his apprenticeship.[24] When Tallpaw later told Dawnstripe he wanted to become a tunneler, she was shocked but respected his decision, although Heatherstar turned it down after tunneling was banned,[25] and after Talltail became a warrior, Dawnstripe was proud of him.[26] She was also delighted when he returned to WindClan after his journey with Jake, and welcomed him home,[27] and later gave him one of his nine lives.[28]

Shrewclaw[]

"Hey Wormkit! [...] Why don’t you tunnel underneath? You’re not supposed to be a moor runner like us!"
―Shrewkit teasing Tallkit Tallstar's Revenge, page 12
Shrewclaw often bullied Tallstar when they were kits for his tunneler heritage.[29] Then known as Shrewkit, he scorned tunnelers, claiming they weren’t as skilled as moor runners.[30] When Tallpaw was an apprentice, he always regarded Shrewpaw as an irritating furball who was always teasing him,[31] and sought out to prove to Shrewpaw that he wasn’t going to fail being a moor runner after Heatherstar had apprenticed him to Dawnstripe. However, Barkpaw at one point claimed Shrewpaw was impressed by Tallpaw's hunting skills, though he wouldn't admit it.[32] After Brackenwing, Shrewpaw's mother, was killed during a ShadowClan attack, the latter blamed Tallpaw for her death when Tallpaw admitted he had scented ShadowClan but didn't think it was important.[33] After Tallpaw decided to become a tunneler but was denied, Shrewpaw mocked him, claiming nobody liked him and no one would miss him if he left, which caused Tallpaw to attack him.[34] After the two became warriors, Shrewpaw, now known as Shrewclaw, continued to bully Talltail, criticizing him at every opportunity and exclusively calling him "Wormcat". When Talltail decided to leave WindClan, however, Shrewclaw was surprised, and admitted he thought they would always hunt alongside each other.[35] When Talltail reminded him of the constant bullying, Shrewclaw genuinely apologized for the first and only time, claiming he was only ever teasing.[35] When Talltail returned, Shrewclaw, who was now mates with Ryestalk, mocked him, but had curiosity and affection underneath his tone.[36] Shrewclaw accepted Talltail's return, but still criticized him, though was at least willing to call him by his real name.[37] During another ShadowClan raid, Talltail attempted to help Shrewclaw avenge his mother, but Shrewclaw was killed, to Talltail's horror, his last words being to avenge Brackenwing for him, calling him "Wormcat" again.[38] He later gave Tallstar one of his nine lives, though he also admitted that they were never friends.[15]

Jake[]

"I can't live as a warrior. But I'll always remember [you]. You've shown me a life that I've always dreamed about. But now I know where I truly belong."
―Jake to Talltail Tallstar's Revenge, page 500
Jake was the best friend of Talltail, later Tallstar, whom he traveled with for a while. Jake eventually temporarily left his Twolegs to go find Sparrow with him,[39] and the two stayed with the rogue group for a while, whereas Jake told Talltail to not kill Sparrow to avenge Sandgorse.[40] After Sparrow's attempted murder, Jake and Talltail departed from the rogue group and traveled back to the forest territories, where he parted with Talltail sadly to go return to his Twolegs.[41] Tallstar even states that Firestar was Jake's copy, and that the flame-colored ThunderClan leader reminds him of Jake every day.[42][43]

Firestar[]

"Spoken like a true warrior. Having traveled with you, I wasn't surprised when Bluestar made you her deputy. There are those who thought such a young cat would never carry off such a great responsibility. I was not among them."
―Tallstar to Fireheart Rising Storm, page 311
Tallstar is very supportive and respectful of Firestar, and he recognizes that Firestar's father is Jake due to their similarity.[source?] They first meet when Firestar and Graystripe journey to return WindClan.[source?] Tallstar is supportive of Firestar's new leadership.[source?] The two refuse to join TigerClan and form an alliance, LionClan. Together with the other Clans, Tallstar and the others drive BloodClan out of the forest.[source?]

Barkface[]

"Ignore him and try again, Tallkit!"
―Barkkit encouraging Tallkit Tallstar's Revenge, page 12
Barkface and Talltail were close as kits, as Barkkit would always scold his littermate, Shrewkit, for teasing Tallkit.[29] Later when he decided to become Hawkheart's apprentice, Tallpaw was disappointed that he'd have to be stuck with Shrewpaw instead.[44] Barkpaw and Tallpaw still occasionally talked about Shrewpaw's habit of bullying Tallpaw, and he would often tell Tallpaw to ignore Shrewpaw's antics.[24] When Talltail was planning to set off to kill Sparrow in revenge for Sandgorse, Barkface told him that revenge wouldn’t bring Sandgorse back.[45] After Talltail returned from the journey, Barkface, now a full medicine cat, was glad he didn’t kill Sparrow, and when Tallstar later became leader he served under his leadership until Tallstar ascended to StarClan.[27]

Deadfoot[]

Deadfoot, born Hopkit, befriended Tallpaw[46]; Talltail reciprocated this friendship, even after becoming a warrior, and acted to reassure an anxious Hopkit during Palebird's second kitting.[47] Upon returning to Clan territory from his journey, Talltail recalled Hopkit among his Clanmates and found himself terribly homesick.[48] Despite their separation, Hopkit remained fond of the older tom, and pleaded with Talltail to help him train when he feared that his lame paw might prevent him from becoming an apprentice. Talltail agreed willingly, and was impressed by Hopkit's determination and ability to learn. He became gravely concerned when Hopkit was injured by a stone[49], and encouraged him during the time he spent in recovery.[50]
When Hopkit's condition grew serious, Talltail was so determined to help him that he proposed taking him to Jake's Twoleg. When this was rejected, he expressed willingness to travel to RiverClan territory for an herb that might be able to treat the infection.[51] Talltail later went to Heatherstar and directly asked to be made Hopkit's mentor; with some persuasion, she approved of the arrangement, and the renamed Deadpaw had his hopes rewarded when he learned that Talltail would be his mentor.[52] By the time WindClan was driven from the forest, Deadfoot had been appointed Tallstar's deputy.[53]

Heatherstar[]

Coming Soon

Woollytail[]

Woollytail was the best friend of Tallstar's father Sandgorse.[54] He was eager to get a new tunnelling apprentice when WindClan was lacking in them, and when Tallpaw was chosen to be a moor runner instead, he, like Sandgorse and Palebird, was furious.[55] He later unknowingly caused Tallpaw's relationship with Sandgorse to fracture further when he told Dawnstripe about the flooded gorge tunnel, which resulted in Heatherstar shutting the project down, for which Sandgorse blamed Tallpaw and refused to listen when he told his father it was Woollytail, not him, who revealed this.[56] However, Tallpaw seemingly did not hold this against Woollytail. Later, when Tallpaw wanted to become a tunnelling apprentice, Woollytail was pleased, but also concerned that Tallpaw was only doing it for Sandgorse's sake, not his own, which he urged the apprentice not to do.[57] Tallpaw later became upset when Palebird became pregnant with Woollytail's kits, believing that he and Sandgorse couldn't make Palebird happy, but Woollytail could.[54] When Talltail left WindClan temporarily, Woollytail tried to tell him not to, but he had made up his mind, and asked Woollytail to look after his mother and siblings, knowing he would, showing he still trusted the older warrior despite his misgivings.[58] Woollytail later gave Tallstar one of his nine lives, and Tallstar was pleased to see him, implying he had gotten over any hard feelings toward him.[59]

Wrenflight, Flytail, Bristlebark, and Rabbitear[]

When Tallpaw found out his mother was expecting four younger half-siblings, he was at first annoyed that Palebird had moved on from Sandgorse so quickly, still processing his father's death himself.[54] Afterward, when they were born, he tried to bond with them, first by helping them reach their mother's milk,[60] telling them about the Gatherings and visiting them in the nursery, but was often reprimanded by Palebird for this.[61] After they were old enough to play, he sometimes gave them badger rides, but also found them a bit annoying, though he was proud of them.[62] When Talltail decided to leave WindClan, they were upset, and Wrenkit begged him to stay, asking who would give them badger rides with him gone.[63] While with the rogues, he missed them, but claimed that they were happier without him there.[64] After he returned to WindClan, he saved Wrenkit and Flykit from a hawk and brought them back to camp[65], and all four of them were overjoyed to see him again.[66]

Onestar[]

Onestar was the son of Tallstar's half-sister Wrenflight.[67] Tallstar respected Onewhisker as a warrior, and Onewhisker, in turn, respected Tallstar's leadership. He even reprimanded Mudclaw, the deputy, for not showing respect to Tallstar, claiming he had been leader for a long time[68][69]. On his deathbed, Tallstar had a vision of Onewhisker leading the clan peacefully, and Mudclaw leading them into battle, and thus changed his deputy from Mudclaw to Onewhisker right before he died, but was unable to explain why.[70] Onewhisker was shocked by this, but agreed to become WindClan's leader per Tallstar's wishes. Tallstar later gave him one of his nine lives. Later, Onestar and Tallstar got into a fight in StarClan over Tallstar choosing him so suddenly as his successor. Onestar won this fight, which showed Tallstar he was the right leader for WindClan[71].
