"Fox red and raven black will save us from the storm of stone and water." |
— The stranger to Yellowfang in The Hidden Prophecy |
The Hidden Prophecy is a short-story of Cinderpaw during Forest of Secrets. It was the second short-story competition hosted on the Warrior Cats website, and fans were invited to interpret the meaning of the prophecy.[1]
Summary[]
- At the Moonstone, Yellowfang and Cinderpaw share dreams with StarClan. However, Cinderpaw unexpectedly wakes up in Yellowfang's dream in the middle of a forest during a severe storm. A strange shadowy cat appears before Yellowfang with a message: fox red and raven black will save us from the storm of stone and water. Yellowfang questions if it is a prophecy, though the stranger is dismissive. In the waking world, Cinderpaw questions her mentor about the mysterious cat's words, though Yellowfang insists it was merely a dream and does not intend to tell Bluestar about it. Cinderpaw wonders if this prophecy will stay hidden forever.
- In one ending, towards the end of her life, Cinderpelt resolves to protect Sorreltail as she gives birth to her kits while badgers attack ThunderClan's camp. Realizing her friend's orange-and-black pelt, Cinderpelt is suddenly reminded of the prophecy given by Raggedstar. She wonders if Sorreltail's kits will play a role in the meaning of the prophecy, but a badger enters the nursery and attacks. Cinderpelt dies knowing the prophecy will stay hidden forever just as Yellowfang predicted.
- In another ending, Cinderpaw sneaks back to the Moonstone and reunites with the mysterious stranger, Fallen Leaves. The ancient tom shows her glimpses of the future: the Great Journey, the Clans arriving at the lake, the Moonpool, and Bristlefrost's sacrifice. Several voices warn her of various prophecies: blood will spill blood, there will be three, darkness, air, water, and sky, embrace what you find in the shadows, and three must become four. A louder voice reminds her of the fox red and raven black prophecy. When Cinderpaw asks when all this will happen, Fallen Leaves mysteriously explains she will know when it is time.
Contest[]
- Similar with the previous contest, the first 500 words were written by Victoria Holmes, and fans were invited to finish the story in 500 words or less by December 31th, 2022. Participants were divided into the under 13 and 13 years plus groups. Fans were encouraged to not limit their entry to a certain time period, and they could either explore characters from the past or the future, or make up characters of their own. Winners were given a printed dedication in the 2023 edition of the The Ultimate Guide: Updated and Expanded Edition, a signed copy of Into the Wild, and a $100 voucher for the Official Warrior Cats Store.[2]
- The winners for the contest were announced on February 21st: Neve Sugars-Keen for the 13 years and older category and Sarah Livingston in the under 13 years category. Vicky also recorded a video of her reading the two winning entries.[3]
