| "I'm not staying. I can't stand all of this anymore. I should have remained a rogue, alone on the moors. If I'd had my kits alone, maybe Morning Whisker would still be alive now. Maybe none of this would have happened. I've helped… I've helped you hunt and in battle, and all I've had in return is grief and heartbreak." |

Chapter description[]
- Three days after Gray Wing's departure, the group waits worriedly for his return, having searched for him over the days. Thunder visits Wind Runner and the ill Morning Whisker, where the kit's family is watching over her. Thunder tries to reassure Wind Runner, but she snaps at him, and he leaves to settle with Tall Shadow. He offers to search for Gray Wing, but she reminds him of the sickness, and he instead drowses through the night. When Thunder wakes, Clear Sky arrives and tells Thunder that he still has not seen Gray Wing. He addresses the sickness and suggests that the area burned by the fire could be a new camp, but Tall Shadow instead wants a meeting at the four trees.
- As he returns to camp with a rabbit, Thunder hears Wind Runner shriek and rushes to her den to find that Morning Whisker is dying. Pebble Heart keeps Wind Runner away to protect her from the sickness, and she collapses in grief. She tells Tall Shadow that she wants Morning Whisker to be among the spirit-cats, and the cats prepare the kit's body with leaves before slowly taking her to the four trees. They dig a hole beneath a gorse bush and bury Morning Whisker, and Thunder asks the spirit-cats to relieve her pain. Tall Shadow says that they should stay, but Wind Runner announces that she wants to leave, believing that her kit may have survived if she were still a rogue. Holly tries to convince her to stay, but Wind Runner runs away with her kits, and Gorse Fur promises to take care of them.
